“We strive to be like our brother men, all men must be alike”(Rand 19). In Ayn Rand’s Anthem, the society lacks individualism. However in Equality’s case he constantly feels that “we were born with a curse. it has always driven us to thoughts which are forbidden”(18). Equality only feels that he is cursed because of the standards in the society. The true reason for the “sin” Equality committed was due to the pressure of collectivism from the society he lived in. Although the actions he committed were seen as a sin in his society, Equality has a correct moral assessment of these sins because of his self-individuality and egoism in his own pursuit of happiness.

Early on in the novella, Equality discovered a tunnel with International 4-8818. They both keep this a secret between them and later, Equality utilizes this loophole within the collective society. In the collective society, the “law says that none among men may be alone… is the great transgression and the root of all evil”(17). Although this was the case, Equality had been constantly alone, studying, and discovering knowledge that not even the Scholars were aware of. Not only was he keeping a secret, he also was not in the presence of his brothers. Which in a collective society “There are no men but only the great WE”(19). Considering Equality’s transgressions this still did not stop him from reinventing an artifact that is vile to the leaders of the society. Equality believed that his new discovery would counteract his transgressions and furthermore have his dream life mandate a reality. However, the World Council of Scholars despised his individualistic actions and sought to destroy his reinvention. This further pushed Prometheus to recognize “the blessed thing which i called my curse”(98).
