INTRODUCTION

Virtualization is the creation of a virtual (rather than actual) version of something, such as an operating system, a server, a storage device or network resources.
In layman's term, virtualization allows you to run an independent operating system within an existing operating system using the existing hardware resources. So if you want to learn another operating system like Linux, you can use virtualization to run Linux on top of the existing operating system.
Virtualization is the abstraction of IT resources, separating their physical instance and boundaries from their function. Virtualization has brought important innovation to IT
Virtualization concept was first developed by IBM in the 1960s to fully utilize mainframe hardware by logically partitioning them into virtual machines. These partitions will allow mainframe computers to perform multiple tasks and applications at the same time..

During the 1980s and 1990s, desktop computing and x86 servers become available and so the virtualization technology was discarded eventually. Client-server applications and the emergence of Windows and Linux made server computing significantly inexpensive. However, new challenges has surfaced which includes high maintenance and management cost, high infrastructure cost, and insufficient failure and disaster protection that lead to the invention of virtualization for x86 platform.
VMWare invented virtualization for the x86 architecture in the 1990s to address the above mentioned problems. In 1999, VMW are introduced a virtualization solution which transform x86 system into a fully isolated shared hardware infrastructure. VMWare started with a long history as an open source which greatly helped the concept developed considerably. Today, VMWare is the global leader in x86 virtualization which offers desktop, server and data center solutions.

TYPES OF VIRTUALIZATION

1. Hardware

Hardware virtualization or platform virtualization refers to the creation of a virtual machine that acts like a real computer with an operating system. In hardware virtualization, the term host machine refers to the actual machine on which the virtualization takes place; the term guest machine, however, refers to the virtual machine. Likewise, the noun adjuncts host and guest are used to help distinguish the software that runs on the actual machine from the software that runs on the virtual machine.
Different types of hardware virtualization include: 1. Full virtualization: Almost complete simulation of the actual hardware to allow software, which typically consists of a guest operating system, to run unmodified 2. Partial virtualization: Some but not all of the target environment is simulated. Some guest programs, therefore, may need modifications to run in this virtual environment. 3. Paravirtualization: A hardware environment is not simulated; however, the guest programs are executed in their own isolated domains, as if they are running on a separate system. Guest programs need to be specifically modified to run in this environment.
Hardware-assisted virtualization is a way of improving the efficiency of hardware virtualization. It involves employing specially-designed CPUs and hardware components that help improve the performance of a guest environment.

2. Desktop
Desktop virtualization is the concept of separating the logical desktop from the physical machine.
One form of desktop virtualization, virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), can be thought as a more advanced form of hardware virtualization: Instead of directly interacting with a host computer via a keyboard, mouse and monitor connected to it, the user interacts with the host computer over a network connection (such as a LAN, Wireless LAN or even the Internet) using another desktop computer or a mobile device. In addition, the host computer in this scenario becomes a server computer capable of hosting multiple virtual machines at the same time for multiple user.
Another form, session virtualization, allows multiple users to connect and log into a shared but powerful computer over the network and use it simultaneously. Each is given a desktop and a personal folder in which they store their files.
Thin clients, which are seen in desktop virtualization, are simple and/or cheap computers that are primarily designed to connect to the network; they may lack significant hard disk storage space, RAM or even processing power. 3. SOFTWARE
Software virtualization is the virtualization of applications or computer programs. One of the most widely used software virtualization programs is SVS (Software Virtualization Solution), developed by Altiris.
The concept is similar to hardware virtualization where physical machines are simulated as virtual machines. Software virtualization involves creating a virtual layer or virtual hard drive space where applications can be installed. From this virtual space, applications can then be run as though they have been installed onto host OS.
Once a user has finished using an application, they can ‘switch it off’. When an application is switched off, any changes that the application made to the host OS, will be completely reversed. This means that registry entries and installation directories will have no trace of the application being installed or executed at all.

4. Memory * Memory virtualization, aggregating RAM resources from networked systems into a single memory pool * Virtual memory, giving an application program the impression that it has contiguous working memory, isolating it from the underlying physical memory implementation 5. Storage * Storage virtualization, the process of completely abstracting logical storage from physical storage

6. Data * Data virtualization, the presentation of data as an abstract layer, independent of underlying database systems, structures and storage * Database virtualization, the decoupling of the database layer, which lies between the storage and application layers within the application stack

7. Network * Network virtualization, creation of a virtualized network addressing space within or across network subnets

BENEFITS OF VIRTUALIZATION

Today’s IT intensive enterprise must always be on the lookout for the latest technologies that allow businesses to run with fewer resources while providing the infrastructure to meet today and future customer needs. * Server Consolidation
It is not unusual to achieve 10:1 virtual to physical machine consolidation. This means that ten server applications can be run on a single machine that had required as many physical computers to provide the unique operating system and technical specification environments in order to operate.
Although a server supporting many VMs will probably have more memory, CPUs, and other hardware it will use little or no more power and occupy the same physical space reducing utilities costs and real estate expenditures. * Dynamic Load Balancing and Disaster Recovery
As server workloads vary, virtualization provides the ability for virtual machines that are over utilizing the resources of a server to be moved to underutilized servers. This dynamic load balancing creates efficient utilization of server resources.
Disaster recovery is a critical component for IT, as system crashes can create huge economic losses. Virtualization technology enables a virtual image on a machine to be instantly re-imaged on another server if a machine failure occurs. * Virtual Desktops
Multinational flexibility provides seamless transitions between different operating systems on a single machine reducing desktop footprint and hardware expenditure.

* Improved System Reliability and Security
Virtualization of systems helps prevent system crashes due to memory corruption caused by software like device drivers. VT-d for Directed I/O Architecture provides methods to better control system devices by defining the architecture for DMA and interrupt remapping to ensure improved isolation of I/O resources for greater reliability, security, and availability

End of Watch

...Justin Champlin “End of Watch” "End of Watch" is one of the best police movies in recent years and not just because I think so, a beautiful fusion of performances and great action. Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña are Taylor and Zavala, two Los Angeles street cops who bend a few rules but must be acknowledged as heroes. After too many police movies about officers who essentially use their badges as licenses to run wild, it's inspiring to realize that these men take their mission to serve and protect with such seriousness they're willing to risk their lives. Taylor and Zavala fit the template of the "cop buddy movie," but "End of Watch" plays such a deeper role than that. They've been partners for years and are so close that Zavala's wife, Gabby (Natalie Martinez), and Taylor's girlfriend, Janet (Anna Kendrick), become more or less like sisters throughout the film. The two cops are transferred to a tough, largely populated Mexican-American district, where their intel and sometimes foolish persistence to not give up leads them across the plains of a Mexican cartel operating in Los Angeles. The assignment they “put themselves on” is more fit for a detective, but they don’t the pure adrenaline rush that ensues throughout the movie, and eventually becomes so dangerous to the cartel that a hit is ordered against them. As the movie opens, Taylor is filming a video documentary about his job, for a film class he's taking. "End of Watch" begins with his narration about the......

Earthquake Watch

...EQ Watch Review By doing my earthquake watch and taking this class, I have gained a lot of knowledge about earthquakes. There are so many earthquakes that occur in just one day. Before my earthquake watch, I never would have known that earthquakes were this common. I found out that even we humans can cause earthquakes. Building new structures like dams and plants may cause earthquakes. There are also a lot of hazards that come with earthquakes that I had no idea about. Ground shaking, ground deformation, aftershocks, landslides, liquefaction, tsunamis, and fire can all come from earthquakes. Once an earthquake occurs, there are consequences right behind it. Earthquake occurrence happens because of plate tectonics. Plate tectonics says that the Earth's lithosphere is broken into a mosaic of oceanic and continental plates which can slide over the aesthenosphere, which is the uppermost layer of the mantle. The plates are in constant motion. Where they interact important geological processes take place, such as the formation of mountain belts, earthquakes, and volcanoes. Therefore, the movement of the plates causes most earthquakes that happen around the globe. The Elastic Rebound Theory was very helpful in explaining to me the way that energy is stored in a fault and released during an earthquake. When you stretch out a rubber band and let it go, it goes back to its original shape, just like what happens around the area of the fault before and after an earthquake.......

Ingenuity ignites the flame and perseverance fuels the fire while mogul-hopefuls anticipate consumer satisfaction. Nevertheless, strategic efforts are an unrivaled asset no matter how great the idea. Since the boom of modern-day business, industry experts have refined how-to-make-a-buck to a complex science that analyzes the who, what, why, when, where, and how of ensuring profitability. A concept known as “The 4 Ps”: sums up a snapshot of their findings: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion (insert textbook reference here, i.e, Norris, 2010). Successful companies apply these principles with a finesse that can lead to products whose market shelf life is timeless. Such is the case with Swatch. The following is an analysis that examines how the effective employment of this marketing mix (The 4 Ps) revitalized this company and helped it reclaim its place as a formidable contender. Product The most basic element of supply and demand first begins with a product (or service). The Swatch company’s central component is quite simply a timepiece, also known as a wristwatch. Created in the 1980s, this product’s appeal entailed a watch that was lighter in weight, mirroring the functionality of its contemporaries, distinguished by boldness, fun, and flair (Swatch, 2010). Neighborhood Watch Programs

...different neighborhood watch programs found in the United States and compare two of them. After researching quite a few of them I decided to talk about the city of Tucson Arizona neighborhood watch and the LAPD (Los Angeles police department) neighborhood watch program. Before I talk about the two programs, I will first define what a neighborhood watch is. According to our book as well as different internet definitions, it is simply a program of neighbors watching out for each other during the workday, evenings, vacations or any other absence. The purpose of this program is to create an alert neighborhood by using simple crime prevention methods. This program works with the mutual aid of neighbors watching property of neighbors. This had several advantages. First, your neighbors will be familiar with your lifestyle, material possessions, and family members. They will know what type of cars you drive and who belongs, as a rule, at our residence. If a police officer drove by your home, he might not recognize that the person standing in your front yard is a stranger but an alert neighbor will recognize that this person is a stranger. The most important thing to know about these programs is that they do NOT promote vigilantism. You are never asked to put yourself in harm’s way to prevent crime. You are only asked to observe and report suspicious behavior and activities to the police department. The City of Tucson Arizona has a neighborhood watch program that seems to......

Euro Watch Case Study

...Euro Watch Company Report 1 ) The Euro Watch Company assembles expensive wristwatches and then sells them to retailers throughout Europe. The watches are assembled with two assembly lines with below specification: Line 1: Old equipment Less reliable Defect rate of 2% Capacity: 500 watches per hour Line 2: New equipment More reliable Defect rate of 1% Capacity: 500 watches per hour We need to find the smallest number of defected watches each line produces independently in a given hour with success rate of 99% The distribution is a binomial distribution since we have 500 independent and identical trials with a certain probability of success and we see a defected or non- defected option therefore in the excel file we should use the command BINOMDIST. Number of trials is 500 and for cumulative we should consider 1 as we want to have the probability of less than or equal to K defects. As we can see in below tables the smallest defected number that reaches the rate of 99% is 18 watches for line 1 and 11 defected for line 2, which is obvious since line 2 is newer, and with lower defect rate. line 2 99% 1% 500 Line 2 Line line 1 Defect-free 98% Defective 2% Made watches per hour 500 Defected amount (k) Line 1 Defected amount (k) 0 0.0000 1 0.0005 2 0.0026 3 0.0098 4 0.0281 5 0.0652 6 0.1276 7 0.2175 8 0.3305 9 0.4567 10 0.5830 11 0.6979 12 0.7935 13 0.8667 14 0.9186 15 0.9530 16 0.9743 17 0.9866 18 0.9934 19 0.9969 20 0.9986 21......

Is It Immoral to Watch the Super Bowl

...Is it Immoral to Watch The Super Bowl? Philosophers must challenge the ideals and beliefs of society to achieve an unbiased view of man’s behaviors. Football is one of the most influential sports in the United States. Most Americans come together to watch two teams battle headtohead on the Super Bowl weekend. Like every game of Football, the teams will rough up the turf and fight each other for points. During the game players will bang each other up and can cause serious injuries. The problem as Steve Almond says in his article to the New York Times is “The sport’s incredible popularity has turned players into national celebrities and has made their mental and physical deterioration frontpage news.” To summarize Mr. Almond’s article, Football is an enjoyable sport but we cannot ignore the fact that it’s causes life threatening injuries to young men. “I love the grace and the poise of the athletes. I love the tension between the ornate structure of the game and its improvisatory chaos, and I love the way great players find opportunity, even a mystical kind of order, in the midst of that chaos (Almond).” As moral thinkers of philosophy how can we sit around ignoring the players? The fans come together to watch, with passion, young men battle it out to win a trophy and godlike fame. With that said fans watching the game are partaking in this ritual. The fans are not just partaking, but influencing the game itself. Buying player’s jerseys or worshiping their......

About Apple Watch

...Apple Watch: Is It Good for Business? The Apple Watch can make you more productive, and it pairs nicely with business-casual dress — but so can other, less expensive smartwatches. That puts Apple's first wearable device in a bit of an awkward spot. It's an excellent product, but competing devices offer similar functionality at a fraction of the cost. Fortunately, the Apple Watch does a lot to help justify its premium price. It offers a more polished interface than other smartwatches, as well as a bigger app library at launch than any other wearable operating system. You also get features you won't find on many other watches, like the ability to take phone calls. And like any good smartwatch, it ensures you'll never miss an important alert. Only iPhone owners need apply, though — the Apple Watch must be linked to one in order to function. The Apple Watch is probably the best overall smartwatch on the market, and the best one for business users, too. But with such a high asking price — $349 for the smallest model with a plastic band, or $549 for a metal band — is the Apple Watch worth it? Design The watch comes in two sizes, including a 42-mm version and a smaller 38-mm version, which are identical except for their physical dimensions. I tested out the larger of the two; the smaller version's screen just feels too cramped to me. On the other hand, the 38-mm model is one of the few smartwatches that's small enough to look decent on people with small hands and wrists. ...

Microsoft Smart Watch

...Microsoft: Launching the Smart Watch Microsoft was founded in 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen, which initially sold operating system software for personal computers and, over time, expanded into office application software, web browser software, entertainment devices, and other technologies. By 2003, Microsoft generates over $32 billion in annual revenues and more than 54,000 employees globally, a worldwide leader in software, services, and Internet technologies for consumers and businesses. With the believe that a new software platform could be built for non-computer devices, Mitchell made a presentation to Microsoft management in which he reviewed the progression of computing platforms over time – from mainframes to PCs to personal digital assistants (PDAs) to cellular phones – and asked what could be the next platform in late 1999. Later, Mitchell formed a team and identified watch as the first SPOT-enabled device after a series research within the wearable market. At that time, there are already several watch manufacturers launched their smart watch, for instance, Seiko introduced its MessageWatch in 1990, Timex launched its DataLink Watch in 1994 and Motorola introduced a wristwatch word pager in 1997. Mitchell commented: “ The idea was quite visionary, but the technology just wasn’t there yet.” Therefore, Mitchell built the SPOT watch based on different aspects, content, the FM radio network, the software and microchips and the watch itself in order to......
