* Executive Summary

For routers to be able to effectively and efficiently distribute data across a network they need to be programmed with the network topology.
One method in which the network is "mapped" can be done by using routing protocols. The two main types of routing protocol are Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) and Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP).

* * Project plan

The study will be compromised of setting up two different network topologies and implementing the different routing protocols on each so that we can observe and record the positive and negative aspects of each protocol.

* Summary

EIGRP and OSPF are routing protocols used to advertise routes in a network. EIGRP was a cisco proprietary protocol, and OSPF is an open standard industry protocol, which means it can be implemented with non-Cisco devices. Protocols are set of rules and regulations, routing protocols are used with routers to establish a connection between them. This connection includes a procedure to select the best path based on a routing metric. This routing metric is what I will be investigating in the outlined project below.

* Aims and Goals

The purpose of this research project is to highlight the differences between the two protocols.
This be achieved by researching each protocol to identify its main characteristics and drawing comparison.
These comparisons will then be highlighted in a practical lab demonstration

* * Background and Significance

OSPF is defined in RFC 2328 which is an interior Gateway Protocol used to distribute routing information within an AS (Autonomous System) which is a group of networks under one single administrative control. OSPF is the most widely used routing protocol in large enterprise networks. OSPF is based on link-state technology by using SPF (Shortest Path First) algorithm which calculates the shortest path via link-states.

The Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP) is a hybrid routing protocol which provides significant improvements on IGRP. The hybrid routing protocol incorporates advantages of both Link-state and Distance-Vector routing protocols, it was based on Distance-Vector protocol but contains more features of Link-State protocol. EIGRP saves all routes rather than the best route to ensure the faster convergence. EIGRP keeps neighbouring routing tables and it only exchanges information that its neighbour would not contain. EIGRP is commonly used in large networks, and it updates only when a topology changes.

* Approach and Methodology

The aim of the outlined project is to identify the differences between OSPF and EIGRP.
This will be accomplished by investigating each protocol, outlining its main characteristics and demonstrating them in a lab environment.
I aim to investigate the following differences between protocols, including but not limited to: 1. Convergence speed 2. Ease on configuration 3. Topology knowledge 4. Protocol compatibility with hardware 5. Metric calculation 6. Topology update method
