A genetically modified organism, or GMO, is any organism that has had its DNA modified in some way through genetic engineering techniques. About eighty-five percent of the time, GMOs have been altered with DNA from another organism, for example; bacterium, plant, virus or animal. This harmful organism is not healthy for people even though we eat them every day. Many people claim that GMOs are not bad for you because they are in almost everything we eat. However, if someone is allergic to something and it is in the food that person is eating and they do not know it, then it could harm them even worse.
It is very apparent that there are two very different viewpoints when it comes to the health and safety of genetically modified food, industry

...can make it impossible to completely clean up a corrupted gene pool. This website suggests that GMOs should be avoided because they are unhealthy, contaminate forever, increase herbicide use and create dangerous side effects. The author of this article does imply that their arguments are scientific. They provide a few statistical facts that support their claims such as “after GMOs were introduced in 1996, the percentage of Americans with three or more chronic illnesses jumped from 7% to 13% in just 9 years.” Although this statement does support the claim, it does not completely prove that genetically modified organisms are the cause. Most of the statements in this article are just purely statements and not facts. Their points are relevant to the issue of genetically modified organisms but they do not provide how they came...

...I support that GMOs are good and safe for you to eat. GMOs are safe to eat, they just have things that make them last longer. What is so bad about GMOs if they have things in them to make them taste better or last longer? “It is also said that these foods grow faster than the foods that are grown in the traditional manner. Due to this, productivity increases, providing the population with more food.” The GMOs can give more food so why do people hate them? And, all of the stuff that is in there isn't harmful to humans. I still don't see what is so bad about GMOs. GMOs can grow in places that the non modified crops can't grow like in a desert. “At times, genetically engineered food crops can be grown at places with unfavorable climatic...

...For those of you who don’t already know what gmos are, they are modified organisms whose genetic material has been altered to contain segments of DNA from different organisms. Of the organisms that are being altered these include crops, plants and even animals. The reason behind editing their genes are for beneficial reasons to either the consumer or producer. Some of these including either improved protection against insects, how long it takes for the product to spoil, how fast it can mature and they can also improve the taste of the organism being modified. The most common Gmo foods are Soy, Corn, Cotton, and canola. There are many positive and negative effects of GMOs but I think people should have the knowledge to decide for themselves whether...

...food for this ever growing world?” This complex and global question can be answered in three words, genetically modified organisms. Also known as GMOs, such organisms have the power to positively influence society in many ways. Genetically engineered crops have a positive effect on society because they are safe to consume, they benefit the economy, and they give farmers the ability to produce more with less land. Biology researchers define GMOs as “an organism...

Gmos Harmful Research Paper

...Are GMOs harmful? Over the last week I have learned about genetic engineering in my 7th grade science class. A genetic disease is a disease that can’t be cured. Scientists are trying to find a way that a genetic disease like Familial Hypercholesterolemia can be cured. Next are designer babies, which is the parents can pick traits that they want to put in their kids. Have you heard about GMOs, which stand for Genetically modified organisms? If you haven’t, they are used to modify food. More than 60 countries around the world which including Japan, Australia, and all of the countries in the European Union produce GMOs. Farmers produce GMOs because they cost less to make and the farmers can sell GMOs for more money. Therefore I support...

Transgenic Crops Summary

...Transgenic Crops Summary Technology has been a big part of our lives, and as it increases, new innovations are introduced. Agricultural innovation plays a key role in agricultural productivity. One such agricultural innovation, transgenic crops--otherwise known as genetically modified crops--is one of the most important issues in today’s society, raising a concern of whether the innovation is good or bad. Vern Grubinger, author of the article “Concerns about Transgenic Crops,” affirms that transgenic crops are created when genes are artificially inserted into a plant from another species, instead of the plant acquiring them by itself. According to the article “The Good, Bad, and Ugly about GMOs” written by Quinn Wendland, there are many positive and negative aspects regarding the production of transgenic crops. Wendland discusses some of the positive aspects of transgenic crops, which include a decrease in pesticide and herbicide use, a rapid increase in crop productivity to reduce world hunger, improvements in the nutritive value of crops to combat malnutrition, inexpensive production of medicine, and a reduction in the use of fossil fuel. However, production of transgenic crops comes with many possible risks. Genetically engineered genes introduced into wild plants could reduce biodiversity and create super-weeds (Grubinger 1). Transgenic crops can interfere with the natural environment. Contamination of organic farms and food can occur. In the article “Can a Growing World...

Arguments Against Gmo

...modified organism, or GMO, is an organism that has had its DNA altered or modified in some way through genetic engineering (Livescience). Genetically modified foods are becoming more and more popular around the world. There has been a big argument for years on whether genetically modified foods are safe to eat. Recently, the FDA approved farm Genetically modified salmon as a certified meal. This makes it the first genetically modified animal to be approved for consumption. It has been a long time coming, but after being accused of delaying the decision for years they finally said that you can safely eat the salmon. The inserted genes remained stable in the salmon over several generations. The decision might quiet down a debate...

Why Is Gmo Dangerous To The Environment

...Many farmers and crops suffer from diseases and other natural disasters it is clever idea that GMO is created. To help farmers and their crops Gmo is good because it helps the crops and we will be able to have something to eat. May people argue that Gmo is bad for are health and that it causes a danger too the environment. Many say that it cost farmers too much money famers spend up too 100 million dollars trying to get theses tomatoes from being infected (geneticliteracyproject.org). GMO is not safe too humans because it can cause health problems, and so many other diseases Copper pesticides are popular on organic fruits and helps them too fight off bacteria, fungi, weed, snails. it also shows that it is harmful to the soil that they are planting the fruit in. (geneticliteracyproject.org). These pesticides can be harmful to humans at high doses. Copper pesticides use a lot of water and it is bad because we need that water too wash clothes, be able to drink water, and be able to do so many other things. famers had said that “we really are talking about reducing the use water and having less pesticides being sprayed (geneticliteracyproject.org)....

Organic Foods: All You Need To Know

...You Need to Know,” I would like to begin by stating that the topic of organic foods versus GMOs is still very controversial. It is a widely known, ongoing debate, but most do not even know all of the information about the two sides. To recap the general information, I will start with some facts. Organic foods are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, bioengineered genes, petroleum-based fertilizers, or sewage sludge-based fertilizers while GMOs are engineered to make food crops resistant to herbicides and/or to produce an insecticide. For example, most of the sweet corn produced in the U.S. is genetically engineered to be resistant to the herbicide...

Applying Problem Solving

...is, how can we solve them? The answer is, soft skills such as critical thinking and problem solving. These are arguably the most effective weapons we have against combatting these problems. Let’s explore two examples of real-world scenarios: Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and Gun Violence. A recent study confirmed a direct link between tumors and Genetically Modified Organisms (Food Chem Toxicol, 2012). The scientific method was used to observe, hypothesize, experiment, and verify this conclusion, via a controlled experiment with rats over the course of two years. That’s not to say that all tumors are caused solely by GMOs, but rather that at least one of the causes for tumors have been identified. As a result of this study, many countries have banned the importing, development, and sales of GMOs, including (but not limited to) Italy, Switzerland, and New Zealand (for confirmation, search “GMO Ban” from the University of Phoenix Library). The scientific method has also been used to study the toxicity of chem trails in the air, fluoride in the water, and preservatives in food products. So why has President Obama signed into law the Monsanto Protection Act, which protects Monsanto (a large American GMO company) from federal courts? With so much evidence, one must wonder why the government is turning a blind eye (or even worse, “protecting”) these companies, at the expense of our health. Many speculate that the motive for this corruption is money, such as corporate bribery...

Facts on Gmos

...Over the years we have seen a steady rise in the production of genetically modified foods. This has caused a swelling of opinions from people on the GMOs. There are advantages and concerns about this process of enhancing food. Controversy about the thought of modifying food has spread worldwide. People are wary about the idea because they want to know exactly what is in the food that they are eating and because we are swaying away from naturally growing crops. However growing these modified crops could possibly put an end to some of the world’s challenges, such as food security for families. A GMO or genetically modified organism is a crop that is made for consumption by humans and animals. These crops are made in a laboratory by using the latest molecular biology techniques. The reason for making genetically modified plants and organisms is to enhance desired traits. This way is much easier and quicker than the alternative, breeding, which is not always accurate. Some traits that scientists want these plants to have are better resistance to herbicides, increase in nutritional value, and being able to stay ripe longer. Some of the most common modified plants are corn, soybeans, canola, rice, and cotton seed oil. Since the approval to sell genetically modified foods they have become significantly more available. The approval of GMOs has affected us in ways that we might not even know about. Some foods that we eat may in fact contain some of these genetically modified crops such...

Genetically Modified Organisms

...GMO-Pro Essay Have you ever wanted the most delicious and juicy fruit without any seeds in it? That can happen with GMOs.Genetically Modified Organisms(GMO), have many advantages and disadvantages, but this is all about the advantages of GMOs. GMOs are done through genetic engineering. Genetic Engineering can produce medicines and improve food crops. GMOs are also useful because Genetic Engineered bacteria produce a protein that is very useful to people with diabetes. This also lets you choose what kind of traits your offspring will have. Genetic Engineering also lets people insert human genes into animals. One type of Genetically Modified Organism, Genetically Engineered bacteria, produces a protein called insulin. Many people with diabetes use injections that contain insulin to help them stay alive. Insulin is made when a gene is inserted into the plasmid. Then the offspring and the bacterial cell will contain the human gene. The bacteria produce the protein that the human gene codes for insulin. The bacteria produce very quickly, that the insulin is produced in a very short time. Also, gene therapy is done by Genetic Engineering, which is a part of GMOs. Someday Gene Therapy might use genetic engineering to correct some genetic...
