The Impact of Social Ties on Coalition Strength and Effectiveness: The Case of the Battered Women's Movement in St Louis, Social Movement Studies: Journal of Social, Cultural and Political Protest.

The world we live in has been one that has not been so equal to women. We have had issues that involve women that include the right to vote, being able to run for offices and fairness in the boardroom. Woman battle daily with the system of being submissive and knowing their place. There has been a social issue that is affecting women and young girls daily. The social issue is domestic violence. The issue has become more relevant in the recent years and has given the label of “battered women” to thousands of women today. The article selected for this week assignment is Gretchen Arnold (2011) The Impact of Social Ties on Coalition Strength and Effectiveness: The Case of the Battered Women's Movement in St Louis, Social Movement Studies: Journal of Social, Cultural and Political Protest. The article is a report of new research. The article is written based on results from a study that started in 1980s, but had new data as of 2006. The article was a research article based on the qualitative method of research.
In this case study, we see how there coalitions can come together as one to make a change to the problems of battered women. Women are leaving their homes, jobs, and a life they are familiar with to simply start over. Many are trying to save their lives and the lives of their children. These organizations that are put into place to assist them should be well equipped with resources to make this transition easy. While all organizations may have differences, these issues should be worked out within themselves or along with a mediator. The fact that one has a personal relationship with the organization may not be enough to do the job. The major finding of this article was that. This study has shown how the capacity of these organizations to do so successfully is affected by the quality of the relationships among their members (Arnold, 2011). In order for an individual to confide with a program there has to be some type of trust built in. Trust is not just for the victim, but all participating parties. This is very important for this forms that are put into place.
The field of sociology is the study of behavior of an individual or society as a whole. In today’s society social issues such as domestic violence has been replaced with names such as battered women. This is a social issue that has become a target of sociologist worldwide. Trying to determine what makes an aggressor commit these acts and more so what makes the victims stay. This was also in line with sociology in that it shows how coalitions can join as one to make better means of change than by doing it alone.
The purpose of this article is to explain the development of the strong and effective coalition amongst activist in social. This article is different from articles in non-scholarly periodicals such as magazines and newspapers because is it based solely on facts. These articles were not written on hearsay or personal opinion. Many times qualitative data is not used in writing non scholarly articles. They are based on one opinion and facts are not complied. Inform the next woman or girl that they are not alone. We need more people, groups, and others to speak from experience. Reassure them that they are not in this alone. It is better to get out of the situation before you want be able to make it out alive or battered worse than before. My blessing and prayers are with anyone that is in this position. Let’s Support. There is help!

Investigate a Social Issue

...Investigate a Social Issue By: Your Name Professor Sociology 100 November 4, 2013 Introduction: Social Issue Early studies of political and economic change in the Less Developed Countries (LDC) say nothing about women’s issues. In the past decade different organizations focused around women have heightened awareness of how women play an important role in the political and economic development. Women are significant to the success of family planning programs, bear much of the responsibility for food production and account for an increasing share of wage labor in developing countries. Women are very aware of the consequences of environmental degradation and can contribute to the development of a vibrant, civil society and good governance. In spite of their important contributions, women lag behind men in access to health care, nutrition, and education while continuing to face difficult social, economic, and political barriers. Women’s lives in the developing world are consistently hard. Often female children are less valuable than male children, resulting in higher female infant and child death rates. Gender Inequalities: Sociological View Gender is a dimension of social organization, shaping how we interact with others and how we think about ourselves. Gender also involves hierarchy, ranking men and women differently in terms of power, wealth, and other resources. That is why sociologists speak of gender stratification, the unequal distribution of wealth, power,......

Investigate a Social Issue

...Investigate a Social Issue Janell Tongue Professor Rabinowitz SOC-100 June 3, 2012 Introduction This paper is an overview of homeless veterans in the United States. I will discuss how this issue fits into the field of sociology while determining which sociological theories from our text apply. Next, I will explain what is known and unknown about America’s homeless veterans. Then, I will discuss the value of sociological research into this issue. Finally, I will determine if there are practical implications of sociological inquiry. There is a serious homeless problem that plagues many Americans, including those Americans that fought for our country. Although we tend to hold servicemen in high regard, many people are very insensitive to those veterans that become homeless. Most people believe that homelessness is due to controllable factors such as laziness or refusal to work. Nothing can be further from the truth. Veterans not only make up a disproportionate percentage of the homeless population, but also stay homeless for longer. In fact, veterans are at a greater risk of becoming homeless due to a number of factors including unique military skills not needed in the civilian sector, combat-related health issues, minimal income due to unemployment, and a shortage of safe, affordable housing. Prior to becoming homeless, many veterans at risk of homelessness have suffered from......

Investigate a Social Issue

...Investigate a Social Issue Soc 100 09/02/2012 The social issue that I decided on investigating is abuse. Abuse is defined as to treat in a harmful, injurious, or offensive way. There are many different kinds of abuse and is susceptible to anyone at any age and can happen to anyone and has been a problem everywhere for a very long time. Physical abuse is often the most easily recognized form. Sexual abuse is any type of sexual contact between an adult and anyone younger than 18. Emotional abuse can be the most difficult to identify because there are usually no outward signs of the abuse. And neglect, which is difficult to identify and define. At times abuse is difficult to recognize, especially if it is someone whom you have lived with for many years or a close friend. It is mainly children and the elderly who tend to get abused. If a child has been abused for years, they may think that it’s just the way life is and nothing can be done about it. Others may blame themselves and do not reach out for help. Also, when people see the way their parents are abusive, they think the act is okay. Also known as domestic abuse, in which one person in an intimate relationship or marriage tries to dominate and control the other person. Domestic violence and abuse are used for the sole purpose to gain and maintain total control over a person. According to www.childrensrights.org, in 2009 there were 3.6 million reports of child......

The thesis statement lets the reader know what to expect in your letter. Social Network Case Study

...Problem statement Social networks are nowadays considered by many academic and business experts as the next frontier of the ways in which communication is enacted by individuals in contemporary society. It is easy to infer how relevant are social networks in the private lives of many individuals. The social network Facebook has now experienced more than 1.5 nillion active users worldwide. This surge is justified in part by the ease through which social media users can interact instantaneously without the necessity to be in the same place, and in part by the fact that users enjoy themselves by using social networks on an extensive basis, as recognized by many experts. Online communities are made able to share content, comments and opinions directly,...

Current statistics are citing gigantic numbers of the quantity of data that users generate - 2 000 queries on Google and 48 hours of video uploaded every minute are just some of the examples of the humongous size of information created online. This data is valuable due to the increasing number of e-commerce businesses employing the Web as their main platform for exchanging goods for value. Moreover, online data has become a topic of interest for marketers, researches, advertisers and publishers trying to gather as much information as possible in order to improve target advertising and deliver tailored content to their clients.
