The following 6 slides are an example (my writing) of how the introduction can be structured. If I were to use this as an actual introduction, it would be 2 paragraphs; I have broken it into 6 slides so that it is easier to see the separate pieces. Each of the slides has a note explaining its connection to the introduction.

Paragraph 1 This slide shows the general introduction of the primary concept (selfperception), and a secondary topic (generational differences) to begin the paper.

The so-called Millennial Generation, those born between 1982 and 2000, have often been characterized as narcissistic, self-serving, and because of social media sites such as Facebook, selfaggrandizing. There is plenty of evidence to suggest that this line of thinking is both fact and fiction. Indeed, some suggest that it is not generational, but rather developmental, meaning that the current age of the average millennial is somewhere in the 20s, which is a period when individuals often display inflated self-perceptions.

Paragraph 1 This slide shows the beginning of the literature review. The underlined portion is the transition from the previous idea/paragraph.

Trzesniewski et al. (2008) specifically asked this question, testing the hypothesis of whether there are crossgenerational differences in levels of narcissism among US college students. Their findings support the notion that the Millennials are no more or less narcissistic than previous generations of college students.

Paragraph 1 This slide shows the continuation of the literature review. The underlined portion is the transition from the previous idea/study.

Alicke et al. (2010) make the case that self-perception is not associated with a broad-based generational characteristic, but rather how the individual evaluates him or herself in reference to their local group standing.

Paragraph 2 This slide shows the continuation of the literature review. The underlined portion is the transition from the previous paragraph.

Conversely, Duguid and Goncalo (2012) studied selfperception in relation to the individual's social position (i.e. not necessarily generation-based), finding that those in positions of power have a tendency to see themselves as taller than they actually are.

Paragraph 2 This slide shows the continuation of the literature review. You will note that there is no explicit transition. The fact that there is another study mentioned is enough to suggest a new idea.

In a multi-national study, Loughnan, et al. (2011) explored the concept of self-enhancement in relation to socio-economics. They concluded that individuals in societies with greater economically unequal contexts demonstrated an increased tendency to see the self as better than others.

Paragraph 1 This slide is the transition from the introduction and literature review to the main body of the paper. The first sentence ties back to the literature that was just discussed. Then we briefly introduce the idea of our study. This will lead us to the Methodology section.

In three of these four studies, college students were the population that was studied. Our study explores the concept of self-perception among college students, yet in a different context. Using a survey instrument, we asked college students (i.e. 18-22) in Turkey to assess their own beliefs about themselves.

...Illegal immigrants receiving social services To most Americans, those immigrants who enter the USA territories without the required documents are viewed as more of law breakers than ordinary people seeking refuge from given hardships they were experiencing at their native countries. This notion has led to the denial of most of the social services the general populations do receive from the government. However, there is need to know that among the undocumented immigrants, there are genuine cases of people seeking refuge while others are people running away from conviction due to breaching of the laws of their native states. The problem arises in differentiating the two categories. There is need to extend social services to the undocumented immigrants as they are people just like the ordinary citizens. These people need these services because: it is unethical to deny them, they are productive to the economy, it is healthy and it is a boost to sound international relations. Being an illegal immigrant should not deter one from accessing education facilities. Education equips the learners with skills to contribute positively to the labor market. Failure to do this will eventually lead to the increase in poverty and crime rates. In other cases, these people may be denied the right to access public facilities including the means of transport, which is both unethical and or impractical (Immigration.procon.org). In such a scenario, it becomes easy for a legal migrant to suffer the...

Abandoning Innovation in Emerging Industries

...Soldiers Field Road Boston, MA 02163 Voice: (617) 495-8407 mtripsas@hbs.edu Preliminary Draft September, 2005 All authors contributed equally and are listed in alphabetical order. The paper has benefited from comments made by seminar participants at the Harvard Business School. All remaining errors are ours. * Abandoning Innovation in Emerging Industries Abstract Existing models of industry evolution describe a smooth pattern of emergence over time in which the number of firms in an industry increases, hits a peak, decreases as a result of a shakeout, and then stabilizes as the industry reaches maturity. Although this model has been well-accepted and the basic empirical finding holds true across a range of industries, we propose that the finding is not as robust as is generally assumed. We introduce an alternative pattern of evolution in which, during the emergent stage, an industry experiences a sharp decrease in the number of firms – a “mini shakeout” – before increasing again, reaching a final peak and undergoing a major shakeout as described in the extant literature. Using panel data across multiple product innovations introduced in the 20th century, we first show the pervasiveness of the mini shakeout phenomena. We then examine why some industries are more likely to experience a mini shakeout. Finally, using detailed quantitative and qualitative data on the emergence of handheld computers and digital cameras, we investigate why some firms abandon...

...repositioning of the “BMW Mini” brand C. Simms and P Trott . Business School, University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth, UK Downloaded by Myongji University At 05:37 14 May 2015 (PT) Abstract Purpose – This paper aims to adopt a consumer behaviour perspective and investigate the extent to which BMW has repositioned the new “Mini”. It builds on a previous paper that explored perceptions of the “Mini” brand. Design/methodology/approach – The study adopted a two-stage approach to data collection, consisting of 66 in-depth interviews with a cross section of important stakeholders with high brand awareness and knowledge. The paper develops a conceptual framework and offers a novel way for firms to consider the effects of their repositioning strategies on consumers perceptions of a brand. Findings – The findings reveal a substantial repositioning of the brand’s functional appeal, moving away from the car’s price as an appeal towards product build quality. Furthermore, the Mini’s symbolic appeal, which is based on its fun and sporty image, has largely remained in place. Practical implications – Firms need to recognise the importance of repositioning at both the symbolic and functional level. Originality/value – The paper presents a novel conceptual framework for viewing repositioning strategies and presents evidence of repositioning at both the functional and symbolic level.
