The Degradation of Women Through Advertisements

...days ago, before being assigned this extra credit opportunity. The advertisement that I am going to be analyzing was found in a Cosmopolitan magazine only a few days ago. The advertisement is for Orbit chewing gum and at first the picture seems rather harmless. However, when you stop to think about what was said in the video shown in class, you may begin to see and think otherwise. As I flipped through the pages of the magazine I found myself stopped because of an enticing advertisement. This ad in particular has a very nice looking woman dressed like a Hawaiian hula dancer who is front and center on the page with only a small portion of beach and ocean behind her. All seems well so far, right? Well, everything would be fine or at least acceptable if things were not so bizarre. The thing that struck me as a little out of the ordinary was that she was not wearing a real bikini top or even a coconut brassiere. The thing that makes this ad so degrading towards women is the fact that this beautiful young lady is wearing two packs of Orbit gum tied to string to cover up her breasts. That is not all. On top of the insult that they would exploit a woman’s breasts to sell chewing gum, they make a poor attempt at witty-humor as well. This is because the flavor of the chewing gum that Orbit and the Wm Wrigley Jr. Company are advertising is “NEW! Orbit Maui Melon Mint”. This is particularly...

Also, a use for gum is to chew it when you have an upset stomach when Tums are not available. Another use is to use gum as an adhesive when nothing else is around. Gum’s melting point is about 125 degrees fahrenheit (mentalfloss.com). By knowing this we hypothesized that the gum would melt to a liquid. In our experiment we used spearmint sugar free gum of four different brands: Extra, Icebreaker, Trident, and Orbit. In order to answer this research question, we must first know the...

Should Kids Be Allowed To Chew Gum In School

...“POP!” Her gum popped in her mouth. The mint flavor was her favorite and now she could chew gum in class. No teachers pestering her over gum anymore. At least thats what would happen if she could chew gum in class. But she couldn’t, and that’s where I come in as principal. Allowing her to chew it when ever she wanted; all the kids chew it anyway so instead of having the teacher waste time yelling at every kid in the classroom, and wasting time everyone could chew it! By having teachers yell at kids for doing this, it takes away class time that is beneficial for kids to know. Envisage if kids had their own dorms in the school. Good idea, right? By having dorms in the school that could let kids go back to their dorm if they forgot a book,...

Wrigley gave their Chinese consumers a reason to chew by recognising cultural facets (traditional Chinese flavours and medicines) and trends in health benefits (obesity and oral health), and then innovatively developed product lines in ways which would appeal to a wide variety of segments. Going forward from 2008, the decision to join forces with Mars, further reiterated the importance Wrigley’s placed on product innovation and the potential that Mars global president Paul Michaels must have recognised...

First I will describe the constituent elements and the overall structure of the selected passage, not the entire essay. Then I will transition into a section about the relations that the constituent elements have to the other elements in the passage. Lastly I will discuss the different possibilities of meaning shaped by the structure. I will show the different structures, examine how they relate to each other and what that could possibly mean. I examined the passage in Chapter 21 where Laney is entering the chewing gum bar named “Le Chicle”. The main textual ideas include the combination of cultures, the importance of geometric shapes, and the lack of human attribute descriptions. It start on page 191 with the line “Steep, narrow stairs, walled with an alarming pink mosaic of glistening tonsil-like nodules.” The passage I examined ends with the quote on page 192, “Laney clicked through a series of images: abstract geometrics arranged in vanishing linear perspective.” Immediately prior to this section Laney and McCrae passed by a man in a hazmat suit while standing on stilts. They recognize that he is a member of the group known as “New Logic” the group believes that the world will end when the human race hits a specific weight overall of the planet. After...
