A Muslim man who spewed threats and brandished weapons in a Facebook video after he was booted out of a Christian conference in Sioux Falls, South Dakota has recently been arrested on terrorism-related charges.
On Apr. 9, Ehab Abdumutta Jaber posted live videos on Facebook after he was kicked out of the Worldview Weekend Conference, which was notably critical of radical Islam. The 45-year-old Muslim took to social media to show off his two handguns and one assault rifle and to threaten the Christians who attended the gathering, The Christian Post recalls.
Sam Clemens, a representative of the Sioux Falls Police Department had earlier said Jaber would most likely not be charged because his acts were within the boundaries of the law. However, South Dakota Attorney Gen. Marty Jackley and Lincoln County State's Attorney Tom Wollman announced last week that the Muslim man was slapped with one count of terrorist threat charge.

He was observed to have been videotaping an ongoing event with his cell phone and carrying a handgun,” Jackley’s office said in the press release. “He was escorted out of the event, but later was found to be live streaming terrorist threats to the public and brandishing a number of firearms and ammunition.”
The previous lack of charges against Jaber had sparked calls for the sacking of the prosecutor and the police chief. Tennessee radio host Brannon Howse, who organized the Christian conference, asked his audience to give their opinions regarding the response of the authorities to the Muslim man’s threats, Sioux Falls Argus Leader reports.
On Friday, Howse also asked if a Christian would also not be charged almost two weeks after he did the same thing at a Muslim conference. Jackley, on the other hand, explained that federal prosecutors have jurisdiction over situations related to terrorism and that the investigation was still ongoing at that

Syria and U.S Relations

...Armed Conflict in Syria: Background and U.S. Response Jeremy M. Sharp Specialist in Middle Eastern Affairs Christopher M. Blanchard Specialist in Middle Eastern Affairs September 6, 2013 Congressional Research Service 7-5700 www.crs.gov RL33487 Armed Conflict in Syria: Background and U.S. Response Summary The popular-uprising-turned-armed-rebellion in Syria is in its third year, and seems poised to continue, with the government and an array of militias locked in a bloody struggle of attrition. Members of Congress and Administration officials are debating options for responding militarily to President Bashar al Asad’s forces’ reported use of chemical weapons in attacks on rebel-held areas and civilians. After the U.S. intelligence community concluded that Asad’s forces used weapons in limited attacks earlier this year, the Obama Administration had signaled a pending expansion of U.S. civilian and military assistance to the opposition. Earlier in the conflict, U.S. officials and many analysts asserted that President Asad and his supporters would be forced from power, but had difficulty articulating how that outcome would take place within the timeframes they set forth. Recent developments suggest that both the opposition and the Asad regime face considerable challenges in their attempts to assert greater control over Syria. Increasingly, analysts have focused on the potential for the regime and its opponents to carve out strongholds and prolong the fighting. Rapid escalation...

U.S./Israel-Palestine Notes Preface to the First Edition (1986) St. Augustine tells the story of a pirate captured by Alexander the Great, who asked him "how he dares molest the sea." "How dare you molest the whole world?" the pirate replied: "Because I do it with a little ship only, I am called a thief; you, doing it with a great navy, are called an Emperor." The pirate's answer was "elegant and excellent," St. Augustine relates. It captures with some accuracy the current relations between the United States and various minor actors on the stage of international terrorism: Libya, factions of the PLO, and others. More generally, St. Augustine's tale illuminates the meaning of the concept of international terrorism in contemporary Western usage, and reaches to the heart of the frenzy over selected incidents of terrorism currently being orchestrated, with supreme cynicism, as a cover for Western violence. The term "terrorism" came into use at the end of the eighteenth century, primarily to refer to violent acts of governments designed to ensure popular submission. That concept plainly is of little benefit to the practitioners of state terrorism...

A Pattern-Oriented Approach to Fair Use

...School Scholarship Repository. http://scholarship.law.wm.edu/wmlr A PATTERN-ORIENTED APPROACH TO FAIR USE MICHAEL J. MADISON* ABSTRACT More than 150 years into development of the doctrineof "fairuse" in American copyright law, there is no end to legislative, judicial, and academic efforts to rationalizethe doctrine. Its codification in the 1976 CopyrightAct appearsto have contributedto its fragmentation, rather than to its coherence. As did much of copyright law, fair use originated as a judicially unacknowledged effort via the law to validate certain favored practicesand patterns. In the main, it has continued to be applied as such, though too often courts mask their implicit validation of these patterns in the now-conventional "caseby-case" application of the statutoryfair use "factors"to the defendant's use of the copyrighted work in question. A more explicit acknowledgment of the role of these patterns in fair use analysis would be consistent with fair use, copyright policy, and tradition. Importantly, such an acknowledgment would help to bridge the often difficult conceptual gap between fair use claims asserted by individual defendants and the social and cultural implications of accepting or rejecting those claims. In immediate terms, the approach should lead to a more consistent and predictable fair use jurisprudence. When viewed in light of recent research by cognitive psychologists and other social scientists on patternsand creativity, in broader terms, the approach should...
