Syracuse, a medium-sized city with about 1.45 million inhabitants, has been ranked the fourth in the top 10 American cities to raise a family in 2010 . Located in Central New York, it is an economic and educational hub of this region, providing comfortable living and good education for local people as well as international students from all over the world. When it comes to see how it wins the title of top 10 city to raise a family, the following factors may be taken in to consideration: geography, safety, economy, public infrastructure and so on.

Geographically, Syracuse stands at the northeast corner of the Finger Lakes Region and situated in high latitude, providing snow lovers heavy white snow, beautiful snow-covered landscapes and a long cold winter, with a record low Celsius degree of minus 32 . The snow is what Syracuse famous for, which can also be enjoyable if you can go through the snowstorm and blizzard.

As for safety, unluckily the crime rate in Syracuse is considerably higher than the national average across all communities in America . The good side is there are only a few areas considered unsafe and it is said that as long as you avoid walking alone in those areas during midnight, you will not get into trouble.

Speaking of economy, although it has faced with challenges over past few decades, life is still enjoyable for most local people. In Syracuse, we have the fantastic Destiny USA shopping mall, annual Great New York State Fair and many other active business districts. Price level is fair so that cost of living in Syracuse is relatively low. Houses and vehicles are affordable for those with a stable job and income.

What I like most is Syracuse is a perfect mix of city and rural. Ever since I arrive there, I appreciate the sunshine and blue sky, green fields and numerous parks, and clean air everyday. And I can take the convenient Centro bus to look around the city.

All in all, if you get accustomed to the cold weather in winter avoid unsafe areas and find a decent job after graduation, Syracuse could be one of the best cities to live.

Smart Growth

...has and will benefit the people and the city that they live in. It will also include a description on one of the city projects that used this program and the success of it. Then I will be discussing how it would benefit in my home town by using this program. Smart growth has many different meanings to all different people. When I think of smart growth and what it can do, I think of it as helping people, community, economy, and the environment. As it is stated in our text, “These programs encourage governments and private developers to build a range of housing types, create walkable neighborhoods, mix land uses, preserve open space, provide a variety of transportation options, and direct support toward existing communities rather than continuing city sprawl.” (Getis pg-380). The city project I choose to discuss in this paper is, “Abyssinian Neighborhood Project Harlem Community Revitalization” in Manhattan, New York. (http://www.smartgrowth.org/action/). What they did in Harlem and other areas was a great thing, by building additional homes that were affordable for people who could not afford much and to develop an environment that was convenient and save. This was a step up and a good start for the people in Harlem. This addition helped renew the neighborhoods and helped improve the environment by cleaning the area from the streets to the buildings that were left behind to nothing. They also developed green places for people to live, work, and shops and also developed different...

Onondaga Nation Research Paper

...Can the Onondaga Nation Find Peace? I was born in Syracuse, NY and lived in the area for just over 30 years. The Onondaga people have a reservation in Nedrow, NY, just outside of Syracuse. In this close quarters, the Onondaga Nation was concurrently present while wholly unacknowledged in my own limited purview. Upon further reflection, I can vaguely recall school field trips that must have been taken there. More clearly I can recall friends whose family had connections inside the reservation and whom I would accompany there. None of this really resonated with me as being anything outside of the ordinary, nothing more shocking than having friends or family in the next city over. My perceptions were certainly jarred then one day when, of all...

Plato

...Plato was born around the year 428 BCE in Athens. His father died while Plato was young, and his mother remarried to Pyrilampes, in whose house Plato would grow up. Plato's birth name was Aristocles, and he gained the nickname Platon, meaning broad, because of his broad build. His family had a history in politics, and Plato was destined to a life in keeping with this history. He studied at a gymnasium owned by Dionysios, and at the palaistra of Ariston of Argos. When he was young he studied music and poetry. According to Aristotle, Plato developed the foundations of his metaphysics and epistemology by studying the doctrines of Cratylus, and the work of Pythagoras and Parmenides. When Plato met Socrates, however, he had met his definitive teacher. As Socrates' disciple, Plato adopted his philosophy and style of debate, and directed his studies toward the question of virtue and the formation of a noble character. Plato was in military service from 409 BC to 404 BC. When the Peloponnesian War ended in 404 BC he joined the Athenian oligarchy of the Thirty Tyrants, one of whose leaders was his uncle Charmides. The violence of this group quickly prompted Plato to leave it. In 403 BC, when democracy was restored in Athens, he had hopes of pursuing his original goal of a political career. Socrates' execution in 399 BC had a profound effect on Plato, and was perhaps the final event that would convince him to leave Athenian politics forever. Plato left Attica along with other friends...

...Wilderness Road, in 1795, opened to wagon travelers. The Wilderness Road made travel through the Cumberland Gap much easier for the travelers. Also, there was the creation of turnpikes, and by 1821, over four thousand miles of turnpikes had been established. There was also a boost in water transportation with the advances of the steamboat, flatboats, and canal barges. These uses of water transportations eased the movement of people and lowered the cost of traveled goods on water. In 1836, 361 steamboats were traveling the rivers in the West. The boats traveled two ways, creating a transcontinental trade of goods. The Erie Canal was one of the most essential events for the creation of the national economy. It opened in 1825, and it pulled much of the western trade to the east. The Erie Canal encompassed 363 miles of water from Albany to Buffalo. It led to the creation and flourishing of smaller towns, such as Syracuse, Rochester, and Cleveland. It shortened the time needed to travel from New York City and Buffalo and dropped the cost of traveling of...

Globalization

...this is a major thing in all communities. From a community viewpoint the definition of globalization is the intensification of worldwide social relations which link distant localities in such a way that local happenings are shaped by events occurring many miles away and vice versa. Globalization has shaped my community both positively and negatively. In this era, there is no state that has benefited more or suffered less than New York. The impact of globalization has forever changed the way we do business. Most of the area has turned globalization into an asset, but there is a few regions that has suffered unfortunately. The benefits of globalization have been limited and sporadic in Binghamton, Buffalo (which is where I am from), Syracuse and Utica – Rome metropolitan areas, where traditional manufacturing accounted for an extraordinarily high share of all private sector jobs. New York is the country’s third largest dairy producer, second largest apple grower and a major producer of wine. Let me tell you, this...

Child Labor

...During the late 1800s and the early 1900s, child labor became popular and very common to the public.  Even though it was common, only a few people knew the details of the punishment and pain children were put through to get a small amount of money to support their families.  Children weren’t able to get an education and were forced to work at as young four. Many got diseases and sicknesses that affected them for the rest of their lives. Unfortunately, many people listened to their heads and not their hearts.  Many felt that child labor was wrong, but not very many fought to end it.  The dangerous conditions and long hours negatively affected the children that lived it. Without the advocates tirelessly working to stop child labor thousands of children would have lost their lives.          As the nation’s economy was expanding, many more factories were being built. As industries grew, the demand for workers also increased.  Mill owners hired mainly women and children because they could pay them half the salary they would have to pay men.  Children were also hired because of their size. Since they were normally smaller, it was easy for them to go inside and fix the machines or to change spindles.  Soon, many businesses were using children as part of their regular work force.  Since children could be hired cheaply and were too young to complain, they were often employed to replace adult workers.  In industries where large numbers of children were employed, their low wages pulled...

Similarities Between Alexander The Great And The Hellenistic Age

...The Hellenistic kingdoms faced not just internal conflict but faced them from external enemies as well. Because of the conflicts the Hellenistic kingdoms began to weaken themselves and eventually created a void for competing kingdoms like Pontus or Bactria. During this time, Rome had risen to become a great power by 200 BC who’s reach was expanding and growing in political strength in Italy, the Carthaginian, and dominance in the Mediterranean in the three Punic Wars. Because the Hellenistic age was a time of lavish display of riches, the kingdoms were also under constant attack, and due to its size made it difficult to secure and defend at all times. This left villages and smaller cities that were outside of the metropolitan areas vulnerable to constant raids and attacks from bandits and pirates. For example, Gauls, a Celtic people, invaded Macedonia and reached as far as southern Greece in 279 BC in an endeavor to loot the treasures of Delphi. In the end, large portions of the Hellenistic kingdoms began to succumb to the constant waves of invasions by neighboring tribes. Many parts would later be freely surrendered to the new rising power of Rome. In 31 BC Octavian and later Augustus would defeat the rulers of Egypt Anthony and Cleopatra in the famous naval battle of Actium which then signified...

Benefits of a Healthy Tree Canopy

...Tree Canopy for Baltimore City By: Matt Heilman April 24, 2013 The city of Baltimore would face both costs and benefits in achieving a healthy tree canopy. However, the benefits would far outweigh the costs that are associated in achieving this goal. The city of Baltimore would benefit greatly from a more significant investment in improving the tree canopy. Trees are one of the few elements of our infrastructure that increase in value over time. Trees remove air pollutants, alter microclimates, and reduce air temperature. Tree also absorb and filter water, cool our homes and business and increase property value. They are known to reduce stress, aggression and asthma rates and increase the livability and vitality of our neighborhoods and businesses. A tree canopy is the percent of a city’s land area that has tree cover (MDNR. 2008). Many cities in the U.S., including Baltimore have seen a major reduction in tree and forest cover over the past several decades (U.S. Forest Services). In 2003 the Chesapeake Bay Executive Council Directive 03-01 recognized that “urban tree canopy cover offers water quality benefits for municipalities” (TreeBaltimore). American Forests, a pioneer in the science of urban forestry, determined that the healthiest cities have a 40% tree canopy (TreeBaltimore). This encouraged communities to adopt urban tree canopy goals. Working with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Forest Services, Baltimore City was the first jurisdiction...
