Once, when the world was new it was a bright and sunny day. The sand which was golden brown was smothered with crabs. The sea was full of fish some were spacious some were small.

In the village lived a young poor and beautiful girl named Larissa. She goes to the market everyday just to sell juicy fruit and vegetables. Larissa loved going up the hills and visiting all the animals while feeding them their favourite snack every night and day. Her biggest dream is just to save a person’s life!

The next morning Larissa woke up, she went to the kitchen and saw her parents making breakfast for her they told her that Maricus the half horse half bull had been released again. Maricus had already been killing a lot of people that lived in her village. The queen was the one who had sent the beast. Larissa had remembered the last time Maricus had ruined her village.

Maricus has head like a bull with an elongated body of a cute horse. His tail is stronger than a horse. He is much more likely to kill a human than destroying buildings and injuring an animal. That is why all living things stay way away from him.

That day Larissa felt unsecure she stepped outside and saw her peaceful village in a wreck she just couldn’t stand there and just sees her whole village in a mess. So she stepped back in her home and told her parents to seal all the doors and windows.

Larissa saw someone she recognised the lady said ‘Hello Larissa’ and walked off. She dropped something Larissa tried to catch up with her, but the lady was on another path. Larissa couldn’t handle not looking in the bag she opened the bundle in front of her inside she saw shield and a cape with a scroll it said “Larissa you have been given an important mission”.

“Why me?”Asked Larissa curiously. She walked to the market it was a really busy day when Larissa finally ran out of delicious fruit and vegetables she felt like she needed a good walk .Larissa saw a mysterious looking cave she entered it first she heard a rumble of snores .Larissa thought it was just a cave man ,she stepped closer to the noisy beast . Suddenly, Larissa saw the most frightening monster she had ever seen it was MARICUS the half horse half bull creature. Larissa was like a frozen lake, Maricus opened one eye then the other he stood up. Larissa remembered the sack someone gave her earlier on she opened heavy bundle took out everything and put them all in place. She came closer to Maricus, he made a scary noise that scared Larissa, and she touched the hairy beast in the head he became red all the way through his body and his eyes became blood shot he fell on the floor the beast was dead.

She ran home to her parents and told them what had happened they were both speech less after a while her mum stood up and said:”Well I guess we should tell the king.” “I think we shouldn’t do that.” But her mother insisted. All of them walked out of there cottage and straight to the palace the king was very shocked that a young girl could tame the ugly beast moments later the king gave Larissa the most beautiful shiny gold medal of all . Days later Larissa felt a lot safe than ever but Larissa still loved visiting all the animals and feeding them their favourite snack every day.

Jade Peony

...Commentary on an excerpt from The Jade Peony In the excerpt from ‘The Jade Peony,’ Wayson Choy conveys the feelings and emotions of a little boy who has just lost his mother. Feelings of shock and awareness are created by the lack of detail present. The author uses the activity around the boy to exemplify and focus on the silence in the boy’s head. Choy uses tone, imagery and the narrative first person to convey the context and feelings of the narrative voice. A sense of distance and detachment from surrounding is established in the first paragraph with the sound of ‘footsteps’ and ‘voices.’ Nevertheless loud auditory imagery such as ‘a chair fell,’ ‘the curtains whipping,’ and ‘snapping’ illustrates the sense of an echo in the boy’s head. It conveys that everything affects him more, and that his senses are more vulnerable. This, therefore establishing that he has gone through some sort of trauma. The actions in first paragraph like ‘kept calling, rush, whip, shuddered and hesitated for a second’ are extremely quick. This is contrasting to the slow movements like ‘pull and clung’ in the second paragraph therefore illustrating the way time felt slower to the boy and the way the world spun around him. The shock he feels, is therefore highlighted. The quick movements in the first paragraph could also portray the urgency of the situation. ‘Rigid arms’ and ‘mommy’s head move’ are the first time that the reader is given some clue about the mother’s death. The rigid...

...stories of why the ding was created. Another thing that amazed me was the different styles of art comparing a Japan vessel with a Korean vessel. When we discussed about those two pieces of art in class I was so interested in knowing why the styles were so similar yet different at the same time. After the discussion we had I was comparing both objects and I noticed more differences than similarities and it all had to do with the time period. The Korean vessel was from 3000 B.C.E and the vessel from Japan was from the Middle Jomon period. The styles from each vessels can be described as unique in their own ways. Another thing that really caught my attention in these first pages of reading were the jades. These were really important during the Early Zhou period. The jades are basically...

Money

..."Although money, fame, and power are all powerful motivators, our conscience can be far more compelling than any of these. The need to feel intrinsically good about what we have done is an innate part of human nature. Very often, we follow this instinct rather than give in to outside temptations. For example, the celebrity Jade Goody grew to fame by badmouthing people, swearing, and doing many other morally wrong things in order to win the reality TV show Big Brother. However, this spring she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. In the remaining weeks of her life, she was like a changed person: she spent her time raising awareness for cervical cancer, writing out wills in order to make sure that her two young sons would have enough money after she passed on, and so forth. Knowing that they are going to die can often change someone dramatically. In her final days, Jade's conscience motivated her to do several good things. History is strewn with the names of famous people who have given large donations to charity: Bill Gates, Andre Agassi, etc. Sometimes, these people may not only be motivated by sheer conscience, but also the public honour and fame of having a foundation, a charity, or a building named after them. But people also give anonymous donations - in 2009, an anonymous donor gave a million dollars to some American universities. As no-one knew who they were, money, fame, and power cannot possibly have been ther reason for their donation. Conscience and conscience alone...
