College Essay

...The most influential person in my life has often stated that “taking risks and overcoming obstacles promotes important discoveries in your life and work.” The most important experience in my life sought me out. It happened to me; I didn’t cause it. However, I am so grateful for that experience because it has changed me in a magnificent way. I have discovered many things about myself as well as others that have benefited my maturity. As I sat at the dining room table one Tuesday night awaiting dinner, I felt as though my world was starting to crash down around me. School, work, friends, and just life in general were stressing me out, not to mention thoughts of the future. I was suddenly faced with the most devastating news of my life; or so I thought. My mother has always been my most adamant supporter but as she sat there, telling me that I would have to pay for my college tuition, I couldn’t help but feel nothing less of hatred for her. The lack of my parents’ financial support has motivated me to prove that I can and will achieve my dreams. As a result of this experience, I am currently in school while holding two jobs at the same time which takes a great deal of responsibility and a considerable amount of time. Working two jobs and staying in school is not exactly what I call fun. However, it is worth the trouble knowing that I get a lesson about responsibility out of it. All this hard work has taught me how to be responsible. I can use this example now and put it into use...

An Influential Perso

...An Influential Person Maneashia Lane English 121 Adam Deutsch February 09, 2015 Introduction Today I would like to introduce you to the most influential person in my life. Her name is Carla Simmons. She is my 41 year sister from Talladega, Al. According to her, growing up she never had a plan or a blueprint for her life. As a result, she never completed anything she started. Consequently, she accomplished her goals later in life. In 2005 she received her Real Estate license. It was a struggle because she was a single mother of two and worked a full-time job. She worked from 6 A.M-4:30 P.M. She went straight to class after work and didn’t get home until 11 PM. She was tired but she was persistent. In 2014, she received a Bachelor degree in Organizational Management from Historical Talladega College. She is now pursuing an MBA in Organizational Management. She knows when to be serious and when to have fun. She surrounds herself with positive people, makes time for herself, does things she enjoys doing, and she constantly thinks about being successful. She is an optimist at heart and she has a very positive outlook on life. First of all, she taught me how to surround myself with positive people because negative people gripe and complain, and have nothing good to say. And no matter how one tries to convince them, they cannot and will not accept that way of thinking. Keeping a positive attitude can be difficult if your audience is negative people, and they are constantly...

...Measuring Speed Introduction: Speed is defined as the rate of change of position or the rate of motion. A rate is the ratio between two different quantities. Motion is described with respect to, or relative to, another object called a reference point or frame of reference. Usually the Earth is considered to be stationary and is often the frame of reference. Speed is a relative quantity that depends upon the frame of reference -- how an object is observed and measured. Average speed is total distance traveled divided by the total time traveled. average speed = total distance or speed = d where d is distance and t is time total time traveled t Another way to measure speed is called instantaneous speed. This type is one of the most common ways we measure speed. Instantaneous speed is the measurement of speed at a particular instant. Without the use of a measuring device called a speedometer, instantaneous speed is almost impossible to measure. When both speed and direction are specified for the motion the term velocity is used. In other words, velocity is speed in a particular direction. A person walking eastward at 1 km/h does not have the same velocity as a person walking northward at 1 km/h, even though their speeds are the same. Two persons also have different velocities if they walk in the same direction at different speeds or if they are turning. Calculating Speed Activity PROCEDURE Part A: Mark off your walking distance...

..."How much could I lose in a really bad month?" Now let's get specific. A VAR statistic has three components: a time period, a confidence level and a loss amount (or loss percentage). Keep these three parts in mind as we give some examples of variations of the question that VAR answers. You can see how the "VAR question" has three elements: a relatively high level of confidence (typically either 95% or 99%), a time period (a day, a month or a year) and an estimate of investment loss (expressed either in dollar or percentage terms). Methods of Calculating VAR Institutional investors use VAR to evaluate portfolio risk, but in this introduction we will use it to evaluate the risk of a single index that trades like a stock: the Nasdaq 100 Index, which trades under the ticker QQQQ. The QQQQ is a very popular index of the largest non-financial stocks that trade on the Nasdaq exchange. There are three methods of calculating VAR: the historical method, the variance-covariance method and the Monte Carlo...

How I Became Literate

...Opening a book creates a whole new world of exploration of the imagination. Every turn of the sharp crisp pages leads to a new discovery, an intriguing sense of the mind to where you will never be capable of putting a book down for even a second. As a child there are countless memories I can recollect of learning to read and experiencing that same exact feeling. Many people have been influential in the process of my own literary advancement over the years. Only a few of those people stick out very vividly in my mind, Mrs.Kathy, Mrs.Shannon, and my grandfather Odom. Mrs.Kathy was one of the first individuals to introduce me to reading and it all started with bedtime stories. I can remember crawling into the tall hickory wood sleigh bed in the guest room and bundling up with every stitch of blanket underneath the reading lamp. The eagerness that set in my brain could not wait for Mrs.Kathy to turn the first page and dive into a world of imagination. As she sat down on the edge of the bed she would start reading excerpts out of an old story book. While she was reading I would read along in my mind until I could only hear a faint whisper of her voice following silence as I drifted into a light sleep. Afterwards, I would hear the lamp switch make a clicking sound and the door creak as it came to a shut. Laying there in silence for a few minutes I would roll over, turn the lamp on, pick the old story book back up and read page after page until my hearts content. It was in those moments...

Our Relationship with Others Help Us to Define Who We Are

...Context Prompt: Our relationships with others help us to define who we are. Our identity is what we perceive ourselves to be as well as how others view us. One’s identity is therefore an essential element in defining themselves. For that reason, it is especially important that we are comfortable with our identity. As individuals, people have unique characteristics and personalities as well as belonging to groups that influence such factors as their lives go on. Although great emphasis is put on creating ones identity alone, a number of factors such as ones appearance, society, environment, religion and race can shape our identities thus help us to define who we are. It is also believed that our genetic makeup has a large role in determining who we are. Our identity can be considerably shaped by our appearance. Physical appearance is the first, and often most important, and most lasting impression others get of us. Society will create different assumptions about others based on simple factors such as ones fashion and ones physical qualities. As a result, many will adjust their identities to be accepted by society. For example, people tailoring their personal appearance to fit what they want others to see them as. An individual who dresses very formally is likely to want others to view them as high class or wealthy. Although, factors such as height and skin colour cannot be so easily altered and depends on ones genetics. The effects of appearance on our identity can be...

Hum/100

...Ancient Cultures: Love HUM/100 Ancient Cultures: Love My love, I have tried with all my being to grasp a form comparable to thine own, but nothing seems worthy; I know now why Shakespeare could not compare his love to a summer’s day. It would be a crime to denounce the beauty of such a creature as thee, to simply cast away the precision God had placed in forging you. Each facet of your being whether it physical or spiritual is an ensnarement from which there is no release. But I do not wish release. I wish to stay entrapped forever. With you for all eternity, our hearts, always as one (Kolos, 2012). This is the image of love often and initially conjured when we talk about love. However, the word “love” can have a variety of related but distinct meaning in different contexts and cultures. We will look the definition of love and do a brief assessment of how ancient Greek and Romans viewed or definition of interpersonal love in their culture. We will compare their view to our modern day view/definition of interpersonal love. First let us look at our definition of love according to dictionary.com (2012). “Love is a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person. A feeling of warm personal attachment or deep affection, as for parent, child, or friend. Sexual passion or desire. A person toward whom love is felt; beloved person; sweetheart.” There were many more definitions addressed representing all of human kindness, compassion, and affections...

...David L. Moore Strayer University Business 100 Dr. Amanda Manners November 12, 2013 Effective communication in the work place is essential for a successful work place environment. I have been in numerous work places where the communication was poor and I have been in work place environments where the communication flowed and we were very successful in getting the job done. Understanding each other and what each other bring to the table, brings a level of respect amongst the employees in the work environment. There was one time when I was stationed in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri my new job was going to be a instructor, teaching new soldiers the job of Combat Engineer. My part of that process was teaching them demolition training in which we teach them inert training and when they passed that, they were allowed to go outside to the demolition range and blow up C-4 and dynamite. Effective communication between myself and other instructors was paramount as we had to weed out soldiers that needed more training and wasn’t yet ready to use the real stuff. We had to continuously confer with each other every hour sometimes every thirty minutes to make sure that we were on the same page reference to the soldiers. Being that demolitions have no one’s name on it, we had to ensure from a safety standpoint to leave certain soldiers in the classroom to continue training on inert demolitions. To be absolutely effective in what we did as instructors, we placed a high commitment on communication...

$100 Laptop

...Case Analysis of Marketing the “$100 Laptop” The idea of One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) was brought by Nicholas Negroponte, co-founder and director of the MIT Media Laboratory. Nicholas Negroponte created and developed a stir --“$100 Laptop”—in the personal computer industry. OLPC aims “to provide each child with a rugged, low-cost, low-power, connected laptop” (www.one.laptop.org) Nicholas Negroponte has a vision to launch the education movement that would help alleviate poverty by connecting children in developing countries to the rest of the world. Therefore, he described OLPC “is an education project, not a laptop project” (Quelch, 2008). Problems facing by OLPC OLPC offers a laptop which is low power requirement, preventing water or sand or dirt damage, open source software, unique interface, and possibility for solar power and hand-crank powering lost cost (Quelch, 2008). These terms for an innovative, unique laptop seem bound for success (Davison, 2008). The $100 laptop should be experiencing growth in developing countries. However, some developing countries are reluctant to develop OLPC laptop, and some have cancelled planned purchases (Kraemer, Dedrick & Sharma, 2009). Meanwhile, the OLPC organization (www. olpc.com) struggles with key staff defections, budget cuts, mission disillusionment, high cost of OLPC laptop, difficult to sell to developing countries and unexpected aggressive competitors’ threats. These obstacles faced by OLPC indicate OLPC might not provide a...
