James Clerk Maxwell was born in Edinburg, Scotland, on June 13, 1831. He was an only child of John Clerk who was a lawyer and his mother. Shortly after his birth his family moved to a country estate in Glenair, which they had inherited from there Maxwell ancestors. During that time he adopted the last name Maxwell. He and his family lived a comfortable, wealthy middle class life. James education was given to him by his mother who was a full time Christian. By the time he was eight his mother had passed away from abominable cancer. After that sad and depressing time he memorized all of Psalm 119. He also became interested in scientific investigations. For example he used tin plate to attract sunlight, and made observations of the life cycle of a frog. He attended Edinburg Academy since middle school. There he won first place in the schools science fair. He even graduated from Mariscal College. James families were very wealthy because of what there Maxwell ancestors had left them. His father John Clerk was a very strict parent. John Clerk had thought that James was slow and wayward. His mother was a very nice Christian like women who had fought cancer but had unfortunately lost. Shortly after an unsuccessful operation she died in the December of 1839. James became more interested in electricity. His friend Kelvin Amphere suggested that he started in order. From Faraday, Kelvin, Amphere and later the German pshschist. He published on On Physical Lines of forced (1836). In which he treated the lines of as real entities, based on the movement of Iron Fillings in the Magnetic field. That is the reason for this invention of electromagnetic waves

James Clerk Maxwell had a amazing idea which involved electricity and magnetism. James had combined the word together and came up with electromagnetism. James showed that the equations implicitly required the existence of electromagnetic waves traveling at the speed of light. James abandoned attempts to formulate specific mechanical model, instead using the formula of lagranian mechanics. Maxwell was convinced that his scientific investigations and the teachings of the Bible were not only compatible, but should be combined. In this prayer Maxwell confirmed his belief in the teachings he found in the book of Genesis. James had an extensive knowledge of the Bible, and was a member of the church which he helped established near his home in Genaire. During the last few years of his life his wife was very sick. He nursed her personally with the most cautious care. When his early symptoms of his own fatal disease started becoming clear to him, but he didn’t tell any one. James Clerk Maxwell died of cancer at the age of Forty Eight. James Clerk Maxwell’s invention of the fields of the electromagnetic waves impacted us today because without it we wouldn’t be able to warm our food up. Also if it wasn’t for Maxwell we all wouldn’t know the secret to his math equation that people used today. Today when people read about electricity they’ll understand it thanks to James Clerk Maxwell. The only people that tried to work on his invention were Joule. Joule and Maxwell knew each other ever since Maxwell had started on this idea. Joule wanted more for this idea of electromagnetic waves. Joule had been trying his new idea of finding the speed of Gas. Joule couldn’t do this because later he died and no one knows the cause of this.

The Life and Science of James Clerk Maxwell

...Science of James Clerk Maxwell The Life and Science of James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879) Physicist and Mathematician “The theory of relativity would have never been possible without the mathematical equations first described by James Maxwell." -Albert Einstein GRAPH James Clerk Maxwell may not be a household name when it comes to scientists, but his contributions to the field ranks him with some of the great scientists of all time.He is mainly known for his ground breaking work in electromagnetics, spurring a field that has given rise to many of the great accomplishments of the twentieth century. His equations, which relate the effects of electricity and magnetism to one another, are key in the development of modern relativity theory and the development electrical components and electronic systems.Like many great scientists, Maxwell was ahead of his time and his equations were not completely understood by his peers, but as science and mathematics progressed the beauty and genius behind his equations was fully revealed. On June 13, 1831, James Clerk Maxwell was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. With the exception of an older sister that died at a young age, he was an only child. His father, John, was a lawyer who was in his forties by the time James was born.John was considered to be an intelligent, but somewhat eccentric man. When James was young, his mother, Frances Cay, died after a prolonged illness (believed now to be cancer). After his mother’s passing, James was raised...

The Future of Super Wi-Fi

...The Future for Super Wi-Fi By Chris Riley What the heck is super Wi-Fi anyway? First let us explore the history of wireless communications. In 1747, Benjamin Franklin proposed that electricity could move through air. In 1819, Danish physicist Hans Christian Oersted noted that a compass needle moved in the presence of an electrical field. Michael Faraday demonstrated the first electromagnetic induction and built the first direct current generator in 1831. In 1865 and again in 1873, famed Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell published multiple papers regarding electromagnetics. Alexander Graham Bell and Charles Sumner Tainter invented the photophone in 1880. The photophone was a telephone that conducted audio conversations wirelessly over modulated light beams, which required a direct line of sight. In 1885 Thomas Edison used a vibrator magnet for induction transmission. In 1891 he filed a wireless patent for the signal system and method using inductance he applied to the Lehigh Valley Railroad system he established in 1888. In the meantime, Henrich Hertz demonstrated the existence of electromagnetic waves with an oscillator. Then came what is perhaps the most debated topic in wireless history, the invention of the radio. WiFi has easily been one of the most useful technologies of the past decade so many of our daily tasks and the devices we use rely on it, and it’s on the verge of getting a whole lot better. First, it's not as new as it might sound...

Case 11-18

...Case 11-18 1. Would you say this is a computer crime? Why or why not?   Yes it is a computer crime.  There is manipulation of data to dishonestly obtain money.  Even though the fraud is happening over the phone it is using the lack of updated computer data to dishonestly obtain money. 2. What internal controls would you recommend that would enable the resort’s managers to prevent such offenses? First, in order to get paid, Travel Agents must turn in proof that they are authorized agents.  A list will be completed and maintained starting with all new business.  Just by saying we are updating our records and now need proof you are an authorized agent is not an unreasonable request.  If there is a license that expires, that license data must be kept on file and have some type of ERP automated pop up that notifies that a license is about to expire and an updated license is required.   I would also call a meeting and explain to all employees as of now, if an employee books a reservation when they are not authorized agents, they will be fired and will be prosecuted to fullest extent possible.  This policy alone will detour employees from attempting taking advantage of the system.  Once the first employee is caught, make it public and follow through with the termination and charges against them.   Also, not updating the Authorized Travel Agent list is unacceptable and punishable by termination (after a reasonable disciplinary actions such as verbal warnings have been given...

Mr. Hocker continued to suffer immensely after the accident, initial surgery and subsequent rehabilitation.  Mr. Hocker has suffered not only physically, but emotionally as well, which caused tremendous stress to his marital relationship. Prior to the accident, Mr. Hocker purchased a disability insurance policy (the “Policy”) from your company, Common Insurance Company (“Company”) in New Amsterdam. Mr. Hocker filed a claim with the Company; however, payments were always late. Company’s agents could not explain how the policy was supposed to work. He had filed complaints and felt like he was badgered a lot, harassed into either turning over the policy for x amount of dollars, which was always an unreasonable and unacceptable amount. Agents had called him after hours, at night, which they said they never called after 5:00 p.m., but they did. Mr. Hocker reached a stage where he felt like he was being harassed and it made him quite paranoid. He had just had a lot of bad times with Company’s agents. Once Mr. Lee Weiser, Company’s employee, called Mr. Hocker often, went over Mr. Hocker’s apartment in Monroe City and wanted to buy the policy, and threatened him because he would not accept $40,000.00 to buy out the policy. She’s been waiting half an hour and then……” Alright Chris I can help you out for a little while…..” two hours later, Kyle exited the electronics department disheartened. Operation Management

...Lori Cook, manager of the Winter Park Hotel, is considering how to restructure the front desk to reach an optimum level of staff efficiency and guest service. At present, the hotel has five clerks on duty, each with a separate waiting line, during peak check-in time of 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Observation of arrivals during this period shows that an average of 90 guests arrive each hour (although there is no upward limit on the number that could arrive at any given time). It takes an average of 3 minutes for the front-desk to register each guest. Ms. Cook is considering three plans for improving guest service by reducing the length of time that guests spend waiting in line. The first proposal would designate one employee as a quick-service clerk for guests registering under corporate accounts, a market segment that fills about 30% of all occupied rooms. Because corporate guests are preregistered, their registration takes just 2 minutes. With these guests separated from the rest of the clientele, the average time for registering a typical guest would climb to 3.4 minutes. Under this plan, non-corporate guests would choose any of the remaining four lines. The second plan is to implement a single-line system. All guests could form a single waiting line to be served by whichever of five clerks became available. This option would require sufficient lobby...

Future of Office Work

...coordination, and some aspects of the job can be done completely by computer now which may lead to the displacement of some clerical workers. The jobs that are likely to see the biggest decline are the non-customer facing jobs like switch board operators or typists. Deskilling may occur because the tasks that once needed to be completed manually are now completed by a machine or computer. Because the worker in this case is no longer using his/her skills, they become deskilled and automation takes over. Inevitably, this may lead to these jobs becoming obsolete and ultimately eliminated. In contrast, many clerical jobs should stay strong even with the implementation of new technology because of the human interaction that is required. Hotel clerks, receptionists, and secretaries may even expect to see growth as a result of technology making their jobs more efficient and cost effective. Mobile technology has added a whole new aspect to technology on a more individual level. With smartphones like Blackberrys and iPhones a clerical worker can access company...

Levis

...Levi’s Strauss was the market leader for women’s jeans in 1995. However its position as leader was coming under heavy attack. Focusing on size combination (which they offer 51), Levi’s was losing ground as more styles, more colors, and better fit became more important to its customers. Market research showed that only 24% of women were completely satisfied with their jeans purchase, at $50 a pair they were becoming a tough sell. Levi’s responded by recognizing a need to be in closer touch with their customers. They began to open stores to sell directly to their customers (rather then trough another retailer). They also implemented new technology such as EDI to help their supply chain. Unfortunately the lag time for their products was still 8 months.           Levi’s was a company that needed a way to strengthen their business. Using the value chain analysis Levi’s was a prime textbook case of a company that needed to improve its value chain in order to sustain a competitive advantage. The results of their value chain analysis are as follows: 1. Value: only 24% satisfaction rate. 2.  Value stream: ROE average more then 38% lead to little improvement in their cumbersome value chain. 3.  Continuous flow: 8 month lag time. 4.  Pull: The customer initiated nothing, activity was driven by sales forecasts. 5.  Perfection: A good ROE led management to miss opportunities in improvement. In addition, use a pull driven distribution strategy Levi’s lost big profits when retailers had...
