Earth, the beautiful and life sustainable planet humans have called their home is able to endure the innovation, modifications and destruction performed by the planets human inhabitants for thousands of years. Humanity has and continues reform this planet for greater good; this greater good is not always this best and rewarding option because the consequences overturn the predicted good. Ursula K. Le Guin’s The Lathe of Heaven explores of the life of the humans in near future that live in and face the consequences of their race and struggle to survive due to the failing Earth and unreliable humans. Due to the technological advancements and disregards to growing issues, humans are left to renew the planet with the reaming resources they have. An issue presented in the novel is the growing population and the ability of the world leaders to deal with the stress of limited resources and the welfare of the entire population. Dr. Haber elaborates, “Overpopulation… in the eighteenth century Malthus was pressing the panic button about population growth… And sure enough population has gone up… It’s just not as bad as they said it would be. We all get by just fine here in America” (Le Guin, 59)…The true state of population is expressed here as Dr. Haber explains how the standards of life have decreased because of overpopulation. Despite the warning from past generations, humans have not learned to properly control population grown and suffer with the consequences. These consequences can be seen in America through the housing complexes built with smaller units to compensate with the demand for cheap and sufficient homes and the creation of desert cities to produce more food for civilians.
