Christmas… the way it should always be Once a year, when the smells of the old country come alive again, its Christmas time and everyone is bustling with excitement. The children play outside in the brisk December night air, the women in the kitchen with stained aprons, the smell of flour, virgin olive oil, as they constantly brush their hair back in the heat of the kitchens. The men they are outside, their job of setting up tables and arranging chairs now done, they watch over the children while smoking cigars and drinking wine. This is the scene of our Italian Christmas. Through out the night can be heard a language that not only can be heard, but seen as well. Talking with their hands, speaking a language of Italian dialects and broken English. It’s the language you can hear the sing/song word endings of the Roman dialect, the slick imagined well dressed dialect of the northern Milanese, the country chopped words of my calabrese, and the hard earthy of the Sicilian. We are all one under this house, so this combinations of dialects works as one language. This is the language that I understand, it the language that my Nonna tells me she loves me. I stand their transfixed, as a young child of ten, trying to remember something to respond with in this language. While nothing comes to mind, I turn to her and say in English, “I love you too, Nonna” and then place a kiss on her cheek. I can smell her perfume and see the way she’s dressed, how they are all dressed: the men in suits, the women in fancy dresses & heels, and the children like porcelain dolls, all ready to take our annual family photo. My hair is curled, my dressed is pressed, and my shoes have been polished. I wait for the sound of Nonna and Nonna instructing us all to come inside to take a picture. It is difficult trying to fix so many people to stand still and smile. The children sit on the floor, “Indian style” with their hands in their laps, while the grown-ups shout in broken English to their children below to sit still and smile. My own mother stands behind me and playfully grabs a handful of my hair and warns me to behave and smile. I squirm to release her hands from me and force a smile. The photo is taken and myself and the rest of my cousins jump up to return playing outside. To explain an Italian Christmas eve to a non Italian is almost comical. Who would believe seven types of fish, or more importantly why? If you are a seafood lover then this is thee one night out of the year that you want to grab a doggy bag before leaving. There were the appetizers of Calamari, fresh deep fried shrimp, fresh oyster on the half shell, an anchovies’ pasta made with bread crumbs, and topped with steamed cabbage, a wild broccoli, spinach called rapini that every woman that helped out thought for sure her’s was the best. To round out the night as well as our stomachs we finished with a salted cod dish called bacala, that’s made traditional with a red marinara sauce and potatoes. I’m not sure if that’s seven, but I am sure no one was counting at the end of the night, cause soon after that we would start on dessert of Christmas cookies and cannoli’s. And over seeing all this festa annually was my Nonna Rosina. How you may ask did all this come about? It is never a questioned I asked, although I’m sure there is tradition involved in the story somewhere. I never had to ask about Italian tradition because I lived it, and still do. I know where I got it and it starts with a small diminutive woman, my grandmother, who would shake her fist at you when she was angry, shake those same fists at you when she was playfully upset and a wink, a woman who had the strength of five women, cooked, clean, scrubbed gardened, and then cooked some more, everyday. She hovered at her children, but mostly her sons. I’m sure she loved her daughter-in-laws, but held then suspect when it came whether her sons were getting proper care. I heard her speak only three English words my entire life I knew her. And when she passed away a few years back in 2006 at the age of 87, I’m pretty sure those were the words she ever wanted to say in English. Those three simple “I love you” in a heavy Calabrese-English are gold to my ears. She has been gone for three Christmas now, and my mother misses her dearly, as do we all. It was a sight to see her beam during those times to see her with all her family. Plates and dishes going back and forth – noisy chatter of everyone talking at once and my grandmother hardly saying a word. And when we were younger and my dad would carry me in his arms to put me in the car at the end of the night – my Nonna would plant a kiss on my cheek and say simply “ I love you”. To which I reply today I love you too.

Food Behaviors and Attitudes

...huge influence on what people eat and the way they eat it. As a fourth generation Italian-American, my ethnic background has greatly influenced my view of food. While daily food choices still show a small persuasion of the Italian culture, it is the holiday season when the true influence is evident. While food is important aspect of any culture, I feel that this is truer of the Italian ethnicity, as it is commonly stereotyped. My great grandparents emigrated from different regions of Italy, primarily Sicily and Naples. Their families found each other in and around East Haven, Connecticut, the fourth most Italian-American community in the United States. As did scores of immigrants, they upheld many of their cultural behaviors while adopting the norms of American society. Food was an integral part of the transition. While food was a great way to connect with people of your own culture and of other cultures as well, the cost of living for many people of the time prevented them from enjoying all of the luxuries that we are now able to afford. “As immigrants from different regions of Italy settled in different regions of the United States and became ‘Italian-Americans,’ they brought with them diverse traditions of foods and recipes that were particularly identified with their regional origins in Italy and yet infused with the characteristics of their new home locale in America.” While my Italian heritage is somewhat evident in my daily food choices, special occasions are a...

A feast central to the Christian liturgical year, it closes the Advent season and initiates the twelve days of Christmastide. Christmas is a civil holiday in many of the world's nations, is celebrated by an increasing number of non-Christians, and is an integral part of the Christmas and holiday season. The precise date of Jesus' birth, which some historians place between 7 and 2 BC, is unknown. By the early-to-mid 4th century, the Western Christian Church had placed Christmas on December 25, a date later adopted in the East. The date of Christmas may have initially been chosen to correspond with the day exactly nine months after early Christians believed Jesus to have been conceived, as well as the date of the southern solstice (i.e., the Roman winter solstice), with a...

...Food Culture – Certainly Italian food and culture go hand in hand, we may say there is no difference. For Italians food is not merely a means for survival. Food defines us. It belongs to our history and culture as much as Raffaello and Leonardo da Vinci do. Italian Sunday lunches are the best example, a unique experience you should try at least once. They say around 5% of Italians eat out on Sundays and 95% are at home eating as much as humanly possible and I mean as much as they can it’s ridiculous. Sunday lunch is usually spent at some relatives home. (Italian food culture, all about joy family and tradition) In any household there is always a grandma or aunt who thinks you are starving, way too skinny and need to be stuffed like a Christmas turkey. You will not be able to leave your relatives table if you do not eat every single crumb they think you need to eat. This will also be your fate if you are invited for lunch at an Italian gathering you might want to be...

Christmas Vacay

...Maria Ina L. Elnar January 3, 2013 Rel 12- My Christmas Vacation My Christmas break turned out to be better than expected. Well I didn’t really accomplish anything but it was relatively fun compared to my previous Christmases. Every day (except for probably 2 days) I woke up at around 11 AM to 1PM, have lunch, go online, sleep again, go online some more, watch the same movies over again and sleep at around 2 AM to 4AM. I guess I’m just making up for the sleepless nights. I know, still very unproductive and very unhealthy of me but going out isn’t always fun for me. So that’s what I did most of the break. On Christmas Eve, my family went to church for the mass (we always do this because my father is very religious) and then after that we headed back home and feasted on the Noche Buena that my mother didn’t exactly make but worked hard in ordering. We ate and ate and ate. There are only five people in our household plus my parents aren’t exactly the fun type of people so it wasn’t exactly a fun Christmas (as usual) but there was food so that saves everything. Oh and the priest went to our house to have dinner and it was awkward (hehehe). After eating, the second or third round I think, we exchanged gifts! Not really exchanged because my sister and I were the only ones who actually bought gifts since my parents gave us our presents 2 months ago. That was how we always celebrate Christmas. On New Year’s Eve, we went to my cousin’s sister-in-law’s apartment...

Christian stores and other retailers can offer a wide range of choices to meet consumers' tastes. Jared Monds, business development manager for Blessings, said the store is selling a new line this year made of olive wood from the Holy Land. "They look gorgeous." The olive wood scenes are one of many nativity choices available at Blessings, which has locations in Edmonton and Calgary. Other stores, such as Wisemen's Way Bookstore in Camrose and Scott's Parable in Red Deer, also stock a good selection of nativity scenes. Advertising also helps the environmental conservation. Advertisement is information. It relays opinion, and it inspires a reaction and it influences emotion. Family and Social Norms Role in Moral Development

...Family and Social Norms Role in Moral Development In today’s generation, cultural legacies and family traditions are the footprints to a person's identity and history. These footprints give us insight into not only our past but a glimpse of our futures. Traditions are a great contribution to an individual’s identity and help to define what generation they come from and who they are. One importance of a tradition is that an individual can take their experiences and memoirs with them throughout their lifetime and pass them along for future generations to share. In my generation, there are two traditions that are the most memorable times. Diwali and Christmas. In Trinidad Tobago, the Christmas traditions in particular go outside the traditional Christmas celebration. Every Trinidadian and Tobagonian passes these traditions down to every generation of all cultures. The Adoration of the Magi

...Arnaldo Garriga Professor Elosegui Humanities Adoration of the Magi The “Adoration of the Magi”, is a masterpiece attributed to Peter Paul Rubens, created in the year 1618 through 1619. In the piece we can observe from left to right the three magi represented as kings looking at baby Jesus. As we continue from left to right we can see Virgin Mary holding Jesus with her hands while he touches one of the kings. And in the back, and all around the kings and Virgin Mary, there is a group of people looking what is happening in the room. The baroque piece shows extravagance and exaggeration on the people’s cloth and body type, I can say that because the three kings are very tall, big in body size, and highly strong; they are shown wearing fancy and extravagant cloth, with gold, blue, and red colors. The baby looks very big as well, a little fat ,and with a strong body for being just a baby. Another detail that we can observe in the painting is the contrast of light and darkness. Rubens focused the light on Jesus, Virgin Mary, and the three kings to make them the focal point in the painting and to create some type of link between them, to show a mutual composition, and he left in the dark the insignificant details. This painting is a religious piece of art that describes a passage from the bible. The purpose of this piece of art is to show the viewers the birth of Jesus and how the three kings show respect to him. The “Adoration of the Magi” relative size is 246 cm height...

...The new girl: “The New Girl” is a story about a narrator and his friend Allison. They are best friends and both live on Prospect Street. Prospect Street was a white, lower-middle-class neighbourhood. One day a new black family moves into Prospect Street and the story describes the meeting between the narrator, Allison and a new black girl. The story takes place in the USA, on a hot, bright summer day. The narrator is eight years old and Allison is ten years old. They are the only children in the neighbourhood. In their first meeting with the black girl the narrator and Allison are quite different. The friends are riding their bikes, when the narrator sees the new girl in the middle of the road. The new girl is laughing and the narrator is the first one to see her. The narrator smiles at the girl and the girl smiles back. When Allison sees the black girl, she says: “Get out of here, nigger”. The narrator is quite positive in his attitude, and Allison is quite negative. When the narrator sees the way Allison is reacting against the black girl, he is changing his attitude too and says: “Niggers are stupid”. The narrator is happy when he first sees the new girl in Prospect Street, because he then can get a new friend. There are not so many children in the neighbourhood to hang out with. The narrator smiles at the new girl, because children do not naturally have anything against other human beings. Children do not have prejudice against other children. The negative way Allison...

Memories

...1. Complex question but simple understanding. My daughter has a way of coming up with awkward question and at times you are baffled with their unexpected questions. One such thing happens to me sometimes back. The T.V was on but I wasn’t really watching, my mind was plastered on the meeting that I was going to be held tomorrow, but my daughter’s curiosity had the better of me. It was 19:30 and during the news report it was inevitable that the PM had to be mentioned. My daughter precipitously looked at me with a puzzle face and asked “Dad, what is a Prime Minister.” It took me sometimes before I could response; my daughter was only nine years old. I tried to explain that a Prime Minister is a leader of a group of individuals who takes decision for all people in a country and ensure people live in peace, harmony and gets all the need we require. My daughter looked at me and said “So you are the Prime Minister” Great thinking. Yes as a matter of fact I am the Prime Minister of my house; I ensure peace, harmony and get all the needs for my family. From there on it was much easier to carry on the explanation. I am the Prime Minster of my house and there is another Prime Minster of the country in which there are many, many houses. Simple understanding for a complex question. Progressively when we grow up we are surrounded with sophisticated and contemporary thinking. With the passage of time unknowingly we lose our creativity and simplicity. In our complicated...

A Doll's House

...“A Doll’s House” is a play where nothing is as it seems; the play written by Henrik Ibsen was an extremely controversial play in that time. Many thought that Ibsen wrote as part of a feminist movement but when asked about this, Ibsen said that this wasn’t so he meant it to be about humanism. He saw it as, every person has the right to be who they wanted to be no matter what their gender was. In “A Doll’s House” everyone is keeping some kind of secret from some other character, that is till the very end where everything comes out and it causes hard feelings between some characters and some to come together. “A Doll’s House” is set during the holiday season. The Helmer is in the midst of getting ready for the Christmas season, buying presents and Christmas trees. Christmas and New Year’s celebrate the birth of Jesus and the renewal of the New Year. This is symbolic of the rebirth that the characters go through during the course of the play. Nora is awakened and brought to a realization that her marriage is in some ways, what one might call a sham. She realizes that to her husband she is not another person, not really. She is seen as most women at that time were as a second rate human being, somebody to satisfy man and take care of his needs, as well as help him in reproducing more human beings. She is unable to be her own person as long as she is still bound to her husband because of this she leaves her family. This is Nora’s rebirth. Nora is not the only one that goes through...
