Individual Leadership

"A leader is anyone who uses interpersonal skills to influence others to accomplish a specific goal" (Sullivan & Decker, 2009, p. 45). An effective leader must possess qualities of honesty, integrity, equality, and can communicate and listen. Other qualities of a leader include the ability to motivate, lead, promote quality performance, and guide toward a common goal while maintaining individual and group satisfaction. Management and leadership roles overlap and frequently used interchangeably, however they are different in that a manager may not be a leader, and a leader may not be in a managerial position. My personal view of leadership is that leadership is ingrained or inherited in a person as well as a learned trait. Gilbert (1975) found that potential leaders were more likely to have inherited traits such as ambition, poise, self-confidence, orderly thinking, sensitivity, flexibility, and dominance. Although the behavioral theorist believes that a leader's personal traits provide only the foundation, leaders develop through "education, training, and life experiences" (Sullivan & Decker, 2009, p. 45). My personal view is that a leader has qualities of both trait and behavioral theories. Positive leadership is vital in every goal-oriented setting, and positive leadership results in positive results. Positive leaders possess good morals, interpersonal skills, assertiveness not aggressiveness, patience, discipline, confidence, and trust. The difference between leadership and management is that leadership does not have the formal power or authority ("Nurse Together," 2008-2012). The power of a leader comes from a "do as I do" attitude and the interpersonal skill among a group that inspires peers to achieve a higher level of performance and work toward a common goal. ...Individual Leadership Styles Nursing leaders and their style of leadership can be the determining factor in the success of a hospital. For a leader to be successful they must find ways to motivate their staff to work at their highest potential and work toward the goals and vision of the hospital. There are many different leadership styles that produce various responses from employees. I have chosen to compare the transactional and the transformational styles of leadership. The transactional leadership model is simply a reward for performance philosophy. If the work is done well the employee receives a reward and if the work is not done well the employee is punished or suffers consequences (Curtis & O’Connell, 2011). I can see parts of this philosophy used in my work setting. For example when the hospital is experiencing a staffing shortage they offer a bonus for those who sign up to work extra shifts. They believe that the monetary bonus will entice staff to sign up for extra shifts to fill the staffing needs. The thought is that people do what you want them to do if you reward them. If work is not completed as it should be workers can either be suspended or written up. The transformational leadership style puts the emphasis on motivation.
