Abstract
Nursing profession, dynamic in nature is fast growing globally in the industry of health care. Nurses need to be trained and educated to provide quality care and safety to patients in an affordable manner in today’s world. The 2010 Report on the FUTURE OF NURSING: Leading Change, Advancing Health released by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) gives a detailed discussion with recommendations on Transforming the health care system at the Nurses level. This paper discusses the impact of the IOM report on Education, Practice, and Leadership for nurses.

IMPACT ON EDUCATION

According to the report of the IOM health care system requires a comprehensive transformation to provide quality, safety, accessibility, patient as the center of focus at the same time it should be affordable to the common man. The 2010 Affordable Care Act is the biggest transformation since the creation of Medicare and Medicaid programs in 1965. To make a difference in this nursing education needs to be improved at all levels. Nursing education is an ongoing process and it should be made available to all practicing nurses whether an LPN/LVN, ADN or BSN.
The report determines the fact that all nurses achieve an optimum level of training and education from an education system that caters to the academic requirements of nurses. Today’s health related chronic conditions like hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and mental health are increasing in numbers. The United States Health system was originally created to treat injuries and illness, which was a challenge in the 20th century.
The education that was given to the nurses then is not adequate at this time to deal with the present day health

In March 2010 President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to ensure all individuals in the United States will have access to quality health care ("Key Features Affordable Care ", 2013). Many organizations, including the Institute of Medicine (IOM), recognize that changes need to be made to the current health care system in order for Affordable Care Act to be successful. In 2010 the IOM issued a report reflecting changes needed in health care including: nursing education, nursing practice, and nursing roles as leaders (“Future Nursing”, 2010). Changes in Education According to the IOM report, nursing education is one area of health care that requires changes. Currently entry nursing is comprised of nurses with diplomas, associate degrees, baccalaureate degrees, and master's degrees. The IOM's goal is to have 80% of nurses with a minimum of a baccalaureate degree and allow them to practice to the fullest of their education and training by 2020. Health care will be shifting to more patient centered care, focusing on health promotion and preventative care with less acute and specialty care. Review of the Institute of Medicine (Iom) Report: "The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health"

...The Institute of Medicine (IOM) partnered with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) in 2008, prior to the Affordable Care Act passing, stated a two year study on the nursing profession and changes needed to advance the future of nursing practice. The introduction of the report states the groups “established a 2-year Initiative on the Future of Nursing. The cornerstone of the initiative is this committee, which was tasked with producing a report containing recommendations for an action-oriented blueprint for the future of nursing, including changes in public and institutional policies at the national, state, and local levels” (IOM, 2011). This report also determined that nurses should continue to strive for higher levels of education and advanced training using an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression unlike the stair-step type systems currently in place that do not facilitate education advancement. So when Congress passed the the Affordable Care Act March of 2010, which is the biggest reformation of the healthcare system since the Medicare and Medicaid programs were first created in 1965, created even more of a need for more nurses in advanced clinical roles. According to Medicaid.gov, “The Affordable Care Act is actually two separate pieces of legislation; the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (P.L. 111-148) and the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 (P.L. 111-152). Together these 2 legislative acts expand Medicaid...

This report addresses the opportunity the United States has to transform its health care system into a higher quality, safer, more affordable and accessible system since the enactment of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) (Institute of Medicine, 2010). In the paragraphs to follow this paper will discuss how the IOM report has impacted the field of nursing and how registered nurses (RNs) will be acquiring higher more specialized education, ascending into leadership, and transform their practice. Impact on Education The acquisition of a nursing license in the United States is unique in the fact that there are currently several pathways to licensure. A person wishing to practice nursing may complete a hospital diploma program, a community college associate degree in nursing (ADN), attend a four-year college for a baccalaureate degree in nursing (BSN) or even complete a bridge program in which the individual already possesses a baccalaureate degree in another field of study learns nursing practice (Creasia & Friberg, 2011, p. 25). The report from the institute of medicine (IOM) recognizes these varied pathways to nursing as a benefit as well as a hindrance to the field (Institute of Medicine, 2011, p. 166). The benefit to the field is availability of nurses due to the attractive cost of education at the diploma and community college level versus the more expensive four year college route (Institute of Medicine, 2011, p. 168). The barrier of this pathway; however, has been discussed in the IOM report. According to research, 80 percent of the time ADN graduates do not continue their education onto the BSN level (Institute of Medicine, 2011,...
