...Day 1: Had my first day today and it was very interesting. First I had an orientation where we went over general guidelines for interns at Viacom and then we signed some paperwork. Played some icebreaker games and got a crash course in all the entities that Viacom owns such as MTV, MTV2, VH1, Comedy Central, CMT, BET. After I met with JC, one of the research analysts for MTV and I got a tour of where I was working and met fellow employees and met my supervisor Mitchell. I then attended a meeting with the research, programming and creative insight teams where we discussed millennials (people aged 15-30) and their media consumption. We watched clips about certain shows that were going to be aired and whether or not millennials would watch these shows. We also discussed other areas regarding media consumption. Day 2: I arrived early to work to start learning. The more the better in my opinion. I got acclimated at my desk and started learning the basics. I got a crash course in MTV and ratings since I am in intern in the research and strategic insights department. Then I attended a focus group regarding upcoming MTV events and gave input regarding the specific topics. Got acclimated with startrak, the system in which MTV/MTV 2 pulls ratings. Day 3: got acclimated with startrak even more. Learned some of the more difficult tasks associated with it. I learned how to pull the ratings for MTV and checked ratings that my supervisors JC, Cara, and Mitchell create. Basically its......

...You are working as an intern with MacTaggart Consulting, an organisation who deliver training on customer-related issues. As part of your training you have been asked to write an evaluative report on the customer care culture of an organisation of your choice. Other interns are based in different parts of the consultancy. You have been encouraged to keep in touch with each other and form a mutual support group. You decide to call a meeting with the other interns to discuss the report task. Your mentor says she would like to come along to hear how things are going and she offers to chair the meeting. Send out an invitation to the meeting by email. Since this is a notice of meeting it should include the topic, the date and time, and a proposed venue. You need at least four interns at your meeting. Don’t forget to ask them to get back to you with availability as well as the details of their chosen organisation. You will need these details for your agenda. Once you know who is attending, create an agenda for the meeting. Each intern will speak about the organisation they’ve chosen and how their research is progressing. This means each person will be responsible for one agenda item. Prepare your own agenda item. This will involve making notes on your progress so far; what you’ve found out about your chosen topic; what difficulties (if any) you’ve encountered; and what proposals you’re considering. You can create a brief electronic presentation if you think......

...The Internship Report Rationale ∗ (Eng 498/698) Because the student who does an internship receives credit from the university, graded credit determined by the technical writing faculty, there needs to be documentation in addition to the site supervisor's evaluation as a basis for that graded credit. Submitting an internship report not only provides the faculty with a document which qualifies the student for graded credit, it also provides the faculty with in-depth information about the profession they are responsible for preparing students to participate in. Furthermore, and of considerable importance, the internship report increases the student's responsibility by requiring the student intern to gather information and plan the report throughout the work experience. The student then has an opportunity to demonstrate maturity as a technical writer by presenting, analyzing, and evaluating his or her own work on the job. Report Content and Format The internship report comprises four parts, each involving a different kind of information and a different mode of written discourse: (1) introduction, (2) narrative, (3) analysis and evaluation, and (4) appendix. Introduction The introduction explains the setting where the work was accomplished and gives a sense of how the intern's job related to the entire work of the hiring organization. This section lends itself to the inverted pyramid organization, moving from general information about the entire organization to a......

...------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------- Sustainability of extreme working hours ------------------------------------------------- Situation Moritz Erhardt, a German summer intern at Bank of America Merrill Lynch died in his shower after 72 hours of consecutive work. He was an epileptic patient but the trigger of his seizure was (most probably) related with the long working hours. That such a thing happened was a matter of time. The working hours of interns and young graduates that want to prove themselves in investment banking or even banking in general is astonishing. The work-life balance of those fresh employees is non-existing. They perform brutal hours in order to be able to demonstrate themselves to get a full-time job or to be able to climb the ladder as fast as possible. They are merciless with their own bodies and do not know what the possible consequences are. The question concerning the long working hours was raised in court. “It depends on deadlines. Some of it is peer pressure. There is a general expectation in our profession.” said Juergen Schroeder an employee of the corporate finance department of Bank of America. “Being in the City is like being in a bubble. You throw yourself into it and forget about the rest of the world.” said a previous intern and now writer Polly Courtney. This demonstrates what the magic of the City does with people really wanting to obtain that unique position. Those......
