Some definitions of literary devices, techniques and style from searching via http://www.ferretsoft.com/

LITERARY DEVICES http://mrbraiman.home.att.net/lit.htm

Literary devices refers to any specific aspect of literature, or a particular work, which we can recognize, identify, interpret and/or analyze. Both literary elements and literary techniques can rightly be called literary devices. Literary elements refers to aspects or characteristics of a whole text. They are not “used,” per se, by authors; we derive what they are from reading the text. Most literary elements can be derived from any and all texts; for example, every story has a theme, every story has a setting, every story has a conflict, every story is written from a particular point-of-view, etc. In order to be discussed legitimately, literary elements must be specifically identified for that text. Literary techniques refers to any specific, deliberate constructions of language which an author uses to convey meaning. An author’s use of a literary technique usually occurs with a single word or phrase, or a particular group of words or phrases, at one single point in a text. Unlike literary elements, literary techniques are not necessarily present in every text. Literary terms refers to the words themselves with which we identify and describe literary elements and techniques. They are not found in literature and they are not “used” by authors.

Allegory: Where every aspect of a story is representative, usually symbolic, of something else, usually a larger abstract concept or important historical/geopolitical event. Lord of the Flies provides a compelling allegory of human nature, illustrating the three sides of the psyche through its sharply-defined main characters. Antagonist: Counterpart to the main character

Mathematical Dependent vs Independent Variables

...terms of x, then y is known as a dependent variable (and x is an independent variable). Statistics In a statistics experiment, the dependent variable is the event studied and expected to change whenever the independent variable is altered.[1] Modelling In mathematical modelling, the dependent variable is studied to see if and how much it varies as the independent variables vary. In the simple stochastic linear model the term is the i th value of the dependent variable and is i th value of the independent variable. The term is known as the "error" and contains the variability of the dependent variable not explained by the independent variable. With multiple independent variables, the expression is: , where n is the number of independent variables. Simulation In simulation, the dependent variable is changed in response to changes in the independent variables. Statistics Synonyms Independent variable An independent variable is also known as a "predictor variable", "regressor", "controlled variable", "manipulated variable", "explanatory variable", "exposure variable" (see reliability theory), "risk factor" (see medical statistics), "feature" (in machine learning and pattern recognition) or an "input variable."[2][3] "Explanatory variable" is preferred by some authors over "independent variable" when the quantities treated as "independent variables" may not be statistically independent.[4][5] Independent variable(s) may be of these kinds: continuous variable(s), binary/dichotomous...

Independent Film Producers

...Independent Film Producers Name Institution Independent Film Producers An independent film refers to film production that results in a feature film which is majorly or completely produced outside the main film studio system (O’Meara, 2014). Besides being produced and disseminated by independent theatre companies, independent films are also distributed and produced by firms of major film studios. These independent films are commonly distinguishable by their style and content as well as the way the personal artistic vision of the filmmaker is realized (O’Meara, 2014). Generally, independent films are produced with considerably lesser film budgets compared to major studio films. Also, the marketing of these films is usually marked by limited release, though they can also have major promoting campaigns as well as wide release. They are usually screened at international, national, or local film festivals before being distributed (O’Meara, 2014). This paper presents a biographical essay of three independent film producers; Woody Allen, Wes Anderson, and Noah Baumbach Woody Allen Woody Allen is an American writer, playwright, comedian, actor, and director. Karen Is an Independent Contractor or an Employee

...Scenario Summary: Week 1 Your Role/Assignment: Your role is to decide if Karen is an independent contractor or an employee and discuss some of the preventative and ethical situations that are occurring in this case.  Questions: 1. Do you feel that Karen is an independent contractor or an employee? What is your rationale for this decision? I believe that Karen is an independent contractor. She was never hired by ABC Utility as a permanent employee. Karen’s tittle was change twice; she had a tittle of a temporary employee and Human Resources Consultant. My rationale for my decision is based on the fact that Karen has been working for ABC Utility for the past five year as an independent contractor and has never received any benefits and was paid as a 1099. Karen was never in need for any kind of benefits prior to her husband's death. After Karen’s husband death, she finds herself in need to have benefits. 2. What factors do you feel help contribute to Karen being an employee?  The factors that help are that she has been working fulltime for five years with the company and has developed a great rapport with fellow employees and other employees with hire positions such as managers. The Human Resource manager removed the word temporary out of her job title given her a permanent job title “Human Resources Consultant”. Having a solid working relationship with the human resource manager may also be leading others to view Karen as a permanent employee...

The Independent Record Labels of the 1950’s and 1960’s

...The Independent Record Labels of the 1950’s and 1960’s History of Music Production Eric Eller Throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s, a wave of new musical movements by independent record labels and new artists emerged in the United States. This movement is captured in the stories of those label creators and owners, and in the turbulent journey through their successes and failures. The first emergence was fueled by multiple factors: competitive economic circumstances, up-and-coming local musical talent in conjunction with the independent labels and studio owners, and the commercially viable musical interest and curiosity of consumers in these local artists. An article poses another causative factor that makes sense: when rock and roll was a new genre, major labels such as Columbia, Capitol, and RCA were “reluctant to sign these acts; thus, sprung forth the independent label” (Jacobs). Grassroots production and engineering enthusiasts were given an in-road into the music industry and were able to gain their own clients in independent local artists. Independent label owners in connection with this local talent generate publicity and profit. One such example is found with the duo of Polish immigrant brothers named Leonard and Phil Chess, also known as the Blues Brothers. The Chess brothers bought sole ownership of Aristocrat Records in 1950, and change its name to Chess Records. Leonard specialized as the hands-on producer for the label, while Phil focused...

Independent

...Nobody But Myself An independent person is someone who supports him or herself and is forced to accomplish his or her own responsibilities unaided. A person who is dependent is better known for constantly relying on others for help. Always depending on others causes an individual to lack self-reliance and self-sufficiency. I can shamefully admit that, as a child, I was extremely dependent on everyone around me for everything I did. I was most dependent on my family, including my mom, dad, sister, and cousins. From age ten to twelve I became extremely needy that I started to develop severe laziness. I was so lazy that one day I had asked my cousin to make me a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, to which she replied no and demanded I make it myself. The only response my sluggish mind could utter was, “But I do not know how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich,” which was an absolute lie. It was as if I began to view my family as my servants. Rarely would I do anything for myself. All I had to say was “I want this” and it would become mine. I was given money, clothes, toys, and food whenever I wanted. I developed into an incompetent child. When I turned thirteen years old, my parents started to act stricter and enforced more rules. This was a turning point in my life because I finally understood that I could not be successful in life by relying on anyone else but myself. From that moment on, I focused all my energy on transforming myself into an independent individual. Personally...

The Development of an E-Commerce Page Within an Independent Record Label's Website. - Outline

...Managerial Appl of Info Tech SUBJECT OF COURSE PROJECT: The Development of an e-commerce page within an independent record label’s website. BUSINESS PROBLEM STATEMENT: In today’s age of digital downloads, mobile computing and Wi-Fi hotspots the music industry’s business model has completely changed. No longer is it viable to have only a wholesaler distribute a label’s music to records stores and department stores with music sections. Also, consumers are more interested in purchasing single songs (singles) rather than entire albums but retailers only like to carry albums since they return a larger profit than singles. Retailers carry singles of specific artists only. Because of the service fee charged by the distributor the aforementioned scenario continues to eat into the revenue of the company. NAME OF COMPANY OR ORGANIZATION: ACME Record Label, LLC GENERAL BENEFITS IT WILL PROVIDE THE ORGANIZATION: Indie artists and bands as well have had the fair share of opportunity to be published, heard, and bought online. Developing a company’s own e-commerce platform enables music sharing to be more accessible and affordable to company and consumers since songs can be purchased individually as opposed to the old school buying of the whole album in order to hear that one song. This individual song retail packaging has proved to be more profitable to the artist and the record label than the more difficult selling of the whole album. Also, the fee administered by...

Trump Won’t Go Forward with Debate

...Won’t Go Forward With Debate By JEREMY W. PETERS Donald J. Trump has dropped plans to moderate a presidential debate, but don’t expect him to fade quietly from the political scene. In fact, Republicans may have gotten more than they bargained for by shunning him. Mr. Trump’s statement on Tuesday that he was bowing out of the Newsmax debate seemed certain to open the door to another round of “I just might …” threats from the real estate mogul. “It is very important to me that the right Republican candidate be chosen to defeat the failed and very destructive Obama administration,” Mr. Trump said in his statement. “But if that Republican, in my opinion, is not the right candidate, I am not willing to give up my right to run as an independent candidate.” Mr. Trump drew considerable criticism from the Republican establishment for moderating a presidential debate while openly saying that he might still run if he was displeased with the candidates. Rather than go ahead with the debate and declare that he will not run — Mr. Trump has flirted with running for president several times since the 1980s but has always decided not to follow through — he chose to drop the debate. “I must leave all of my options open because, above all else, we must make America great again!” he said. Mr. Trump was facing a potentially awkward task: moderating a debate that only two candidates said they would attend. Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum were the only two Republicans who agreed to participate...
