Abstract

This essay will explain the usage of the internet and how society deals with it. The world known idea of suicide and cyber bullying have taken over the internet. The articles used to complete this essay are very informative about the person you may be on the internet versus the person you really are. Internet addiction is a well know idea but not a fully developed research. This essay also includes how the internet can create social vampires in society. Not knowing how to interact in real life but a internet sensation otherwise.

The internet has become a worldwide phenomenon where everyone has access to almost everything on the web. The books and articles available online about the internet and the different views and ways to use it has help many people realize that the internet is not all that it is cracked up to be. An article illustrates the addiction people have had with the internet over the past decade and how it has impact adolescents and young adults. “Internet users can be considered addicted if he or she scores high on six criteria” (Brown, & Blinka, .2012, p382). The six criteria they mention were salience (cognitive and behavioral), mood changer, Tolerance, Withdrawal Symptoms and relapse. These are describes as serious problems. The article emphasizes the ways the internet can change a persons’ communication skills when they are not online. The internet has a blind side effect on people who can differentiate between online activity and reality. “….some adolescents and emerging adults may be using the internet so much that it interferes with face-to-face interactions….” (p. 381). The authors are essentially saying that we become social zombies when we are offline, not knowing what to say and basically not being our true selves. People find themselves not knowing who they are and where they stand in the world outside of social networking. For young people internet addiction may be related to self-esteem issues. (p.382). The internet for some individuals is an escape from the outside whole, it is merely a safe haven where they can meet new people and behave the way they feel. It is no surprise when the authors found out that younger people where more active on the internet than adults. Unfortunately they were not able to find the addiction rate between adolescents and adults. The authors in conclusion to their article stated that their research results have limitations and that there is no real proof to internet addiction as yet.

Other article illustrates the good that the internet has brought to society and then there is the bad. Cyber bulling and the well known internet suicide, is sweeping the world with grief and turmoil. The article “Social Media And Suicide Risk” , is an article that explains the dangers of social media in society. The internet provides access to suicide information, as in how to commit suicide and lethal weapons that can be used. These web sites that provide this information are easily accessible from anywhere at any time. According to the authors, approximately half of the web sites on the internet are prosuicide web sites that provide information about suicide (Luxton, June, Fairall, 2012, p195). There are several ways that social media can lead to suicidal behavior. Cyber bullying has been a leading cause of suicide of long period of time. “Cyber bulling refers to when a child or adolescent is intentionally and repeatedly targeted by another child in the form of threats” (p: 195). Cyber bulling has a greater impact on adolescents and young adults especially if they are the ones being mistreated. Cyber bulling has not yet been recognized as a exclusive provider of suicide but it has a great risk of making people feeling unwanted and so having them isolate themselves from situation they cannot control. Social media allows anyone to create any kind of group. There are groups on the internet that allows people to join and discuss their suicide attempts and any related suicidal behaviors. Suicidal pacts are formed in these groups. A suicide pact is an agreement between two or more people to die by suicide at a particular time by a particular lethal weapon (p: 197). This form of pact is usually formed between strangers rather than a traditional pact. Unfortunately, there is no way to know who is a part of an online suicide pact.

In the book “Virtually you: The Dangerous Powers Of The E-Personality” written by Elias Aboujaoude, MD, the author discovers how the e-personality can be as self-destructive as it is alluring. He states that our E-personality may be in competition with our real life personality reminding us of our failures and how little our lives really mean. (Elias Aboujaoude, 2011 p:32). The author was a weekend assistant for a doctor in a small clinic, during this time he found out how the e-personality has change real life people and turned them into social vampires. With online web sites appealing to low self esteem individuals and chat rooms allowing you to be whoever you want to be, you forget who you really are offline. These online chat rooms allows you to say what you want and be who you want but when you have to meet a person face-to-face, these meetings must be terrifying with reminders of personal awkwardness. The internet not only messes with young people but also older individuals. Married Men searching for an exciting online experience, finds themselves in a tussle when their wives find out about their internet ordeals. The book is an explanation of virtual online individual and their offline condition.

The Use of Internet

...The use of internet has continuously grown due to the changes and improvements in technology and the growth in globalisation, meaning that businesses are able to access new customers in more markets and expand along with existing customers gaining easier access to the company. This then leads to an increase in profits for the business. However it can also be a negative impact on some businesses with the use of high street stores and branches not being used as often and therefore lead to a decrease in profits because of the increased use of the internet. The use of comparison websites are becoming more and more used especially for car insurance companies, which reduces producer’s profits. Websites like gocompare.com, moneysupermarket.com and travelsupermarket.com are few examples of comparison websites used for the comparisons of holidays and insurance. These businesses let you fill in the needs and information you have, to then show you a variety of products and services to fit this request and then you are able to compare the prices of businesses to find out what the best one is for you. By doing this, consumers do not have to spend long periods of time filling their details in for each individual business and ringing up many of them. This will benefit the smaller firms who may offer cheaper insurance than the larger ones as they are being more recognized and appeal to more people through the comparison websites and even though larger firms spend a lot of time and put a lot...

Acceptable Internet Use Policies

...Necessity of an Acceptable Internet Use Policy for Business William E. Boyle Point Park University Abstract This paper will argue that an Acceptable Internet Use Policy, combined with effective network monitoring and policy enforcement is an essential requirement for businesses to protect business assets and resources. It discusses the potential loss to business from employee misuse of internet access and the danger from external sources. Necessity of an Acceptable Internet Use Policy for Business The internet is an integral part of today’s business resources. Organizations, large and small use the internet to improve organizational efficiencies. Businesses use the internet for everything from worldwide sales using websites, workforce collaboration using email and network data access, and for business research. In most business organizations, all types of devices, from desktop computers to cell phones and PDA’s, allow workers to access the internet and send and receive email on demand. A 2008 study by the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that 53% of Americans are employed, and 96% of these workers have some access to these tools. (Madden, M. & Jones, S., 2008). This allows workers instant access to websites, email and instant messages, but uncontrolled access exposes a business organization to a great risk of financial loss. All businesses must manage this risk through the implementation of an Internet Use Policy combined with employee education...

...History of the Internet: A quick review. October 4, 1957 Sputnik was successfully launched into orbit becoming the catalyst that would bring about the collaborative creation of the Internet. Due to Sputnik's launch America took a greater interest into the development of space age technologies including computers. To focus on these advancements the government created the Department of Defense's Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). One of the greatest concerns that these organizations were focused on was the inherent weakness in the communication through telephone lines used by the government. 1962 J.C.R Licklider from ARPA and M.I.T proposed the "Galactic Network" of...

The Use of Internet Creates Adverse Influence on Teenagers

...Running Head: INTERNET AND TEENAGERS The Use of Internet Creates Adverse Influence on Teenagers Tabassum Akhter 13304131 Sec: 08 Course: English 102 Date of Submission: 14th August 2013 BRAC University The Use of Internet Creates Adverse Influence on Teenagers On Christmas Day, 1990, in a lab at Cern in Geneva, Switzerland, Tim Berners-Lee finished building the tools to create the World Wide Web (Krotoski, 2010). Twenty years ago, this act of releasing the technology for free had been a revolution. Twenty years later, this snowballing age cyber age – with Twitter, Facebook, Skype, YouTube, Google and a maze of other electronic avenues – has engulfed the lives of today’s youth, where playing out into the fields has been replaced by surfing over the internet. Researches show that 87% of the youth today go online, representing 21 million youth (Weiss, 2005). It has become a growing concern in the society, especially among the parents, about the cyberspace’s detrimental impacts upon the teenagers since it is concealed beneath the whitewashed faces of social media and other sites and generates addiction resulting in reduced efficiency of the students. Furthermore, it exposes them to the dangers of cyber bullying, and ruins the teenagers’ creativity and originality; not to mention, it also creates destructive impact upon family bonds. The creators of social media and other beguiling websites assert that the growth in the use of Internet is leading...

Privacy Concerns and the Use of Internet Cookies

...the use of internet cookies Jose Omar Garcia IFSM 201 October 21, 2012 Cookies evolved because they solve a big problem for the people who create web sites. They are small files stored on a user's computer as a text file and placed on the hard disk by a web page server. Designed to hold a modest amount of data specific to a particular client and website, they can be accessed either by the web server or the client computer. This allows the server to deliver a page tailored to a particular user, or the page itself can contain some script that allows the cookie to carry information from one website visit to the next. They are not used to run programs or to deliver viruses to your computer. Moreover, they are uniquely assigned to one computer in particular, and can only be read by a web server in the domain that issued the cookie to the user. One of the biggest concerns with cookies is they potentially violate an internet user's privacy, many times without his or her knowledge. Even though many websites guarantee protection of personal information, many people do not like the idea of their passwords or other sensitive data being stored. Therefore, internet browsers provide various privacy settings so a user can prevent the installation of cookies or clear them at any time. This paper will explore some of the ethical implication of using cookies in the internet environment, particularly regarding protection of personal information. The use of internet cookies...

The Pros and Cons of the Use of Internet for Educational Purposes

...The pros and cons of the use of the internet for educational purposes Starting out in 1996 as a research project, Google (a huge searching engine) grew into most users’ favorite site for searching the internet. Last year, Google made 29 billion dollars. That is approximately 929 dollars per second. Google is a good example for the age we are living in: we live in an age where we have access to more information and at a faster rate than any generation before us. There are both positive and negative side effects that come along with the use of internet for educational purposes. Keeping both the positive and the negative side effects in mind can help educators to evaluate whether or not their students should have access to the internet and, of course, to what extent. Due to sites such as Google, students can do research way easier and faster that it has ever been. I myself, for example, had not done any research in books before I started writing my final paper. This can be considered either as a positive side as as a negative side of the use of internet for educational purposes. Students have access to a lot more information by means of the internet than before. But this can be problematic if students are not able to differentiate between reliable and unreliable sources of information. Some sites do provide valuable good resources for students while others have lots of inexactitudes on them. Internet also allows contacting people. Students can now easily have contact with other...

How Does Internet Use Affect the Academics of Teenagers?

...love/hate relationship with technology. Many would agree that the internet is the best thing invented while other could simply do without. Because of the internet and technology we can do things such as ordering our Starbucks before we arrive and getting groceries delivered. But is all this technology affecting our brain in a negative way? (INSERT QUOTE FROM CARR) Studies have shown that our brains do not truly develop until age 25. According to the research by the Pew Research Center 93% of teens ages 12-17 go online (Lenhart et al 4). So my question to you is, can adolescents age 12-15 take in all the ever-changing technology and does it affect their development: specifically academics. Whether at home, school or the library it is assumed that most teenagers have access to the internet. Some may argue that such easy access helps students academically. We now have a tool that gives us instant information and answers, whether correct or incorrect. Are the days of tutoring and asking parents for homework help gone because the internet? Why wait for help when you can simply google it. Some parents and children see this in a good light-a goodbye to unanswered questions, a hurrah to technology. However the internet itself has no regulations. Children may get online to do homework, play games, or just surf the web. I personally think it is the parent’s job to regulate and monitor their children’s internet use. Although they will go to school and have free-range so to...

Use of Internet

...Higher education in traditional settings faces key challenges in finance and technology: the ability of potential students to afford rising costs and the ability of traditional universities and colleges to remain relevant in the digital marketplace. And, the success or failure of this model depend on whether the lessons of history are employed to keep pace in an ever changing marketplace. And through the lens of a globally recognized brand that lost its battle with dominance, the future for the current model of higher education may become obsolete raising ethical concerns that warrant consideration. With the costs of a traditional education topping figures in the triple digit thousands, perceived value of that medium has declined. In some traditional settings Instructor Led Training has been supplemented by online courses, often with more flexible deadlines in an effort to boost enrollment. This trend, in addition to the sheer number of "massive open online courses," or MOOCs seizing opportunity in the marketplace are positioning distance learning as the preferred medium (Carr, 2012). The additional challenge of remaining technologically relevant might best be viewed via the prism of the Kodak story. Having held a dominant position in the photographic film market for most of the 20th century, Kodak began to struggle for its failure to adapt to where the industry was heading. As a result, they filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2012 (Larish, 2012). And for higher...
