Getting to Know Your History

Author: Lyla Jenings
Subject and Grade Level: Social Studies for 3rd grade
Time Required: 2 weeks for 2 hours daily
Materials and resources needed: Internet Access, Social Studies Book, Library, computers, maps
Lesson Overview: This lesson will help students to learn about where they live. There focal point will be set on attractions in their areas such as neighbors, restaurants, amusement parks, gas stations, malls, schools and churches. This lesson will enable them to have a clear understanding of what their environment consist of which will offer them a better view of their history and geographical life.

Goal of the Lesson: To understand the history of their neighborhood or district

Objectives: After completing this lesson, students will be able to appreciate the lifestyle they possess. They will also be able to understand how the population of people lives such as low, middle and upper class families. They will be able to distinguish this by observing their surroundings when they are out with their parents or other family members. Students will be able to forecast how and where they want to live when they grow up. Students will be able to think ahead and decide on what type of career they want in order to have the things that surround them for example: a nice car, a big house and nice neighborhood. With this lesson, it will enable them to understand the importance of environmental living.

Investigative Questions:
1. What is the demographic of people that live in the neighborhood?
2. How many places of interest (restaurants, schools, amusements parks, etc) are in the area of where you live?
3. How many people hang out on the corners of the street?
4. How many cars are parked at the churches, restaurants, gas stations, and mall?

Learning Practices:
Students will use document analysis, parent analysis, and participant observation analysis. Using the document analysis method, students will be given a notebook and writing tool to document every detail necessary to make a connection to history. They will confer with their parents for information concerning history and they will use their eyes for observing people’s actions, external looks and personalities. Students will be engaged into this lesson because it will not only be something exciting, but it also helps them to think and be more aware of what type of society they are living in.

The lesson will be taught by explaining to the class what social studies relate to in relation to history. Students will individually work to access the different findings in their social studies books that relate to the area they live in. A field trip will be taken to observe the view of the community they live in. Students will be asked to write down every school, church and points they see. I, the teacher, will talk to the students about the community they live in after the trip has been completed. Students will be asked to create a portfolio on their findings. Small groups will be made for students to freely share their information with others and compare. I will then walk around for assessment evaluation and interview each group to talk a little about their findings and how they view their community.

Students will manage their time by interacting with other groups to share their findings and how they came to the conclusion of what type of community they live in.
