Introduction
This report is to analysis an appropriate price of a Bic pen. To plan on purchasing 10,000 Bic pens each year for total five years. Through analyzing the material, Mfg costs, labor costs, SG&A and packaging, transportation and profit of a Bic pen to get a reasonable price. Material
According to Lemon (2016), Bic pen is made of tungsten carbide ballpoint, Brass tip, link, polystyrene barrel and polypropylene cap and tube. To be more exact, the ballpoint is made of tungsten carbide which can be found the price is USD 60/Kilogram in the Alibaba website. To use the density of the material(15.63g/cm3)and the volume formula of ball（r=0.5mm），to get the weight of the ball is around 0.00817g, thereby we can get that the price of each ballpoint is 0.06USD. Secondly, the brass price is USD 8/kilogram, which can be found in Alibaba.com. The weight of each tip brass is 1.28g (Pen Modding, 2016), so the each price is 0.0102USD. Thirdly, due to the length of ink tube is 10.2cm, the internal diameter is 2mm and the density of ink is1.11 g/cm3. Therefore, the weight of the ink is approximately 0.36g, and the link cost is about 0.003USD for each pen. Fourthly, the polystyrene barrel for ink remains in the pen which cost USD 1800/metric ton. It is necessary to use the outer diameter (3mm), internal diameter (2mm) and density of the material (0.95 g/cm3) to get the weight of barrel is about 0.45g, thus, per barrel cost 0.00081USD. Finally, the weight of a Bic pen is 6g (Start Right Supplies, 2016), and then reduce the weight of the link, barrel, ballpoint and brass tip, we can get the weight of pen cap and tube(3.9g), so the price of cap and tube is around 0.00464 USD.
Mfg Costs
According to the Bic Half-Year Financial Report (2015, Bic’tween us, p26), it is easy to see the production machinery depreciation and amortization cost was 43,033,000 Euros (46,871,543USD). There are 34% parts for production stationery (46,871,543*0.34=15,936,324 USD) (BIC'tween us - N°5, 2015), so, the Mfg cost for per Bic pen was around 0.0036 USD in 2015
Labor Costs
Due to the labor cost was 303,132,000 Euros (329,989,495USD) (2015, Bic’tween us, p26). Meanwhile, 34% parts for production stationery (329,989,495*0.34=112,196,428 USD), therefore, for each Bic pen, labor cost was approximately 0.0256 USD in the year of 2015.
Based on the Bic Half-Year Financial Report (2015, Bic’tween us, p26), the other operating costs was 239,849,000 Euros (261,099,621USD), for the stationery part, there are 261,099,621*0.34=88,773,871 USD. Thus, the overhead costs of per Bic pen was 0.02024 USD in 2015.
SG&A Costs
As Bic Half-Year Financial Report (2015, Bic’tween us, p14) noted that the expense of SG&A was 114,717,000 Euros (12,483,503USD). Then, for the stationery part, it is easy to get the data: 12,483,503*0.34=4,244,391 USD. Therefore, for per pen was 0.00969 USD in 2015.
Package
According to the packaging shipping boxes price (0.01 USD/carton) which shows in Alibaba.com, then, 10,000 Bic pens needs about 167 boxes because there are 60 pens in one box. Thus, each Bic pen needs to be paid 0.00167 USD for packaging.
Transportation
We choose UPS shipping company for shipping the 10,000 from Mexico to Canada, and according to the charge standard of UPS, the transportation price is 645.95(UPS, 2016). Therefore, per Bic pen can cost about 0.0645 USD.
Profits
The price of Bic Round Stic ballpoint pens, Medium Tip, 1.0mm, Blue, 60/packs is 10.19CAD (7.194 USD) in the Staples online shop. Thereby, each Bic pen is 0.1199 USD.
Conclusion
After analyzing eight steps of the Bic pen, the cost of per Bic pen is approximately 0.32USD, so that we will buy totally 50,000 Bic pens among 5 years, which expense 0.32*50,000=16,000 USD.

...Unit 2 Assignment- Contemporary Approaches Robert Sims July 10, 2013 MT140 Prof. Jessica Hoover The contemporary approaches to management, sociotechnical system theory, quantitative management, organizational behavior, and systems theory, have developed at various times since World War II, and they continue to represent the cornerstones of modern management thought. Sociotechnical system theory is a theory of management that believes technology merely constrains human action, rather than rigidly determining behavioral outcomes. Conscious choice can build good human relations into the technical workflow. On the total opposite end of the spectrum there is the quantitative management method that relies solely on technology. A quantitative management approach involves the use of mathematical modeling to find the best solutions to problems. This can be applied to a variety of workplace challenges, ranging from making decisions during product development to resolving employee conflicts. Organizational behavior is similar to the sociotechnical system theory, when the focus is more on human action than technology. Organizational Behavior is the study and application of knowledge about how people, individuals, and groups act in organizations. It does this by taking a system approach. That is, it interprets people-organization relationships in terms of the whole person, whole group, whole organization, and whole social system. Its purpose is to build better relationships......

...As a brief description of the subject in the study, the life cycle of logistics can also be maximized through establishing effective management organizing efforts to maintain a certain company’s operational structure that will avoid or prevent errors and mismanagement that can take place within the corporation. In this case, the 360 degree logistics can be found when there will be a capital expenditure that will be carried out to fund materials and human resources that will be helping to manufacture product. As soon as the product will be made and distributed to the market, there will be an exchange of commodity as well as financial trade value. This process will undergo the procedural profit taking to collect the monetary amount of profits that has been sold to the market. The monetary value will be distributed to the accounting department of a certain organization to fund services, raw materials, and salaries to employees that completes the life cycle of the business operating organization. Image is one of the most sensitive factors that should be taken cared in long-term basis for the reason that it can be used for the marketing plan that will promote the company’s products to boost sales to the public as mentioned by Ponstern (2008). Location is one of the most important considerations that will be considered for companies such as Panasonic because it is an electrical distributing company that aims to identify potential target market to maintain their production capacity......

...Ownership Structures By Martha Linn Intro to Business in a Tech World Professor Timothy Hawley 2 July 2013 The four main types of business ownership are: 1. Sole proprietorship 2. General partnership 3. Limited liability company(LLC), and 4. Corporation These differ from each other in many ways: how many owners, risk and liability, the ease in which they are set up and dismantled, and the ways they are taxed. In the following paragraphs I will attempt to explain and provide examples of these four types. In the case of sole proprietorship, the explanation is self-evident. One person owns a business and is in total control of all of the decision making, the risk and the liability. Any income is taxed as personal income, and all costs are assumed by the single owner. An example of this would be my friend Jenalea Johnson’s etsy.com store Jena’s Jems. She makes beautiful hand crocheted items for babies and adults, photographs them herself, and then displays them in her online store. She is responsible for all of the merchandise, the picture quality, the shipping costs, and the complaints from customers, if there are any. And her profits, if she realizes any, are taxed along with the income she receives from her “day job”. A general partnership is slightly more complicated in that you have two or more people involved in the business. All the owners of the business share in the financial obligations of the business. This is a common......

...Economic Systems, Socialism, and Supply & Demand Patrick Domench Intro to Business and Technology Professor Armes DeVry University September 7, 2014 The best system to handle a disaster of epic proportions is Capitalism. We live in a Capitalist system now and we have been through many natural disasters that have rocked our communities and we have always pulled together and gotten through everyone so far. We have even been attacked in New York, one of the largest cities in the USA, and we were able to rebuild. In the free market system the private sector owns most of the resources, this leaves the main function of the government to facilitate and aid economic activity. This is particularly strong in a disaster type situation because the infrastructure of the economy would be disturbed, so in this case the government would be focused on rebuilding and encouraging investment in the private sector. The private sectors main concern is profit and this greatly aids regeneration. A Socialist system would not be best in an emergency situation and I refuse to speculate that it would be. Firstly, the question itself is academically dishonest. It presumes an answer to a postulation or theory, then demands the student to support the results of that theory with "proof". It's like a rhetorical question, but sinister in its intellectual pre-suppositions. Like asking "Everyone knows that Crisco is better than butter in making croissants, now you prove it"! Secondly, it is......

...warehouses increase? Why do inventory costs increase as the number of warehouses in a system increases? * Inventory cost increase as the number of warehouses in a system increas because you have to keep an adequate supply of inventory at each warehouse in the system. * Transportation costs decrease due to the relative shorter distance of travel and thus fuel costs as well as a more infrequent need for shipping, when the number of warehouses in a system increases. * If the number of warehouses increase, the demand for transportation goes up. This increase in demand drives prices up. References 1. ...are the biggest and have the staff, expertise and overall resources to operate the IT and Operations departments. Also, both of these departments can be run remotely from the Cayman or Canadian offices, saving time and money by operating virtually. This method of functional and geographical departmentalization or matrix departmentalization, works well for HFS as it allows the “specialists” to concentrate on their area of expertise, lowers costs by reducing duplication of work, increases responsiveness to demands of the different markets HFS is operating in and allows efficient and effective management of large complex tasks. However there are some disadvantages as well, such as slower decision-making due to distance and time changes. This type of structure can sometimes make it difficult to coordinate across departments, especially overseas, and requires a high level of management skill. It can also increase conflict levels due to the time and coordination required. Because HFS uses a matrix departmentalization structure and there are four directors to report to, it automatically violates the unity of command rule. However with one director at each international office, there is not a lot of room for confusion as staff at each location reports to the director at the location they’re in. The span of control is obviously a little better at the Dublin and Geneva offices simply because they are smaller with fewer subordinates to control. All directors at all......

...meanwhile the remaining employees are working hard to get the job done while meeting the needs of our clients. It’s discouraging to see no reward for loyalty and productivity. Several of my co-workers are not motivated by this technique and find is repulsive that the same people receive positive reinforcement. On the opposite spectrum is that negative behavior is addressed more often than positive behavior. I am self motivated and do not feel the need to be recognized, but find it unfortunate that only a select few receive positive reinforcement while others are displaying the same behavior and receiving no acknowledgment. 3. If you were to run your own business, what motivational technique(s) would you use? Why? I would use the management by objective and job enrichment motivational techniques. I think the management by objective technique can be effective as it involves the manager and employee working together to set goals. This increases employee motivation as they feel part of the process and part of the company. Because the employee assists in goal setting process, they will strive to meet the goals they set. Attaining the goals may also result in a promotion, pay raise or other recognition. I think the job enrichment technique creates employee motivation as the process involves the employee to create or decide what they want to do. Having control can improve employee satisfaction and improve or create new skills. Employees can also gain a new......

...Homework - Week 1 Intro to Business & Technology Which economic system is best suited for handling a crisis of epic proportions (hurricane, flood, blizzard, forest fire, etc.)? Why? Natural disasters cannot be predicted. Americans, as well as people in communities worldwide, are not prepared for these types of situations. The economic system is best able to cope and recover in the event of these types of natural disasters. The free market system is the most able because it involves a sector owning most resources. This leaves the government’s main function as facilitating and aiding economic activity. The government is focused on rebuilding investment in the private sectors. For example, the government would introduce ways of lending money, such as grants and low interest loans, which would help low sector get on with their main concerns. Their main motivation would be profit, which would be greatly aid regeneration. In 2011, a tornado tore through Joplin, MO. Economics Professor Dan Smith researched the effects of economic freedom on disaster relief surrounding the aftermath. He wrote in the News Tribune: “In contrast to other recoveries in which federal and state governments orchestrate recovery, policymakers allowed the free market, voluntary sector to guide recovery in Joplin, demonstrating how effectively economic freedom can help communities rebuild after a natural disaster.” (Smith, 2012). As one of our discussion topics this week was based on......

... Supply Chain Management: CEO Decision on West Coast Expansion Yunior A. Espinal Colorado Tech University SCM 210 – Intro to Logistics / Supply Chain May 1, 2015 Supply Chain Management: CEO Decision on West Coast Expansion Section I: Introduction The main pro for having multiple distribution centers and shipping locations across the U.S. is to have the ability to meet customer demand at all major locations. Other pros include lowering the transportation and freight costs to diverse customer locations. Reducing the travel area when establishing multiple distribution centers and shipping locations lower transportation costs. The expectation is that multiple distribution centers will help to lower the time frame for customer servicing by meeting current customer demand. Effectively, linking demand with inventory (Fortna, n.d.). Intuitively, cons include the cost of land, buildings, labor, and equipment, for the development of multiple distribution centers and shipping locations. The rate of domestic sales for each region should increase faster than the rate of cost of operations for each regional distribution center. The benefit of having more than one international distribution center is to manage more effectively the distribution of international sales. Cons include the higher cost of labor (Blackerby, 2003). Cost of labor is reflective of the underlying exchange rate of the euro/USD or 1 euro = \$1.50. The cons of an international shipping location instead shipping from......

While the company had previously handled new product distribution in-house, this time Nikon realized that burdening its existing infrastructure with a new, demanding, high-profile product line could impact customer service performance adversely. “In our business, it’s not enough just to produce leading-edge products,” said Arnold Kamen, Nikon’s Vice President of Operations and Customer Service. “Having the ability — and visibility — to predict how much merchandise is available and when it can be distributed makes the difference in staying ahead of customers’ needs.” For Nikon, that meant applying its well-known talent for innovation to creating an entirely new distribution strategy and taking the rare step of outsourcing distribution of an entire consumer electronics product line. With UPS Supply Chain Solutions on board, Nikon was able to quickly execute a synchronized supply chain strategy that moves product to retail stores throughout the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean, and allows Nikon to stay focused on the business of developing and marketing precision optics.
