Leadership in Action Alnap Study

...Leadership in Action: Leading Effectively in Humanitarian Operations A CK N O W L E D G E M E N TS First and foremost, we would like to thank the individuals who allowed their leadership to be placed in the spotlight as one of our case-study examples of effective operational humanitarian leadership. Their generosity and openness in doing so and in answering our many questions are greatly appreciated. We also thank the many other interviewees who spoke to us frankly and shared their insights on what they valued in terms of operational humanitarian leadership. David Peppiatt played an important role in identifying and facilitating a number of the case studies. Isobel McConnan carried out interviews and provided helpful comments on earlier drafts. Georgia Armitage helped with the literature review. The Advisory Group provided invaluable input, words of advice and comments on the draft report, they are: Tim Cross, Wendy Fenton, Randolph Kent, Ky Luu, and Claire Messina. Paul Knox Clarke’s inputs undoubtedly raised the quality of the analysis. Deborah Eade provided excellent editorial services and comments. Sara Swords also commented on an earlier draft. Ben Ramalingam played a key role in getting the study off the ground and in its design. Finally, thanks to John Mitchell for his ongoing and valuable support to this work. The project was undertaken as part of the joint initiative on leadership in the humanitarian sector in partnership with People In Aid, Humanitarian...

Libya in U.S. Demonology Part 4. The U.S. Role in the Middle East Part 5. International Terrorism: Image and Reality Part 6. The World after September 11 Part 7. U.S./Israel-Palestine Notes Preface to the First Edition (1986) St. Augustine tells the story of a pirate captured by Alexander the Great, who asked him "how he dares molest the sea." "How dare you molest the whole world?" the pirate replied: "Because I do it with a little ship only, I am called a thief; you, doing it with a great navy, are called an Emperor." The pirate's answer was "elegant and excellent," St. Augustine relates. It captures with some accuracy the current relations between the United States and various minor actors on the stage of international terrorism: Libya, factions of the PLO, and others. More generally, St. Augustine's tale illuminates the meaning of the concept of international terrorism in contemporary Western usage, and reaches to the heart of the frenzy over selected incidents of terrorism currently being orchestrated, with supreme cynicism, as a cover for Western violence. The term "terrorism" came into use at the end of the eighteenth century, primarily to refer to violent acts of governments designed to ensure popular submission. That concept plainly is of little benefit to the practitioners of state terrorism...

The Study of Language

...This page intentionally left blank The Study of Language This best-selling textbook provides an engaging and user-friendly introduction to the study of language. Assuming no prior knowledge of the subject, Yule presents information in short, bite-sized sections, introducing the major concepts in language study – from how children learn language to why men and women speak differently, through all the key elements of language. This fourth edition has been revised and updated with twenty new sections, covering new accounts of language origins, the key properties of language, text messaging, kinship terms and more than twenty new word etymologies. To increase student engagement with the text, Yule has also included more than fifty new tasks, including thirty involving data analysis, enabling students to apply what they have learned. The online study guide offers students further resources when working on the tasks, while encouraging lively and proactive learning. This is the most fundamental and easy-to-use introduction to the study of language. George Yule has taught Linguistics at the Universities of Edinburgh, Hawai’i, Louisiana State and Minnesota. He is the author of a number of books, including Discourse Analysis (with Gillian Brown, 1983) and Pragmatics (1996). “A genuinely introductory linguistics text, well suited for undergraduates who have little prior experience thinking descriptively about language. Yule’s crisp and thought-provoking presentation of key issues works...
