This is a common jingle you might be greeted with as you enter Jack Trice stadium on Cyclone football game days. Many Cyclone fans know all the words to this song, in fact they teach it to you at orientation. But some things many people don’t know is how the football stadiums name came to be Jack Trice. Jack Trice was born in 1902, and raised in Hiram, Ohio. As a young boy Jack was just an average fellow living in Ohio. The only thing different about him and his friends was he was an African American while they were white. Then came time to go to high school his mom made the decision to move him from Hiram to Cleveland for school. She had believed that when he was growing up he was sheltered from seeing the real world, and that he needed to experience what it was like to be an African American attending a school that was a mixture of African Americans and Whites. Trice came to Iowa State University to play football but since there weren’t any athletic scholarships trice worked two jobs while being in college. The first being a janitor at a school and the second was working at State Gym. While not being able to get an athletic scholarship was tough to come to terms with Trice also had to deal with that fact that at this point in history it was a lot of work to be able to live in the dorms. While there were only approximately 20 other African American students who attended Iowa State that year nobody was willing to room with someone who was different colored.
