Reflection I thought it was very interesting when Katie came and talked to us last week. It was sort of a change of pace for us as everything we had talked about had been geared towards careers and majors. But her talking about nutrition and the need to stay healthy was, in my opinion, just as important as all of the other stuff we have talked about. When you are healthy and feeling good, it makes everything in your life better including your job. When she told us how our plates should be arranged and how much of each food group we should have on the plate was very interesting. I didn’t realize that you would need to eat that much fruit and vegetables compared to the other groups. I thought it would be about a fourth together, but it was actually closer to half the plate of vegetables and fruit. Another cool thing she talked about was how to eat healthy in the dining courts. That is a very big issue because it is buffet style and when you see that fresh tray of cookies coming out it can be very tempting to eat about five of them. The step where she said you should rethink your drink was pretty good, because since I’ve been here I haven’t drunk any pop or carbonated drinks, pretty much only water, and I can definitely tell a difference. I feel so much better and not as lethargic as I used to. The last topic she hit on might be one of the biggest factors for the dreaded freshman fifteen, the mini fridge. She said that it should be filled with low fat cheese, vegetables, fruit, water, nuts, berries, and many other healthy things. She also said to pay attention to the Nutrition Facts label on all the food you buy to see how healthy it really

Analysis Of The Episode 'Jake The Brick'

...does not quite follow this kind of format and opts for something a bit darker. Adventure Time follows the main character Finn, presumably the last human on the planet, and his anthropomorphic shape-shifting dog named Jake. Together they are the heroes in the Land of Ooo, the main setting of the story. The Land of Ooo has been hinted as being the future remains of Earth after some kind of global disaster. Adventure Time flawlessly uses heavyhearted situations to provide the audience a deeper understanding of what life is all about. A great example of this kind of presentation is the episode titled “Jake the Brick.” This episode starts off with Finn leaving his home to travel into the woods. On his trip, he takes a break to eat an apple. When he finishes the apple, he tosses the core at a hollow tree stump nearby. He misses and the core lands quite a bit away from the stump. Continuing on his journey, he walks up to a half collapsed brick structure. In the wall of this building happens to be Jake in the form of a brick. Jake is preforming an experiment to see what it is like to be a brick in a wall...

Jake

...1. Is Jake acting "in the scope of employment" or do his actions cause him to fall out of this area? Generally, an employee owes the employer duties of performance and obedience. And under their duty of performance, there is an implied condition that employees will use reasonable diligence and skill in performing their work. A duty is also imposed on an employee to follow all lawful and clearly stated instructions of the employer. Any deviation from such instruction is a violation of that duty. Whenever instructions are not clearly stated, the employee can fulfill the duty of obedience by acting in good faith and in a manner reasonable under the circumstances. Here, Herman has told Jake that he is "just supposed to change the oil..." and not check the brakes, tires, transmission, etc. So it would appear that Jake is violating his duties. However, Jake argues that "as a certified mechanic, there are standards that (he has) to live up to" and that his actions are reasonable under the circumstances. Whether Jake is "acting in the scope of employment" is a fact question to be decided by a jury. Given the circumstances, and that the overriding reason that Jake is working on the cars in the first place is Herman's free oil change it would appear that he is within the scope of employment. 2. Is Herman responsible for Jake's injury? Yes, Jake is covered under state worker's compensation laws. Under common law, employees injured on the job had to rely on contract law theories...

The Other Side of the Bridge

...novel, The Other Side of the Bridge. They were written to be as close as possible to real people hence, they also go through difficulties that change not only their future but the core of their being. Arthur, undoubtedly, is a character that has been heavily affected by different situations in life. Compared to his brother, Jake, he lived a rough life. While Jake was just fooling around and going to school, Arthur had to help their father take care of their farm. Arthur's life was filled with adversities due to Jake. He made it his mission, as the older brother, to protect Jake from things. His brother took advantage of that by doing quite nefarious things and making his older brother cover up for him. It would've been fine if it were just simple things but as time passed by, the things that Jake did got more foolish and more dangerous. It was also because of his brother's foolishness that Arthur married the girl that he loved. At first glance, it may be a joyous occasion but it is anything but that. Jake, the ever mercurial brother of Arthur, got Laura pregnant. He's always had his destiny under his control but that didn't seem to be enough for him. Jake just had to mess with Arthur's life too; manipulating him, stealing the girl that he liked and then tossing her back to Arthur when she got pregnant. Nothing is redeeming about him but fate has been good to him, at least compared to his brother. I suppose it all stems from being coddled and...

...that was supposed to inform him about the Dark Tower. The story took place in a world which had had “moved on”. As Roland traveled across the desert in search of the man in black, he met Brown, a farmer, who offered him to put up for the night. While Roland was there, we learn of his time spent in the town Tull, where he had killed everyone in order not to be killed by them. He awoke the next day and proceeded to go. At the way station Roland met a boy, Jake Chambers, who had died in his own universe (our own). Jake didn’t remember anything. Roland hypnotized him to determine the details of his death, but made him forget it, as Jake's death had been extremely violent and painful. After leaving the way station, Jake and Roland got out of the desert. Jake and Roland made their way into the twisting tunnels below the mountain. Suddenly they met the Man in Black, and as Jake fell from the tracks and now hanged above the abyss, Roland had to decide: save Jake or pursue the Man in Black. Roland chose the last. And Jake fell. He was a sacrifice. After it the man in black read Roland's fate from a pack of cards. Then he created a representation of the universe, attempting to frighten Roland by showing him how truly insignificant he was. After it he was made to fall asleep by the man in black. When he woke up, ten years had passed and there was a skeleton next to him – the man in black. Roland then sat on the edge of the Western Sea, thinking about the three people he had to...

Color vs. Black-and-White Films

...Bull, the primary focus of this film is the characters. Robert De Niro plays the role of Jake LaMotta and plays the character so well, it is as though Robert De Niro lived the life of Jake LaMotta. The characters in this movie were primary focus because they reflect the life of Jake LaMotta and his family; they do not play non-fiction characters. It's rare that a movie with the moniker "based on the life of..." comes across as anything more than sporadically energetic and marginally entertaining. Raging Bull is the perfect counterexample, and a brilliant argument for filmmakers to continue to work in this genre (ReelViews, 2010, para 2). The primary focus on There’s Something about Mary is the plot. The plot in this film is what makes this comedy stand out from other comedy film. The plot in this film builds curiosity to an audience, drawing in much laughter throughout scenes. Without a good plot in this film, it would have been hard to define if this film was funny or not. The sequences of events in this plot are unique and hilarious, drawing much attention to this film. Overriding Purpose Exploring personal growth and change is the overriding purpose in the film the Riding Bull. Towards the end of the movie, Jake LaMotta reflects on his life as he is sitting in a jail cell, reflecting on the mistakes that he made with his wife, brother, and career. Initially in the film, Jake accuses his brother for a lot of his faults saying his brother should have given him some...

...Historical Background It is necessary to examine the historical context of Muslim terrorism in the United States to understand the evolvement of Muslim extremism today. Juergensmeyer (2003) supports this stance by stating that contemporary acts of violence are influenced by historical violence perpetrated in the religious past. The assumption could be made that Muslim extremism in the United States is a more recent phenomenon; on the contrary, this is not true. By understanding history enlightens to where foundations and structures were built to support Muslim extremism and terrorism activities that exist in the United States today. One of the first elements of Muslim influence in the United States occurred in the early 20th century with the formation of the Moors Science Temple founded in 1913 by Noble Drew Ali in Newark, New Jersey and then later reorganized in Chicago in 1919 (Vidino, 2009; Dannin, 2002). Ali’s interpretation of Islam mixed Christianity, Buddhism, Zoroaster and Confucius (Vidino, 2009). In 1929, Ali was charged with and imprisoned for murdering Claude Greene an opponent within the organization (Dannin, 2002). Shortly after being released from bail, Ali disappeared and was presumed dead because he was never found (Dannin, 2002). With the influence of the Moors, the Nation of Islam, another unorthodox organization of Islam, was founded in 1930 by Wallace Farad in Detroit. Farad claimed he was a prophet to “awaken a dead nation in the West; to teach them...

Fear, Love, and Sacrifice: Film Review of Donnie Darko

...Fear, Love, and Sacrifice: Film Review of Donnie Darko By Ruby Redmond Professor Heck English 1010-122 9 September 2013 Outline Thesis statement: Donnie Darko (2001) is an excellent must-see film because of the conflict between Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhall) and Frank the Bunny (James Duval) and the underlying theme of sacrifice. I. Conflict A. Donnie Darko B. Frank the Bunny II. Theme A. Sacrifice to save loved ones B. Sacrifice to change others Fear, Love, and Sacrifice: Film Review of Donnie Darko Weird, attention-grabbing, different, and back to the future explains Donnie Darko perfectly. It is all about sacrifice and caring for loved ones more than you care for yourself. The characters are definably cut out, and their attitudes are astonishing. I guarantee this movie will draw you in more than any other movie you have ever seen. Donnie Darko (2001) is an excellent must see film because of the conflict between Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhall) and Frank the Bunny (James Duval) and the underlying theme of sacrifice. In Donnie Darko there is this weird, but agreeable, conflict between Donnie Darko and a bunny only he can see in his head, Frank the Bunny. Since Frank tells Donnie to commit crimes some viewers may not agree with these “crimes” because, they may think that any crime is bad, even if they are good. However, these “crimes” help Donnie and others as well. In one incidence he burns down a house of a man who speaks on letting go of your problems and helping little...

Rendition

...In this response paper on Rendition, I will be focusing on Khalid played by Moa Khouas and Douglas Freeman played by Jake Gyllenhaal. As I watched Khalid and his actions I felt they were not things he himself decided to do on his own, but that he was being taught this so it seems that Khalid is functioning as a result of nurturing and through awards for his aggression. You see evidence of this in a picture of Khalid and his brother in the pictures the two were holding guns and seemed to be part of an extremist group. However these extremist groups appear to have nothing but young men (teens) sacrificing their life, because an older authority is telling them they should for their country, for freedom and for God. These older authorities use the aggression these men may have and, as Bandura notes, rewards them for using it towards a certain target, in this case Abasi Fawal. I see Khalid as the main representative for these young men because his situation appears to be like many there. Khalid’s brother, who also in an extremist group, was caught in a raid by Abasi’s officers and was tortured for information. He, however, died in the processes and pictures showed how upset Khalid was. I think this anger was manipulated by the older men because they would tell him to “remember your brother” as a way to keep their influence on him and for him to continue with the plan to kill Abasi Fawal. The last scene shows him strapped with a bomb under his coat being urged on by the elders...

Review of Donnie Darko

...Donnie Darko: A Review What comes to mind when you think of a modern adolescent coming of age movie? Is it alienation, rebellion, probably first love? In Donnie Darko (2001), writer/director Richard Kelly employs all of these familiar themes; then he adds humor, witty satire, time travel, apocalyptic prophecy, and a bi-pedal, six foot tall nightmare of a rabbit, who instructs the young and confused Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal) through haunting visions and an eerie voice that runs through Donnie‘s head. Ok, so maybe this sounds like a plotline lifted straight from the WB's primetime lineup (minus the wit), but Kelly uses these seemingly absurd, unrelated elements to create an amazingly complex and clever story that Buffy could only dream of. Donnie Darko begins with a panoramic, morning shot of a mountain range, setting the stage for a film as wide open as the landscape. The camera pans around, focusing slowly on a distant figure, lying unconscious in the middle of a mountain road. The silence is broken only by soft, sporadic blue notes, echoing from a piano. As the camera draws closer, the figure rises, giving the audience their first glimpse of Donnie Darko. With a chuckling smirk, he picks up his bicycle and heads back home. Immediately, Kelly forces the question, “Why the hell is this kid lying in the middle of road?” This is the first question that the viewer is forced to ponder and it is definitely not the last. Kelly wastes no time establishing the film’s dark...
