Being told you or a loved on has to go on chemo can be a very scary thing, but what I find scarier than that is Chemotherapeutic treatments are not cures for diseases, they are simply treatments. And yes I used the word diseases and not cancer nor types of cancer. Chemo is used for more than cancer even though it actually cures nothing. One of the most well known diseases that chemo is used to treat (aside from cancers) is an autoimmune disease called lupus. Chemo being used to treat Lupus is better know due to Selena Gomez being diagnosed with Lupus an Autoimmune disease, though some people think Lupus is a try of cancer due to the chemo( it’s not) but I digress. Chemo may not always be what is best for someone who has been given the option …show more content…
Patients with lupus going on CellCept may experience one or more of these side effects, “Nausea, Headache, Vomiting, Gas, Diarrhea, Loss of appetite, Stomach upset, Tremor, Insomnia, Anxiety, Numbness and tingling feeling, Swelling in the hands and feet” according to “Chemo for Lupus Treatment.” “Chemo for Lupus Treatment,” also states that patents on CellCept are more likely to later become cancer patients after being on CellCept, though lupus patients have a high chance of developing cancer to begin with CellCept tightens that risk. Methotrexate is a type of chemo used to treat those with, “a variety of cancers including lymphoma, leukemia and osteosarcoma,” according to “Chemo for Lupus Treatment.” The side effects of this type of chemotherapy are, “Temporary hair loss — though on such a low dose for lupus, it is not typical and is more often not total hair loss, Nausea, Vomiting, Acne, Boils, Pale skin, Rash or itching.” This type of chemo can only be given to those who are not breast feeding and have a negative pregnancy. And both men and women should be using protection when having sex for a minimum of 90 days after they stop taking Methotrexate. (once again from “Chemo for Lupus Treatment.” Cytoxan is a drug that is, “used to treat leukemia, ovarian cancer, neuroblastoma, eye cancer and breast cancer, in …show more content…
Aside from side effects cancer can still come back after chemo. According to “Why some cancers come back,” one reason cancer can come back is, “the original treatment did not get rid of all the cancer cells and those left behind grew into a new tumor.” Another reason given is, “some cancer cells have spread to other parts of the body and started growing there to form a tumor.” There is a 1% to 3% chance of the cancer a patient was treated for coming back accord to, “Second Cancers.” In the article, “Why some cancers come back” —when talking about chemotherapy drugs— it is said, “it is unlikely that any chemotherapy treatment will kill every single cancer cell in the body.” Therefor it it is likely that even after chemotherapy has been completed cancer patents are not actually, “cancer free,” though many people who went though chemo claim they are for the simple fact that they have finished chemo without knowing that most likely some cancer cells still exist in they’re body. In, “Why some cancers come back,” it is said, “The remaining cells will be killed off by the body's own defenses (immune system) or may die off naturally.” But the body is quite damaged from the chemo and they’re immune system may not be active for a while after chemo so some cells could continue to grow because the body is not strong enough to fight. According to, “Why some
