COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is a study and analysis of management problems and practices of international businesses, including the following: organizational structures of global corporations; production and logistics; human resources and labor relations; marketing and financial management; cultural, political, social and environmental constraints; and other relevant topics. Prerequisites: 41-300, 43-300, and 46-300. Credit, three hours.
YOU MUST BE OF SENIOR STANDING AND HAVE TAKEN ALL CORE MANAGEMENT COURSES INCLUDING ACCOUNTING, ECONOMICS, FINANCE AND MARKETING).

I. COURSE OBJECTIVES

* To familiarize students with the various concepts and techniques of international management. * To help students understand the role and importance of international management in the past, present and future. * To help students understand how the practice and discipline have gradually evolved. * To stress the importance of global linkages. * To highlight the many international constraints that exist on domestic economic policy makers. * To improve the skills of students in decision making through the use of case analysis and exercises in applying the concepts and techniques of international management. * To keep students abreast of current management practices through the review of journal articles and various publications.

The COB seeks to develop in its students analytical, conceptual, interpersonal and technical skills. To this end, this course is designed to provide students both knowledge and the opportunity to use these skills.

* Technical skills are developed through the study of courses in tool areas such as accounting, economics, marketing and finance.

* Analytical and conceptual skills are developed through the use of case analysis for which students are required to use tools such as accounting and finance in the analysis of cases. Making decisions requires conceptual skills.

* Interpersonal skills are developed through the use of teams in which students prepare and present a case to the class.

* Communication skills are developed through class discussions, team presentations (each student is expected to make a portion of the case presentation). This affords the opportunity to use oral communication. Written cases and article reviews are used to develop written communication skills. Discussions of articles in class also aid the development of oral communication skills.

* Integrative skills are developed through the holistic nature of the course. The course enables students to develop a “big picture” approach to managerial issues by making them use all the tool areas in decision making.

II. COURSE REQUIREMENTS

ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION IN CLASS DISCUSSIONS

This is an online course. All activities will be though Blackboard. There are no set meeting times. Activities are arranged in weekly blocks. You must complete each block of activities by midnight Sunday of the week. You may complete them earlier, but never later than the deadline. REQUIRED PARTICIPATION IN CLASS DISCUSSIONS OF CASES AND ARTICLES
You must be an active participant in all online discussions and offer meaningful analysis and convincing arguments for the position you take. Merely agreeing with what others is not contributing. You should, therefore, be prepared to make intelligent, timely comments regarding the issues raised in the cases and articles and discussions.
A contribution is defined as making a relevant and clearly articulated statement, either in response to a question by the instructor or in response/rebuttal to comments made by another class member. Merely saying “yes” or “no” without any elaboration or without having the full attention of the class does not count as meaningful participation. ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY/CODE OF CONDUCT
The Code of Student Conduct applies fully to this course. Any acts of dishonesty and gross misbehavior will result in your dismissal from the course and a failing grade. You may also be suspended or expelled from the university.

V. GRADES

Your grade will be determined based on the following:

TESTS – 25%

The number of tests have been reduced from 10 on 20 chapters to 4 on 14 chapters. There will be 4 (FOUR) tests. Test 1 is scheduled for Week 4 and covers chapters 1,2,3,4. Test 2 is scheduled for Week 10 and will cover chapters 6, 7, 8, 10. Test 3 is scheduled for Week 14 and will cover chapters 11, 14, 15. Test 4 is scheduled for Week16 and will cover chapters 16, 17, 18.

The exams can be found under Weekly Modules on Blackboard. Each test is due by midnight Sunday of the specified week.. You will have TWO HOURS for each test and there will be no makeups.

CASES – 25%

Each student has been assigned to one of six teams and each team has been assigned a case. All the cases are in the textbook. Note that apart from the team grade your individual grade will depend on the assessment of your team mates of your contribution to the team effort. Your case will be posted on Discussion Board. All readers can post questions, comments and suggestions. Your team grade will also be affected by how well your answer questions posed by the class and instructor.

Case Analysis – to successfully complete this assignment, the team must: 1. Provide a summary of the case 2. Fully address each of the case questions 3. Use at least ONE additional source in addition to the course textbook 4. Use APA format – cover page, 12 point font, references (including internal citations) 5. Submit your written case analysis and PowerPoint slides to me as Assignment. 6. Your presentation to the class will be in the form of PowerPoint slides (no more than 10 slides). You should post the slides on Discussion Board for review by the class. Make sure your slides tell the whole story since that is all your classmates will see and judge you on. You should also have question you are answering at the top of your answers so they have the proper frame of reference

GLOBALEDGE ONLINE EXERCISES – 20%

These will be done in teams. You are to do these exercises in the same teams as the cases. See the instructions on page 24 of the textbook on how to access the globalEDGE site or use http://www.globaledge.msu.edu.

Global Edge Exercises – to successfully complete this assignment, each team must: 1. Visit the global edge website as directed 2. Fully address each of the assignment questions/deliverables 3. Prepare a summary of their findings 4. Use APA format – cover page, 12 point font, references (including internal citations) 5. Submit exercise to appropriate drop box

TEAM PROJECTS/PAPER – 20% Each student will be assigned to a team. The team will develop a brief report on a selected topic. The chose topic must be approved by the instructor. The final presentation will be in the form of a PowerPoint presentation. Not more than 10 slides. Teams may select from the suggested list below.

Paper Requirements: 1. The instructor must approve the topic of the paper before any research is done. This is to avoid duplication of subjects by students 2. The paper shall be 12-15 pages in length (not inclusive of cover page and reference page) and have a minimum of SIX references (Wikipedia is not a valid source). 3. The details of the paper will fully address the topic. The paper will contain at a minimum an introduction/background of the topic, relevant definitions, examples, a discussion of the impact of the topic on the global marketplace and recommendations and conclusions. 4. The paper will be completed with APA style format (12-point font, 1” margins; section headings, in-text citations, references) 5. A finished hard copy will be presented to the. Additionally, a copy of the paper and PowerPoint slides will be submitted to the course paper drop box and labeled as International Management Paper and have your names and team number.
No late papers will be accepted.
