The movies, ‘Invictus’ and ‘Temple Grandin,’ are based upon the true stories about Nelson Mandela and Temple Grandin. Invictus tells about Mandela’s belief that the sport of rugby would help in uniting his country, South Africa, during his presidency. Temple Grandin, on the other hand, tells about Temple’s life with Autism, overcoming many obstacles, and becoming an expert in animal husbandry. Both movies tell about an actual person and the obstacles and decisions they had to make, either for themselves or in Mandela’s case, for their country. Invictus was a good movie, but Temple Grandin held the attention of the audience, was very descriptive and was a very inspiring movie. Temple Grandin, the main character, we learn has a disorder called …show more content…
In Invictus, Mandela, having just become president of South Africa and being freed from prison after many years, needed a way to unite his country since they were still dealing with the struggles of apartheid. He decided to use rugby as a way to unite since many South Africans loved the sport and knew that it was a way that could possibly bring two different worlds together. One saw in the film how he had to deal with white people being afraid of him firing them and also how at one of the games, one of the spectators threw something at the President but he continued to smile and wave like he saw nothing. Temple, meanwhile, had Autism. Her mother was told at a young age that she should be institutionalized but her mother decided against that option. Instead, because of her mom’s insistence on Temple being a normal kid, she enrolled her in school. Temple had a hard time adjusting but during a trip to her aunt’s ranch she found a way of calming herself down without any help threw a “silent box.” This box was designed by Temple after seeing cows calming down once input into their own ‘box.’ Temple worked very hard and eventually graduated college. She surpassed many expectations since at that time, many seen her as someone that could not do what a ‘normal’ person could. Temple showed that even though one may have a disease or disorder that does not mean that one cannot achieve the
