The interview took place in Subang Jaya, Malaysia, and was conducted by Wong Zu En and Mohamed Ilham Thayeb for the promotional writing, Taylor Institution. -Interview- Zu en: I am Zu en. Ilham: My name is Ilham. Ellie: Hello both of you, nice to meet you! Zu en: Nice to meet you! Can you please introduce yourself? Ellie: Ok. My name is Elly. My full name is Elly Changi Jeffrey. I’m from Sarawak. I come from family of two, my Sister and I. And I come from a single parent’s family. Ilham: For the first question. What is your education background? Ellie: I did my diploma in information management. And then I continued my degree in information management specifically in library management. Zu en: So, where do you work before? Ellie: Actually this is my first job. I graduated last year November. I started working here in December 2012, right after my graduation. So, is like one week after I got my degree then I come here straight. Zu en: But is this your first job? Ellie: If you talking about permanent job, Yes…. But for part-time I did before. Zu en: What job is that? Ellie: I used to work in F&B outlet, as retail assistant then after that I went out to be a bartender, it’s quite interesting. Zu en: So, what makes you want to be a librarian after being a bartender? Ellie: Because well, bar tendering was a part-time job, but I was educated as a librarian. So, that part I supposed to do. Ilham: Do you have a dream job? Or you want to achieve as a librarian?
Ellie: I like that question! How it relate to my past part-time job, is one of my dream job is actually own my F&B outlet. When I have a cashier and I have my own place to drink, it’s like more relax Environment. Then I have a space where I can support in a way local talent, like a stage, to do stand-up or you want to do your band or you want to come and draw or hand painting on the wall. What ever.
Ilham: So, its like a street cafe?
Ellie: Yeah, But of course my cafe must have a area for book. Like you know...the costomer come and drink a cup of coffee and then they have their books, and if they are finish with ther book and they want they can need their book, So, it’s like a rotating process. But you borrow one you put back one, you borrow one u put back one.
Ilham: So, why do you choose to be a librarian?
Ellie: I did not choose to be a librarian, it’s given to me. And when I did my higher education I wanted to be an accountant. But, because I’m from a pure science stream, then they actually want me to take physics studies. But I didn’t want related to science anymore, but in the end I went to computer science. But the thing is, the more I learn and understand about this field, the more I like it.
Ilham: So, why do you choose Taylors library?
Ellie: Good question! Because when I graduated, Taylors was one of the…honestly, one of the leading universities….one of the top library for private university, the resources was very up to bar what I done in Singapore. Because I did my practical in Singapore, so is up to bar what I did in Singapore as compare to all the other institution in Malaysia.
Zu En: So, previously you work in Singapore?
Ellie: I did my practical there for one and a half month, in Nan Yang Technology University.
Ilham: Why didn’t you continue working in Singapore?
Ellie: In Singapore their education standard is different, if you have a degree you not consider as a librarian. You still do a job of what SPM graduate will do in Malaysia.
Zu en: So, degree to them is still considered as low education?
Ellie: Yeah… So, if you want to be a librarian in Singapore you must have a master. And your bachelor degree must have something else than library management.
Ilham: Oh, it’s quite hard!!!
Ellie: Yeah… is kind of hard. That’s why when I was asking advice from the chief librarian where I did my practical, he ask me to go back and study some more then if I want to continue working in Singapore I can go back there when I get my master
Zu en: Master to become librarian?
Ellie: Yup.
Zu en: So, what is your daily task in Taylor?
Ellie: My daily task well… for my job description I basically have three. Desk work I have the liason librarian and have information intensive classes. But, now it’s as addition I have also the library Facebook and Instagram to take care of. End then so every morning what I do, I come to work I check my E-mail and I kind a basically take pictures and up-date status on Facebook. Then if occasionally if we have tour and visit like we had just now from Garden International School we bring them around for tours and beside it we also assist in admin role.
Zu en: Ok. So, from all this tasks, which tasks you like the most?
Ellie: The task I like the most is classes.
Zu en: Really? I though it will be like a tour…
Ellie: No, we have classes. We have information and PC classes. You’ve been into one?
Zu en: No.
Ellie: Fine! Ask your lecturer, what is your lecturer name?
Zu en: Miss Shella, she will conduct one for us.
Ellie: Miss Shella please sends your student to classes’ thank you… Anyway, yeah one of the… I like the most is classes because why I get to do something out of my routine job, because we don’t get classes every day you get it only in the middle of semester, where you start doing your assignment and the end of the semester where you want handing your assignment.
Zu en: And which task you dislike the most?
Ellie: I dislike the most…
Zu en: Admin work?
Ellie: Admin. Obviously admin work. Because then you must to go to procedure and reporting, is very boring, so I don’t like admin work.
Ilham: So from your entire daily task, do you have time for your personal activity?
Ellie: Yes I do have time for my personal activity, because work end at six. So, six to the next day I have things to do. I mean, I catch-up my friends and sit at the mamak, being a Malaysian I sit at the mamak. During the weekend if I have extra time probably I just go, you know… meet my relative.
Zu en: Relative!?
Ellie: I have relative… yeah my relatives…
Ilham: Alright. So, as a librarian what do you want to achieve?
Ellie: Damn that’s hard! Did I even write there? Ok as a librarian I want to achieve, not to say full but, I want to educate people.
Zu en & Ilham: Educate people? Like how?
Ellie: Because if you’re a librarian you… I for myself, I subconsciously tell people information they don’t even want to know.
Zu en & Ilham: What?
Ellie: Because I everyday dealing with information, yeah some subject are specify. So in the way…you know…In the world…. In the world with all the information available at the tip of your finger, some information are valuable, some are not valuable. But the thing is people tend to rely on that non valuable information, attend to believe it. Zu en: That’s so deep.
Ilham: That’s deep and from all your explanation, is it fun to be a librarian?
Ellie: It is quite fun! Yes. The reason why is because, let’s say for an example you are a doctor, I’m not underestimating any other field. But let say if you a doctor, you only learn medical stuff, you update yourself for medical stuff; you update yourself for a specific area. If you are an engineer, you update yourself for engineering stuff. But, as a librarian, because, like for myself I’m taking care of school hospitality, tourism and culinary art I was not educated in that field so, I have to learn about that field. Same thing goes if my friends need helps for her education school of communication school I have to learn about that field. So, in a way being a librarian you have to learn about a lot of things, a lot of different field of knowledge. So, that you can explain and know it better.
Ilham: So you can be smarter becoming a librarian. You can be educated more as librarian.
Ellie: Yes… Quite…
Zu en: Ok. So, are your colleague funs to work with?
Ellie: Yes, they are quite fun!
Zu en: Really?
Ellie: Yes, they are very cooperative and they care because we are in the same booth. It’s like more or less “I cover for you, you cover for me” So; the environment in Taylor is very conducive because we look-up for each other’s and they know when to be serious when is needed, and the know when to have a time-out.
Ilham: So, are you close to your top management in library?
Ellie: Well if you talking about being close, there is professionalism part where you don’t really get close because you don’t want personal judgment to influence yourself and stuff like that.
Zu en: So, what are the challenges being a librarian so far?
Ellie: Ok. One of the challenges, one of the main challenges in Malaysia to be a librarian is that to let people know you actually exist under your community of the institution where you working at.
Zu en: But, everyone knows what librarian is right?
Ellie: I ask you what do you know… what does librarian do? Before you know us, you say we sit at the counter “shhh” at the people right?! Chop book, chop book, borrow book, you got the stamp on the book right!?
Zu en & Ilham: Yeah…
Ellie: Put the book back and after that if I return that, I ask for money from you right!? See?
Zu en: Yeah true.
Ilham: So to become librarian, who inspire you the most?
Ellie: Hmmm….it’s a hard question.
Ilham: It’s a hard question!
Ellie: It’s a very hard question! If you talking about being a librarian. No one inspire me, because I was force in this field. But if you talking about who inspire me in life, you can say is my Mom.
Ilham: Wow!
Ellie: Yeah…because coming from a single parent background, you only have that one person to look-up to and she actually, shows me how to be successful in so many ways, how to gain respect, how to celebrate life, how to accept the world and how to make a difference in so many small matters.
Ilham: Your mom is a librarian?
Ellie: No, my mom is not librarian. She is an accountant.
Zu en: Oh really?! So, is she working now?
Ellie: Yeah she is still working, in a way by profession she called financial adviser.
Zu en: Wow. That’s quite expert.
Iham: That status.
Ellie: Quite a status.
Zu en: So, what do you think Taylor can do to improve the library?
Ellie: Well, number one I won’t say that, I wouldn’t say things that hidden mean. But, I think the students like to have more space to sit, more space to discuss. But they kind of forget that library is a silent space. So, what I wish thought of having for this library is to have one open space for everybody can make noise, can make discussion, can do dance and whatever they want.
Ilham: I like that idea!
Ellie: Because in the way not all student study in silence. Most students like me, we study with music, we study by talking, by screaming, by dancing.
Zu en: Study, dancing…
Ellie: Yeah that is the thing. Not everybody studies in silent. There are some people who need noise, who need to discuss, who need actual movement because their brain don’t function when they don’t move like myself.
Zu en: Different people have different ways, yes.
Ilham: So, from all the information you work as librarian for one year only right?
Ellie: Yeah.
Ilham: So, do you have any memorable moment?
Zu en: The most memorable moment in the library or in Taylor?
Ellie: Ok. The most memorable moment is not so memorable to anybody but to myself because that time I remember, I was only working here for two months and then they ask me to do an orientation but, they did not tell me how many people going to attend the orientation. And obviously I had to do the orientation for my own school but, when I went in to the class there were 270 people whom I need to talk to. That was very scary and I almost let go of things there from my inside but, I went through that. I made them laugh. A few of them remember me until now la, as the laughing librarian.
Zu en: Yes of course, so cute!
Ellie: I know! I’m quite…Thank you…
Ilham: So, did Taylors give you any bonus or training?
Ellie: That’s very challenging question…but yes. Taylor did give bonus and training are given base on your work needs. Let’s say for myself I went through presentation, workshop, I went through grooming workshop.
Zu en: Grooming workshop?
Ellie: Yeah grooming, how to dress up to work.
Ilham: So, did you need to dress up when you are working?
Ellie: Yeah…but actually my skirt is to short today because I did not do my laundry. But if other day, yes I do have proper cloth.
Zu en: So, you have dress code?
Ellie: Yeah we do have dress code. The Taylor institutions itself have dress code.
Ilham: So like in one week, Monday has different dress code, Tuesday have different dress code?
Ellie: Not really, but just dress proper and look smart and professional. But the thing about librarian, our boss, she likes us to wear blazer and especially when we meet somebody from outside the institution or during our daily job because it appear more professional and she like us to use heels...
Zu en: Heels?
Ellie: Heels, heels…
Zu en: Oh! Heels!
Ellie: Because I used to wear slipper everywhere, I kind of finding it hard to walk with hills but, I'm dealing with it and its okay and its fun.
Zu en: So, I heard that you have a slipper in your office right?
Ellie: Yes, we do have slipper in our office.
Zu en: A cute one, can you describe the slipper?
Ellie: How do you know!? Did you go under my table?
Zu en: Yeah, actually I go under your table.
Ellie: Oh my gosh… you crazy woman! My slipper is a Mickey Mouse fluffy, bed room slipper. All of us had one slipper in our office. My one is fluffy Mickey Mouse, very soft, bed room, bomb slipper. Which I went to do a tour one using that, I’m so embarrassed.
Zu en & Ilham: Tour!?
Ellie: Library tour with a slipper. I walk down to level two with that slipper and then I got called up because I was using that slipper, I didn’t realize.
Zu en: Really!?
Ellie: Yeah I did.
Zu en: Oh my god.
Ellie: Luckily the visitor is not here yet.
Ilham: Then they cut your bonus?
Ellie: No, I’m a very good worker. And I went to toilet few times with that slipper but because I’m kind of forgetting. Is quite disgusting, I throw it away.
Zu en: What!? Really?
Ellie: Yes, I throw the slipper away because I went into the toilet with it, is disgusting okay!
Zu en: Just once!?
Ellie: Not once.
Zu en & Ilham: Well. Ok.
Zu en: So thank you Miss Elly for your time. Hope to see you soon.
Ellie: Is there any more questions you want to ask me? Please e-mail me at EllieChangiAnak.Jeffri@Taylor.edu.my and I will reply to your e-mail within 24 hours, Working day! Thank you!
Zu en & Ilham: Ok. Thank you Miss.
Ilham: So, let’s have some dinner now.
Zu en & Ellie: OK!
Zu en: Off line!

Most of these institutions exist thanks to donations made it by average people and not government assistance. Every day there is more people living on the streets and the help is simply not enough, even when these kind of institutions exist. The people which suffer of poverty even when we see them like a kind of dog in the street, they are human and they want a decent life like normal people. Is normal to say that those poor people are living on the streets by their own choice, but like I said before, that is ignorance. That people suffer a lot of things, even things that we never going to feel, for example the hungry . The sad of these situations is that most of these people is...

Selecting the Best Person for the Job

...organization. Various selection devices help employers predict which applicants will be successful if hired. These devices aim to be not only valid, but also reliable. Validity is proof that the relationship between the selection device and some relevant job criterion exists. Reliability is an indicator that the device measures the same thing consistently. For example, it would be appropriate to give a keyboarding test to a candidate applying for a job as an administrative assistant. However, it would not be valid to give a keyboarding test to a candidate for a job as a physical education teacher. If a keyboarding test is given to the same individual on two separate occasions, the results should be similar. To be effective predictors, a selection device must possess an acceptable level of consistency. Application forms For most employers, the application form is the first step in the selection process. Application forms provide a record of salient information about applicants for positions, and also furnish data for personnel research. Interviewers may use responses from the application for follow-up questions during an interview. These forms range from requests for basic information, such as names, addresses, and telephone numbers, to comprehensive personal history profiles detailing applicants' education, job experience skills, and accomplishments. According to the Uniform Selection Guidelines of the EEOC, which establish standards that employers must meet to prevent disparate...

Long Report

...Cody Westwood 6/17/2015 Amanda Miller English 101 A Lot of Chili and an Interview. Throughout life one will most definitely find themselves nervously googling how to prepare for a job interview. Or find themselves as the host of a super bowl party with no idea what food to make to or how to make it for a large party of people. That is why the authors of “How to Interview” and “…Chili for Fifty” wrote their essays, to help others. At a first glance someone wouldn’t think that the essays have anything in common. Once one takes a deeper look into them it can be found that both essays can be useful to a young adult audience and offer helpful steps to completing separate tasks in everyday life. This is all done by using different writing techniques. Although both have a similar purpose the way each task is explained is different. For example, in”…Chili for Fifty” Eric Michalski says “… you could boil a cow’s head in. (Don’t ask how I know.)”(Michalski 359), “I hate Jalapenos” (Michalski 361), and “If you plan on moving the chili pot, which you shouldn’t, potholders are useful.” (Michalski 359). These examples show that Michalski uses a more informal tone, almost as if the reader is having a conversation with the author about how to make the chili. This makes the essay more enjoyable to read with his personal touch. In the article from Monster.com on interviewing the text is laid out in a more formal manner. The author uses bolded headings such as “Be Prepared to talk about...

Interview Tips

...Job Interview Answer: What is Your Greatest Weakness? When you're asked what your greatest weakness is, try to turn a negative into a positive. For example, a sense of urgency to get projects completed or wanting to triple-check every item in a spreadsheet can be turned into a strength i.e. you are a candidate who will make sure that the project is done on time and your work will be close to perfect. Note that the term "weakness" isn't used in the sample answers - you always want to focus on the positive when interviewing. * When I'm working on a project, I don't want just to meet deadlines. Rather, I prefer to complete the project well ahead of schedule. * Being organized wasn't my strongest point, but I implemented a time management system that really helped my organization skills. * I like to make sure that my work is perfect, so I tend to perhaps spend a little too much time checking it. However, I've come to a good balance by setting up a system to ensure everything is done correctly the first time. * I used to wait until the last minute to set appointments for the coming week, but I realized that scheduling in advance makes much more sense. * I would say that I can be too much of a perfectionist in my work. Sometimes, I spend more time than necessary on a task, or take on tasks personally that could easily be delegated to someone else. Although I've never missed a deadline, it is still an effort for me to know when to move on to the next task...

Identifying Written Communication Styles

...In the first example Bennie Yakos was inappropriate for asking when he will be hired. Yakos was wrong for assuming that he already has the job after just recently completing an interview, knowing that this is clearly a thank you letter for just getting the interview. With the second example, the student clearly has just created an excuse on to why he couldn’t have study. By using an excuse it doesn’t necessary means that a person is taking the blame or the fault but trying to persuade the opinion. While in the third example, John has generated an email to his team to inform them of a meeting taking place the next day. Depending on when the email was sent, some of the team member will not have a lot of reaction time to comply with the time hack of the meeting. Someone could have been away from their desk and miss out on the email. Some of the positive aspects in the letter was that he thank Mr. Gentry for the opportunity for interviewing for his company. Also he stated that he was impressed with the company mission and the package that is associated with the hired position. In the email John took the time out to let everyone know the time and place of the meeting. He let everyone know the topic of the meeting and how long it will take in his opinion to discuss all the topics. In the first example Yakos could have kept the letter short and straight to the point. Just by stating his appreciation for the interview and saying look forward to hearing from you. Example 2 was an excuse...
