Determine how Five Guys philosophy sets it apart from other fast-food chains.
In 1986 Five Guys started out as a little family burger operation with five locations and a steady following in Northern VA. Today, there are 570 stores across the U.S. and Canada with sales of $483 million. All Family members remain actively involved, in spite of company growth.
One reason that Five Guys are different from any fast-food chain is because they have a philosophy of maintaining the basics, in which they still shadowing currently. For more than two decades, Five Guys has not changed their menu, despite of pressures from other franchises. Five guys believe in keeping it simple, even with their visual images upon entering their establishment. They have a nostalgic setting from a 1950’s diner, and a military canteen, which keeps décor to a mimuim. They have a quality selection of buns in which the supplier is local. They offer ingredients such as sautéed mushrooms, jalapeno peppers and grilled onions. And while the customers are patiently waiting for a great burger, Five Guys offer an unshelled peanut, which has become their famous trademark. Five guys being a fast-food restaurant does what other restaurants offer. They send secret shoppers twice a week to every location, and the family is traveling constantly, visiting every store. By sticking to the basics, five Guys leaves their food print embedded in what others have strayed away from, keeping it simple.
Analyze the original values for the start-up company and how it remains strong today.
Five Guys believe in basic values and remaining basic helps a person travel along way. We figured our best salesman is our customer. Treat that person right, he’ll walk out the door and sell for you. (Income.com, 2010). Five guys believe that word of mouth is the best advertising, and most companies find this to be accurate. Five guys belief is the way they select their potatoes. Their potatoes are from Idaho in which eight percent of the Idaho baking crop. Five guys get their potatoes grown north of the Forty-Second parallel, which is a pain in the neck (Inc.com, 2010). With their vast selection, but not very cost effective, this assures that the customer is getting a quality potato at the company’s expense. By using different methods in storing their food, Five Guys have mastered a technique in preparing quality fries. Even though Five Guys is now a franchise, they still follow the same pattern since 1986m which remains in existence today. Routine seems to be a factor from which five Guys started from day one.
Enumerate three (3) factors that contributed to Five Guys success in such a short time and what effect, if any, external markets had on these factors.
Jerry Murrell studies Economics at University of Michigan. Short on finances, and homeless, Murrell ran a fraternity house kitchen, where he got the cook a raise and let her do the ordering. This made them a lucrative income, because the cook knew what she was doing (Inc.com, 2010). Sticking to a basic concept is Five Guys motto. Five Guys incorporated a rule of thumb in how they prepare their food; to how they treat their customers, and the restaurant theme and advertisement. Five Guys rather place all their efforts in the food, and pleasing the customer, instead on guys in fancy outfits.
Five Guys believe on Merit, even if it is offensive to the customer. They have a saying for impatient customers, “If you are in a hurry, there are a lot of really good hamburger places within a short distance from here” (Inc.com, 2010). In doing so, Five Guys are able to make a bold statement, slightly offend the customer, and retain them simontainsely. This is a great a concept for a business to have, if they can back their statement with a quality product.
What make sense to Jerry Murrell is that anyone can make money in the food business as long as you have a good product, reasonable price, and a clean place. (Inc.com, 2010). Murrell built his business into a successful one, by believing in a concept so minute, it has paid off handsomely, and still doing so.
I believe that Murrell has had external factors, which played a part in his success. Five Guys has major competitors in this business, but they have overcome many obstacles. Careful planning, strong beliefs, and taking simple concepts and turning them into what works for Murrell, plays an important factor in his success.
Assess how ethical and social practices are a part of Five Guys’ culture and provide examples to support your choices.
Ethical practice is to honor the beliefs, moral and values of your profession and help others through the process of unbiased decision making. Murrell believes in this system because Murrell was able to obtain some basic knowledge, and mastered it into his own business. Murrell has a firm belief in operating his business from other franchise competitors, because Murrell and his family operate the business from an old aspect. Murrell believes that if you want to great quality burger, you will have to wait patiently, or obtain a great burger elsewhere. This is a bold statement, which can be taken as an insult, but Murrell harnesses this, and uses it to his advantage. Social practices are implemented as well in Five Guys daily operation, and are labeled as Habit. Under habit, social practice becomes a form of ritual, where the individual is integrated into his environment by repeating the same gesture and motions. Murrell has mastered repetition. He stands firmly on advertising, because the customers are the salesperson. Murrell is a firm believer that basic is best, and he has proven that with each store set up, the way that the family works together as a team to operate as successful business and staying in his own lane when it comes to completion.
As a supervisor and Christian, I will typically be in charge of making numerous decisions that affect both me, the organization I work for and the people I supervise. Striving to maintain ethical and moral decision-making skills is vital. All decisions need to be weighed, particularly when it comes to promotions and instructions for employees. All decisions must be fair and personal preference should never enter into the decision-making process.
Five Guys was founded in 1986 by Jerry and Janie Murrell and their sons, all five of whom are part of the business. In 1986-2001 Five Guys opens five locations around the DC metro-area and perfected their business of making burgers. Now, over 20 years after Five Guys first opened, there are over 1,000 locations nationwide and over 1500 units in development. Five guys continue to receive media attention and have grown a cult-like following around the world (www.fiveguys.com). In this assignment, the following questions will be answered as to how Five Guys continues to be a success and why customers continue to flock to their restaurant:

Fives Guys’ philosophy that sets them apart from every other fast food restaurant is due to Jerry Mitchell’s establishment focuses on the quality of the product and customer satisfaction to both internal and external customer. In his own word’s Jerry Murrell says "Treat the person right, he’ll walk out the door and sell for you”, which basically means the reason that they are a success is due to the way they treat their customers which in turns brings in more customers on the basis of “word of mouth”.
The Five Guys philosophy that if you're going to sell hamburgers and french fries in a restaurant industry that is crowded with hamburger-french-fries chains, you'd better do hamburgers and french fries better than anyone else. In these economic times of do more with less the owners of the Five Guys restaurant chain have obtained great success by keeping it simple. This simplicity was and still is guided by the operating principles of the company’s philosophy that if you're going to sell hamburgers and french fries in a restaurant industry that is crowded with hamburger-french-fries chains, you'd better do hamburgers and french fries better than anyone else. It is this brought them the success that they have attained.

5 concepts/ways of doing business that have proven to be successful for this company is the founding actions that are the foundation of the company’s philosophy.

-Best salesman is the customer. Spend money on the quality of the product and not the décor.
