How Bipolar Disorder effected my Life Does someone you know go from extremely happy one day to acting as if they are depressed in the next month or maybe even the same week? They may be suffering from bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression. Bipolar disorder affects about two million people in the United States in any given year, both men and women. It is primarily a biological disorder that occurs in a specific area of the brain and is due to the dysfunction of certain neurotransmitters. As a biological disorder it may lie dormant and be activated on its own or it may be triggered by extended factor such as stress. The estimated average age for this disorder is early twenty’s, although there have been reports beginning as early as elementary school. I became interested in Bipolar disorder when I was thirteen and my dad had been diagnosed. He had shown signs late in his teens but wasn’t diagnosed until his mid-thirties when his symptoms became too much for him to handle. I then did further research to learn about what he might be experiencing. Today I would like to explore the phases of Bipolar disorder, its symptoms and lastly its treatments.

Now that we have learned a little about what bipolar disorder is and who it affects let’s begin with discussing the two phases…

The two phases of this disorder are manic and depressive. These periods of mania and depression vary from person to person. Many experience only brief periods of these intense mood changes and some may not even be aware they have Bipolar disorder. Younger patients may first suffer cyclothymia which is a less extreme form of Bipolar disorder. The children who experience this will display less intense symptoms but nearly half will progress into full manic episodes. Today I want to focus more on the adults. Men typically experience a manic episode first while women first experience a

...Every writer experiences that moment: she walks into a bookstore, looks at the nearest display of whatever book is the “hot seller” that week, and wonders, “How can someone write something that bad and get published, but I can’t?” The publishing industry is known for being hyper-competitive and almost as fickle as the field of fashion design. With thousands of talented, unknown writers vying to get discovered, sometimes it seems like the answer to the question of “who gets a publishing deal this week” is as random, and as risky, as a game of Russian roulette. Writers seeking to take control of their careers and their lives need to re- evaluate the typical publishing cycle and consider whether or not self-publishing is a viable option. Self-publishing is an accessible means of pursuing the business of authorship, allows a writer to exercise more control over her intellectual property, and gives a writer the flexibility to promote her writing in a way that she finds acceptable and effective. The opportunities to self-publish a novel, novella, short story, article, or any other preferred format of writing have never been more prevalent. Self-publishing platforms such as Amazon, Lulu, and Smashwords offer abundant options in a variety of mediums, from physical trade paperbacks to the ever-growing eBook sector. Writers can select from a wide variety of packages, including editing and proofreading services, cover design options, and formatting services. Multi-talented writers can...

...Barbara Roman Professor Cotto LA-070 19 November 2012 The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great War, more commonly known as World War I, influences F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel in many important ways. The War directly causes Gatsby to lose his lover Daisy and is responsible for his Montenegro medal and significant “Oxford education”. World War I forced many young American men to leave their family to fight a war in unfamiliar European territory. Unexpectedly drafted into a conflict that they had little concern for, the War inexplicably altered the lives of millions of Americans. Faced with terrible conditions and unbridled inhumanity many soldiers returned home insane or permanently shocked from their war experiences. To add insult to injury, the government failed in its duty to assist veterans economically after they returned from the War. For Gatsby, World War I meant that he would have to leave his sweetheart Daisy behind while he fought overseas. Though they regularly sent letters to each other at first, Daisy eventually grows tired of waiting for Gatsby and marries Tom Buchanan; Gatsby literally loses Daisy to the War. When Gatsby returns he is extremely poor, barely surviving from day to day. He is forced to wear his military uniform for months after his return because he is unable to purchase civilian clothing. When offered lunch by Meyer Wolfshiem, Gatsby “ate more than four dollars' worth of food in half an hour” (179). Without money Gatsby could...

...Abstract This paper is a detailed explanation of a Planetree project that I developed and carried out in the course of my work at the Department of Veterans Affairs. I explain how I was able to complete the project without the benefit of funds from the department. There are four references that I consulted to develop ideas for the project. I have clear memories of visiting the doctor’s office as a child. The frosted glass partition between the receptionist and the waiting area created a boundary that clearly stated “keep out.” When I asked my mother why it was there, she said because the people working in the office wanted peace and quiet. I don’t think I fully understood that explanation at the time, but I did understand that it meant they didn’t want to be bothered. The breaking down of these boundaries is the heart of the Planetree Patient-Centered Care Philosophy. The Planetree website states “Planetree is a non- profit organization that provides education and information in a collaborative community of healthcare organizations, facilitating efforts to create patient-centered care in healing environments.” (Planetree, 2012) In the course of my employment as an imaging technologist at the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs, two coworkers and I were picked by management to create a Planetree Project for the radiology department. We were told that we should keep in mind that it was the...

...Cheerleading 101 Cheerleading began for me at the age of twelve. In the past I had played soccer, basketball, softball, did ballet. Basically every activity my mom could possibly put me in. All of those activities were okay, but cheerleading became something that was special to me. I first began cheering in middle school for the Hazelwood West Junior Wildcats. I cheered on the team throughout middle school literally dedicating all of my free time to cheerleading. I lived, ate, and dreamed cheer. I went on to continue cheering throughout my high school career, cheering for all Hazelwood West athletics, including: soccer, football, basketball, and wrestling. I was a hardcore dedicated athlete, and I had spirit like no other. From traditional sideline cheerleading to competition cheerleading I have really done it all. Being a top- notch cheerleader did not come easy at all though. It took dedication, practice, and determination. In cheerleading the most important thing is motion placement. As noted by the National Cheerleading Association, motions must be sharp, strong, and neat. (National) These motions come into play in more than just cheers and sidelines you perform. They are in the dance move that you will execute and the stunts you intend on hitting. Proper arm placement is also a must. You want to avoid things like cocked wrists, bent arms, and overextension of the arms. The basic motion of a cheerleader is the ready position, which is hand behind your back with your feet...

Nursing Informative Essay

...Nursing Informative Essay Imagine just for a minute being in a hospital. Have you ever wondered who is always taking care of different patients almost at the same time? Or how it is possible that medicine is so advanced compared to years before? I have the answer. The nurse is the person in charge of taking care of patients, and medicine is so advanced thanks to the technology we have nowadays. I chose to be a Registered Nurse (RN), but I know is not an easy job because they have to perform different job duties. Not everyone can become a nurse, in fact, to be one, you need some requisites first. Afterward, medicine has become improved because of the advances we have on technology. When people choose Registered Nursed (R.N.) as their career they have to perform various job obligations. According to a website called “Monster” registered nurses have to “provide direct patient care and report any changes in patient status to the doctor treating the patient”. The nurse also “needs to keep in contact with the patient to let the patient know he is in good hands and good care”. In addition to that, the doctor always “needs to be informed about any change in the patient’s health” so he knows what medicines give the patient to become healthy again. Additionally, the same website also addresses that “they also need to update the condition of the patient to their family members and about the trainings, medicines and precautions that the patient needs to take as per plan of care...

...Uche Ihenacho Professor.Borror English1A 19 March 2012 Athlete Safety When sports were first created, they were presented with minimal rules and a lack of knowledge for player safety. In today’s time, all sports have a specific set of rules to go by, and there are medical teams present at every sporting event. Most would say that every sport is prepared for the injuries that occur, but that is not the case when it comes to concussions. Recently in sports such as, Boxing, Hockey, and Football, there have been new rules created to either prevent concussions, or to emphasize the seriousness of concussions occurring. In the sport of boxing, a boxer can be knocked down multiple times and is allowed to keep fighting if they can seem alert by standing up before the ref counts to ten, many believe boxers are receiving concussions when knocked down and should not be allowed to keep fighting. In the NHL or National Hockey League, players are constantly being smacked into the arena glass by opposing players and many players fall head first on the solid-seeming ice, which can easily result to a concussion. The NHL is currently to figure out a way to slow down the game speed of hockey to lower the number of concussions, which have doubled since the previous season. In the NFL, players who now commit head to head contact tackles will be fined and can also be suspended if felt...

Two destinations that interest me are Branson, Missouri and Cozumel, Mexico. Both destinations have a variety of activities for me to enjoy while vacationing, but the expenses are quite a bit different. Cozumel will cost more, but I believe I will enjoy the Caribbean cruise more than I will enjoy relaxing in the mountains of Branson. Choosing a vacation getaway can be stressful but exciting. Even on a budget, it is simple to plan an affordable vacation. Two places I would like to vacation at are the mountains of Branson, Missouri and a Caribbean cruise to Cozumel, Mexico. In Branson, there are almost limitless attractions to enjoy. While relaxing in a cozy cabin in the mountains, I could enjoy the peace and quiet nature with beautiful scenery, or I could visit some of the attractions around the area. There is a cabin called the, "Beary Cozy" cabin, and it has one bedroom and one and a half bath. Cleopatra Informative Essay

...Who Was Cleopatra? People see Cleopatra as just a beautiful Pharaoh, living in her temple with people at her feet. Something you may not realize is that she’s a killer. There’s more to her background story than meets the eye. Cleopatra was a manipulative woman, beautiful’s a strong word. A deeper fitting word to help would be, ew. The problem’s that she would use herself to receive what she wanted. This might have helped her brother and sister’s “mysterious murder” stay hushed. Her childhood played an extraordinary role in her life and accomplishments. If she was born to a different person, she wouldn't've been able to rule the throne. Another way to receive the throne, was she needed to kill her own brother and sister. Her and her brother were born at the same time. Her sister was ruling. She needed to leave. Once she was killed, Cleopatra needed to rule with her brother. She killed him herself, rather than hiring a spy to kill him, same thing she did her sister. Finally, the throne was hers. After three years of ruling, Cleopatra met Julius Caesar. Cleopatra, now on her fourth husband, married Caesar. After they married, Caesar asked her to move to Rome with him. Cleopatra accepted and moved there with him, leaving Egypt in someone else's hands. While they were in Rome, Cleopatra gave birth to four kids. There names were Caesarion, Alexander Helios, Ptolemy Philadelphus, and Cleopatra Selene II. Alexander Helios, and Ptolemy Philadelphus both died during childbirth. While...
