Abstract

...Abstract Asia-Pacific countries have experienced a rapid rise in Internet usage in recent history. China, in particular, has seen 40% of its population (or 500M people) connect to the Internet in the past 10 years, and continues to experience an increase in its user base. This large user base, coupled with a rise in wealthy households and per capita spending, is driving a dramatic increase in e-Commerce retail, specifically in the luxury goods space. Consumption of luxury goods in China has reached $9.4B in 2010, second only to Japan in the world. As luxury purchase rates continue to increase in China, luxury fashion brands are investing many resources to understand the customer, develop the market, establish the supply chain, and deliver the products. Polo Ralph Lauren (PRL), in order to continue its growth in China, is expanding aggressively through license reacquisitions and retail store developments. Furthermore, to provide its existing customers with additional products and enhanced services, and to capture consumers who live in cities without access to PRL's brick and mortar stores, PRL has set its vision to develop an e- Commerce business in China. This thesis provides a fundamental understanding of PRL's current business operations and of current e-Commerce fulfillment models for luxury apparel brands in China. An assessment of gaps was also conducted between current fulfillment operations of PRL and those of other luxury brands and 3PLs operating in China, specifically...

...Abstract: | Knowledge management is identified as a key success factor in most industries today. While data or information can be stored independently from people, knowledge is bound to people who use it for their interactions. The main goal of knowledge management is to improve the usage of knowledge in the enterprise. Knowledge management systems are not only organizational memory information systems. They also contain organizational standard procedures and a certain cultural attitude. A reference framework gives implementation hints mainly influenced by technical possibilities. The knowledge management system reference architecture contains layers of sources, repositories, taxonomy, services, applications and user interfaces. A software tool that largely corresponds to this reference framework is the Knowledge Café. Possible applications of this tool to the area of hospitality and tourism are described in this paper. | Information technology has changed how businesses operate and succeed in today’s global economy. Organizations can now use IT to transform themselves and achieve a tremendous competitive advantage. Information Technology for Management: Transforming Organizations in the Digital Economy, Seventh Edition highlights how this new technology is changing the current business environment and what effect it has on today’s students.  The text addresses the major principles of MIS in order to prepare managers to understand the role of information technology in the...

Abstract

...Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809, in Boston. After being orphaned at age two, he was taken into the home of a childless couple–John Allan, a successful businessman in Richmond, Va., and his wife. Allan was believed to be Poe’s godfather. At age six, Poe went to England with the Allans and was enrolled in schools there. After he returned with the Allans to the U.S. in 1820, he studied at private schools, then attended the University of Virginia and the U.S. Military Academy, but did not complete studies at either school. After beginning his literary career as a poet and prose writer, he married his young cousin, Virginia Clemm. He worked for several magazines and joined the staff of the New York Mirror newspaper in 1844. All the while, he was battling a drinking problem. After the Mirror published his poem “The Raven” in January 1845, Poe achieved national and international fame. Besides pioneering the development of the short story, Poe invented the format for the detective story as we know it today. He also was an outstanding literary critic. Despite the acclaim he received, he was never really happy because of his drinking and because of the deaths of several people close to him, including his wife in 1847. He frequently had trouble paying his debts. It is believed that heavy drinking was a contributing cause of his death in Baltimore on October 7, 1849.   Source http://www.cummingsstudyguides.net/Guides4/Rue.html The Murders in the Rue...

Abstract

...Hurricanes are one of the most catastrophic events resulting in severe consequences including loss of life and property damage. The magnitude of devastation was evident in the aftermath of hurricanes Katrina and Rita in the Gulf coast. Emergency management teams play a huge role in safeguarding the lives of people in endangered areas by evacuating them to safer locations as efficiently as possible. An evacuation plan is an essential component of an emergency plan. The evacuation plan for the state of Virginia has been developed after thorough analyses of the consequences of all the strategies but, as with most states, the operational characteristics of the plan at a microscopic level had never been evaluated in a comprehensive manner. The evacuation planning documents previously developed by the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) adequately describe the numbers of evacuating vehicles, their origin and route taken at a macroscopic level. The current study was undertaken to evaluate the traffic control plan (TCP) and the performance of all the evacuation routes - interstate routes (I-64, I-264, and I-664) and arterial routes (Rt. 58, Rt. 460, Rt. 60, Rt. 17, and Rt. 10) using large-scale traffic simulation models. Road network is coded in a state-of-the-art microscopic simulation program, VISSIM. The study area comprised of the following nine evacuation areas – cities of Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Hampton, Newport ...

...Abstract: baumbusch j., dahlke s. & phinney a. (2012) Nursing students' knowledge and beliefs about care of older adults in a shifting context of nursing education. Journal of Advanced Nursing 68(11), 2550-2558. Abstract Aim. To a report a study of improvements in students' knowledge and beliefs about nursing care of older adults following completion of an introductory course with integrated adult/older adult content. Background. Nursing schools are under pressure to provide accelerated programmes to meet growing workforce demands and provide students with the knowledge they require to care for an ageing population. Thus, stand-alone courses in gerontological nursing are being eliminated and integrated with general adult content. The effect of this approach remains poorly understood. Design. A one-group pretest-post-test design was used. Methods. Data were collected between September-December 2010. Students completed the Palmore Facts on Aging Quiz, the Perceptions of Caring for Older People Scale, and open-ended questions about their experiences before and after completing a course with integrated adult/older content. Results. Students' knowledge and beliefs about nursing care of older adults demonstrated an important improvement following completion of the course. Qualitative findings reflected three themes: relating to older people; neglect by the system; having time to learn. Conclusions. Findings from this study suggest that even when integrated with general adult content...

...Thesis abstracts / 75 Writing a structured abstract for the thesis James Hartley suggests how to improve thesis abstracts (From Psychology Teaching Review, 2010, 16, 1, 98-100) Two books on writing abstracts have recently come to my attention. One, Creating Effective Conference Abstracts and Posters in Biomedicine: 500 tips for Success (Fraser, Fuller and Hutber, 2009) is a compendium of clear advice – a must book to have in your hand as you prepare a conference abstract or a poster. The other, Abstracts and the Writing of Abstracts (Swales and Feak, 2009) contains several research-based exercises on writing abstracts for journal articles in the Arts and Social Sciences. Both books extol the virtues of structured abstracts (i.e., those with standard sub-headings found in several journals published by the BPS) but both contain few examples. Thesis abstracts Swales and Feak also have a short chapter on writing the abstract for the PhD – a rather different kind of abstract. Here two such abstracts are presented for analysis. However, because the book is written mainly for a North American audience, British students might like to check their institution’s regulations in this respect. It is likely, of course, that these will not be very helpful. Here, for example, are the regulations from my own University: Abstract The page should be headed Abstract, followed by no more than 300 words describing the key features of the thesis. Many information retrieval...

Abstract

...Abstract Diabetes mellitus is the most common form of diabetes, influenced by the pancreatic hormone insulin deficiency, this, in turn, leads to failure in starch and sugar metabolism. As a result, the accumulated sugar floods the blood and urine causing the imbalance of acid base in the blood causing risk of coma and convulsion. Diabetes mellitus is typically common almost in every generation. The prevalence among children, youths, and adults has raised an eyebrow. People's response towards diabetes mellitus has built a good number of concern in us and perhaps worldwide, owing to the fact that some of the diabetes mellitus patients lack access to proper medication. Also according to Bogner et al. (2012), depression is usually common in diabetes which has negatively affected the provision of medication raising morbidity and mortality rate. Furthermore, as per Vietri et al. (2016), strict adherence to antihyperglycemic is thought to be sub-optimal, he added that drug abuse where some of the patients miss drugs are on the rise. Financial problems, lack of awareness and age which tend to deter mobility were an issue. The suggested some of the intervention mechanism that should be considered by both the individual and the government. For example under the individual take, they should avoid some of the pre-exposing factors such a lot of sugar intake and adhere to the prescription given by the physician. The government should as well come up with proper public sensitization mechanism...

Abstract

...Abstract Conductive polymers or, intrinsically conducting polymers (ICPs) are organic polymers that can have metallic conductivity or semiconductivity via conjugation and co-doping. Polypyrrole (PPy) as a kind of heterocyclic conjugated conductive polymers is considered to be the most prospective electric conductive polymer due to its relatively high conductivity, stability, and other characteristics. Recently, PPy /magnetic nanoparticles composite materials have become a research hotspot, for its potential application in electromagnetic shielding, molecular electronics, nonlinear optics, absorbing materials, etc. The preparation of this material is mainly through in-situ polymerization. The polymer wrapped around nanoscale magnetic particle via particle-substrate interaction to form a core-shell structure of polymer /magnetic nanoparticles composite materials. But study also shows that this kind of polymer coat may reduce the saturation magnetization of the magnetic nanoparticles. Three methods—chemical method, electrochemical and O/W microemulsion synthesis method were used to synthesize different structural types of PPy. The Four probe method shows that it has good conductivity (793.7 S.m-1).The TEM indicates that the PPy synthesized through O/W microemulsion has better controlled nano size and thus we chose the PPy synthesized by O/W microemulsion to interact with magnetic Co nanoparticles via ligand substitution reaction. The PPy/ magnetic nanoparticles composite material...

...ABSTRACT This article reports a research study conducted with four chemistry teachers in three high schools (two government schools and one private school) in Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan. The study investigated questions concerning common difficulties high school (Grades 9 and 10) students experience in chemistry classroom, the possible reasons for these difficulties, and the ways in which teachers help students overcome these difficulties. A qualitative case study method was used to investigate the questions, which used in-depth interviews with teachers, classroom observation, and postobservation discussion with the teachers, as main data collection tools. The key findings of the study allude to a huge gap between what is intended in the National Curriculum in terms of students’ learning in chemistry and what actually happens in the classroom where students learn chemistry. Promoting in-depth learning appeared to be an uphill task for the teachers. The main hurdle lies in students’ inability to demonstrate a good understanding of very basic concepts of the subject. Despite faced with such a challenge, the teachers appear to be committed to teaching their subject. The implications of the results of the study are explained in the context of schools, teachers, and other educational stakeholders by emphasizing the need for synchronization and integration of efforts on the part of schools. Abstract

...Abstract Entrepreneurial Leadership has different definitions as well as different philosophies behind them. Successful leaders such as Steve Case, Peter Drucker and James Kouzes have all developed philosophies, associated attributes and best leadership practices to be successful in today’s fluid marketplace. There are commonalities and a leader can pick portions of different practices or beliefs to form a hybrid philosophy for leading change within their organizations while following Tarabishy’s (n.d.) recommendations for entrepreneurial leadership in today’s dynamic markets. Leadership is comprised of different styles. Organizations are different and so are the traits and styles of its leadership. While leaders want to accomplish the same thing, a successful organization, the methods of authentic, transformational and transactional leaders are different. As organizations and the associated leaderships differ, there are tools and resources that can help leaders in achieving its organizational goals. The Small Business Administration and Counselors to America's Small Business (SCORE) are two organizations that provide resources to assist leaders such as mentoring, starting a business, loans and training. Once leadership styles are understood and a philosophy is created, a leader can then develop a list of best leadership practices that best suits the leader and guides the organization to meeting its vision and goals to achieve competitive advantages and dominance.   ...

...Management Theory & Practice Tara Neitzel MGT/230 13 January 2014 Hilary Johnson- Lutz Abstract There are many times in my life that I have had to make executive decisions to make certain changes in my life. One change in particular that I have had to embrace recently is changing my job. There were many decisions made in this big change, it took a lot of thought, planning, and the weighing of pros and cons. In this paper I have decided to go into depth about this change, which led to many differences in my everyday life. Management Theory & Practice Recently I had to make some big decisions about changing my job from one career to another, from one city to another. I had to make the decision based on many factors. First I began looking for another job, I was trying to decide how far away from home to search, what field I want to work in, what salary I was willing to take, really, what will make me happy in all aspects. First, I had to decide how far I was willing to commute. Time is huge for me, and I wanted to make sure it made sense, as I was working 5 minutes from home with my job at the time. But I just wasn’t happy. So I set out to find a job within a reasonable distance from my house. I started looking into staffing agencies, and doing my own search for a job. I came along an interesting job, something I thought I might enjoy, and the salary was about right for me, the only problem was that I could not get over that my commute to work...

...Jameelah Meredith Career Management Abstract-Career Development Stages May 1, 2016 Abstract The article ‘Super’s Career Stages and the Decision to Change Careers” written by Roslyn Smart and Candida Peterson is an article based on a study of career stages. This study examined Super’s (1990) concept of recycling through the stages of adult career development in a sample of 226 Australian men and women who were approximately evenly distributed across the following four steps in the uptake of a second career: contemplating a change, choosing a new field, implementing a change, and change fully completed. A group of adults of similar age, gender, education, occupation, and career history who had no intention of switching careers was also included for comparison. Recycling predictions were supported by the finding that the three groups who were in the throes of career change displayed greater concern with Super’s first (exploration) stage than the non-changing control group. In addition, the two groups who were most intensely involved in the change process (choosing field and implementing) scored higher in exploration concern than the group whose career change was fully completed. Satisfaction also varied as a function of the participant’s stage in the process of switching to a new career. Global satisfaction with the present job was highest in workers who had completed the change to a new career, but non-changers were more satisfied than the three groups who were actively...

Abstract

...Abstract Understanding evolution helps us solve biological problems that impact our lives. There are excellent examples of this in the field of medicine. To stay one step ahead of pathogenic diseases, researchers must understand the evolutionary patterns of disease-causing organisms. To control hereditary diseases in people, researchers study the evolutionary histories of the disease-causing genes. In these ways, knowledge of evolution can improve the quality of human life. Evolution played an important role not only for the present day humans but all living things today. As you all know, we didn’t just evolve out of nothing, we all have an ancestor whose ancestor’s ancestor is our ancestor and so on. When we can’t go back any further because of the given facts, we know that was every organism’s common ancestor. To understand the importance of evolution, we must gather some understanding of the meaning of evolution. Here is biological evolution defined by one of the most respected evolutionary biologists, Douglas Futuyma. "In the broadest sense, evolution is merely change, and so is all-pervasive; galaxies, languages, and political systems all evolve. Biological evolution ... is change in the properties of populations of organisms that transcend the lifetime of a single individual. The ontogeny of an individual is not considered evolution; individual organisms do not evolve. The changes in populations that are considered evolutionary are those that are inheritable via the...
