I. INTRODUCTION
A. How many of you plan to move out next year? How many of you are living in apartments now? I’m sure all of us have had or will go through experience in furnishing it. We are all students and don’t exactly have the money to fancy up our living spaces, but even on a budget it’s possible to able to furnish your apartments nicely.
B. In a NY Times article, John Gomes, a listing broker of CORE Marketing Group, mentions the importance of furnishing an apartment. John mentions how the units didn’t begin to sell as quickly until he refurnished his model units.
C. Last summer I actually helped out a friend buy some of her furniture pieces and is going through that process right now, and there are some tips that I’ve picked up along the way.
D. Furnishing your apartment can be time-effective and cost-effective and both is possible on a budget.
E. Transition: So I’ll be giving you tips on prepping before you go furniture shopping and where to get them.
II. MAIN POINT #1
A. The first thing you’re going to want to do is make a list. Lists are so important!
B. Shelby a blogger from myfirstapartment.com mentions a few different techniques in one of her blog posts that you could use to go about making the list, one of them being a sectional technique:
i. So first you would start by sectioning off the different areas of your living space: living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom etc. ii. Then you will make a list of everything that you would put into that area like bed, desk and lamp for the bedroom. Maybe a couch, a rug, and a table in the living room etc. iii. Then go back to your list and edit it down to the bare “necessities”. The rest you can buy as you live there, but for now try to focus on the things you plan to bring when you move in.
C. Transition: Now that you have a list of the things you need, now you just need to know where to get them.
III. MAIN POINT #2
A. Steve Harper, one of the bloggers for Apartmentguide.com, a rental resource site which also has a blog feature, mentions quite a number of venues to look at.
B. First place you want to look is in your own house.
i. If you already own it, bring it. Nothing is cheaper than free. Your friends and family are good resources as well. ii. Another place to look is work or school. Check with the office manager to see if there’s any old furniture you can take off their hands.
C. Other places are discount stores, thrift stores, dollar stores, and places like Goodwill etc.
i. If you don’t mind used furniture, you can find some great deals at these places. Sometimes all these furniture needs is a slipcover or some paint to have it look… something like not from a thrift store.
D. There are online options as well, but I will most definitely be wary of these.
i. Places like Craigslist and Freecycle are good places to check out for good deals, but I would definitely be very careful when going through with a transaction. Remember to always have someone with you for pickups and pay using a secured site like PayPal or pay in person. ii. Another option is social media! Actually, there is a UT Facebook group called UT Buy/Sell/Trade/Free. It consists of mainly UT students and they sell a variety of things and especially near the end of the semester a lot of furniture tends to circulate.
IV. CONCLUSION
A. Furnishing your apartment can be cost-effective and time-effective and it’s all possible on a budget.
B. Furnishing your apartment is important because it leaves an impression not only on others but affects just how comfortable you are in your temporary home.
C. With prep work you can save your time and by looking at outside-of-the-box venues you can save money as well.
D. I hope these tips helped lessen the burden of furnishing your apartment, and next time we can talk about decorating.

My Informative Speech Compared To My Shield Speech

...I was much more prepared for my informative speech compared to my Shield speech. All I did to prepare was make sure my outline was done and write notecards. I felt fairly comfortable in front of the class. I knew what I was going to talk about, my topic was not too hard to get enough information in four to six minutes without leaving anything out. The speech went well. I was in the time limit. I had good eye contact. My technology worked perfectly. The only thing I did not do was verbally cite my sources. Once I was done, I instantly thought about not citing my sources. I originally planned to cite each source at the end 0f each main point. I forgot about the first source and then quickly decided while giving my speech that I would throw them...

Informative Speech Reflection Paper

...Abubakr Mohamed 1. What I most liked about my speech was the first three and a half minutes because I started out my speech with confidence and strong voice that carries throughout the room. I also followed my outline and stick to it which made my purpose clear and showed the importance of the topic to the audience. Moreover my eye contacts was on entire audience , my posture was good , legs did not cross, no leaning on podium, and my hands movement was minimal and did not move too much which is the case when I usually talk to people. I think I also was able to show the importance of my topic to audience by getting their attention. I avoided making my speech to technical so it will be easy for those who are not familiar with the topic to understand. 2. After the three and a half minutes I started to rely heavily on my outline instead of eye contact and that the main point I need to work on. Also, I had multiple problems with stumbling over my words and using fill in words instead of speaking clearly and using very descriptive words. Furthermore, I saw that I tended to sway a lot, and that is something I will consciously try to fix during my next speech. In term of content, my outline needed more information and examples that will encourage the audience to ask questions after the speech and that will reflect their interest in my speech. For delivery , I was very nervous and I stumbled over my words and I had to pause longer than I should to recall my points ...

...COMM 10- Elements of Public Speaking Master Make-up Artistry (Informative Speech) Specific Purpose Statement: To inform my audience about the three major types of make-up needed to be a master make-up artist. Central Idea: High Fashion, Character and Prosthetic/Special effects make-up are all skills required in order to be considered a master make-up artist in the industry. Introduction When I was about 3 or 4, I remember watching my mom put on her make up and being completely fascinated by it. Well being the curious little kid that I was, I decided to be exactly like mommy and do what she did. Bad idea! I ended up in the emergency room because I had super glued by eyelashes together. Needless to say, my first experience with “make-up” was not what I’d call great. Since then though, I have grown to love make-up and so I started to wonder what makes someone a master of makeup. Body I. High fashion make-up is the foundation or rather the basics of all three make-up types. A. It’s used to identify a person’s skin type, bone structure, eyebrow and face shape. 1. Identifying all these factors into helping determine what products to use on an individual. B. Its application is solely for beauty purposes. 1. You mostly see this kind of make-up done in editorial spreads in magazines, on television, in films or on the runway. II. ...Informative Speech Introduction 1. In the contemporary world, underage drinking has become a global phenomenon especially in the developed countries such as in the US. As a result, the Oklahoma State has taken various measures to curb the vice. This is the reason behind the enactment of the Underage drinking laws-Social Host Law. The law was enacted in order to; a) Minimize the circumstances that lead to death of a minor or suffering physical injuries b) To enhance concentration at school especially for the minors c) To make societies responsible for their young people and develop virtues that would lead to productive work in future d) Promote healthy social life Body (Translation: I will begin by outlining the aspect of underage drinking, Oklahoma’s Social Host law and specifically where Cody’s law emanated from) 1. Consumption of alcohol by the young people in the US is prohibited especially for people who are below 21 years. However, despite the minimum age that is set for people who buy alcohol being 21 years in all the states, the legal requirements varies significantly. For instance: a) Wagenaar and Melvin argue that some states have exceptions whereby they allow some individuals who are below 21 years to consume alcohol (37). This indicates that the laws are not uniformly implemented across the states. b) In Ohio State, the social host law has not been limited to the drinking parties by the underage. Therefore any action that is undertaken by an underage guest...

...Ma. Sarah Katrina F. Santos June 16, 2014 11229888 SPEECOM - C32 Informative Speech How many of you thinks that having more customers is better than having fewer customers for a business? Can I see a show of hands? Alright. I presume that for those who said yes, which is the majority, raised their hand for the same reason. More customers mean more people buying and more people buying mean more profits for the company, isn’t it? Sounds sensible but I hate to break it to you but those of you who said yes are wrong. Today I will transform that thinking to exactly the opposite. I will introduce based on a new study the idea of ‘less is more’. Focusing on a smaller number of customers could help a company speed up growth, increase profit and improve long-term health. I am going to talk about how top companies gain customers, how they keep them and how these customers help them in expanding their business. They don’t need a lot of customers, just the right ones to keep them on top. First point is, fewer customers can speed up the company’s growth. Would you believe that some companies actually go out of business because of too many customers? Yes, that is true. The problem with these companies is they get very overwhelmed with the influx of customers that they forget to establish a connection with their customers. According to Forbes, this is one of the top 5 reasons why 8 out of 10 businesses fail - because they are not really in touch with their customers...

...People all over the world communicate each and every day. But 93% of communication is nonverbal. That only leaves 7% of communication as actual words. It's important to recognize that it's our nonverbal communication—our facial expressions, gestures, eye contact, posture, and tone of voice—that speak the loudest. When we interact with others, we are continuously giving and receiving wordless signals. All of our nonverbal behaviors—the gestures we make, the way we sit, how fast or how loud we talk, how much eye contact we make—send strong messages. These messages don't stop when you stop speaking either. Even when you're silent, you're still communicating nonverbally. Oftentimes, what comes out of our mouths and what we communicate through our body language are two totally different things. When faced with these mixed signals, the listener has to choose whether to believe your verbal or nonverbal message, and, in most cases, they're going to choose the nonverbal because it's a natural, unconscious language that broadcasts our true feelings in any given moment. The way you listen, look, move, and react tells the other person whether or not you care. When your nonverbal signals match up with the words you’re saying, they increase trust and clarity. When they don’t, they generate tension, mistrust, and confusion. TIPS Pay Attention to Nonverbal Signals- these signals can convey important information that isn't put into words. By paying closer attention to other people's...
