I observed my own nonverbal communication skills on two separate occasions. The first conversation I observed was a relaxed conversation with my husband. We were seated at our kitchen table. The topic of the conversation centered on home improvement projects we wanted to complete during the upcoming spring months. The discussion last approximately twenty minutes. The second conversation I observed was with one of my bosses at work. The topic of the conversation focused on dividing the duties of the vacant position among co-workers and not having to absorb all of the duties myself. The conversation lasted for approximately fifteen minutes. During the conversation with my husband, I noticed myself looking up and to the side several times while thinking and choosing the exact words I wanted to use to convey my ideas. I also noticed that we made direct eye contact four or five times. I was very interested in the projects we were discussing. I took note that I was very calm and relaxed. During the conversation with one of my bosses, I noticed myself leaning toward him while he responded to my comments. I was very interested in what he was saying and offering as a resolution to the situation I brought to his attention. I was a little nervous when I first began speaking to him and I noticed myself put my hand across my stomach. I removed my hand and put them to my side and I noticed myself making direct eye contact and becoming calmer. I noticed my boss making direct eye contact as well. His willingness to listen and his direct eye contact made me feel I was being respected and that he was listening to everything that I said. The behavior that I noticed that I exhibit frequently is looking up to the side while I am thinking and formulating my thoughts to search for the exact words I want to use. I noticed that I almost always give people my full attention when they are speaking to me. I found this exercise very interesting. I have always tried to be very aware of my thoughts and actions. This exercise expanded my awareness and made me aware of the meanings behind certain behaviors. Prior to this exercise, I was aware of many of my own behaviors but not necessarily aware of their meanings. I am constantly observing my own nonverbal behavior now while having conversations and what that behavior means.
