What Is RACI ?
Responsibility Charting
Is a technique for identifying functional areas, key activities, and decision points where ambiguities exist; differences can be brought into the open and resolved through team effort.

The approach enables management to actively participate in the process of systematically describing activities, decisions that have to be accomplished, and to clarify the responsibility that each plays in relation to those activities and decisions.

Responsibility charting is completed in a six step process:
1. Introductory meetings are conducted to inform key management of the purpose and requirements of the process
2. Decision and function lists are developed, analyzed and collated into a master function list.
3. Responsibility workshops are conducted to agree upon function definitions and to assign codes that describe the type of participation each role will have toward each function. The output is a responsibility chart.
4. The responsibility charts are documented and reproduced to distribute to all participants and interfacing organizations.
5. The communication and reinforcement of the new role definitions are accomplished through meetings with all individuals and departments involved. 6. Follow-up is conducted to ensure that relationships defined in the process are being adhered to and to encourage participants to live the roles.

1. Avoid obvious or generic activities, for example, “attend meetings”
2. Each activity or decision should begin with a good action verb.
Examples:
evaluate operate approve publish schedule monitor conduct report write prepare develop review record update inspect authorize determine collect train decide 3. When the action verb implies a judgement or a decision (for example, evaluate, monitor, inspect review), add a phrase to indicate the primary outcome. Examples:

...Born in 1736 in Greenock, Scotland James Watt was a child who from the start enjoyed mathematics and was a good craftsman. His father owned a ship building business and taught And trained James watt in the arts of carpentry and building. Through this training and working with his father James watt knew he wanted to become an instrument maker. Watt wanted to follow his ambitions and passion but Greenock had no opportunities for him. James watt then in 1754 decides to go to Glasgow, Scotland in hope of finding more opportunities. Once there James watt met a university scientist Robert Dick. Robert dick saw something in watt but knew that watt needed some more training to become great. Robert dick encouraged watt to go to London for training. Watt decided to go to London to look for an opportunity as an apprentice. Watt spend two weeks in London looking but no luck struck him due to them wanting fully trained instrument workers or trainees serving for seven years. Watt was only looking to serve for a short time. One instrument worker named josh Morgan agreed to take watt in as an apprentice but with little pay. Within two months watts abilities surpassed josh Morgan's official apprentice who has been there for two years. In 1756 the now trained James watt went back to to Glasgow. The professors at the university recognized his abilities and they set up shop for Watt on the university grounds and made Watt "Mathmatical Instrument Maker to the University". James Wolfe, a British army official, played an important role in the history of Canada and is notable for his victory over the French at the Battle of Quebec in Canada. He was born on January 2, 1727 at Westerham, Kent, the eldest sibling of Colonel Edward Wolfe’s two sons. Wolfe attended school at Westerham and later on at Greenwich, where he continued his military career, entering his father’s Marine regiment as a volunteer at thirteen years of age. From the age of fourteen, he starting actively involving himself in his military career and took part in The War of the Austrian Succession and later on dealt with the Jacobite rising. Thereafter, he spent a few years in Scotland, and would eventually returned to Britain.! ! ! After James Wolfe’s successful campaigns in the Seven Years War and his admirable comportment in Louisbourg, he was chosen to lead the British assault in Quebec City by William Pitt the Elder. By the late June of 1759, Wolfe’s convoy had reached the island of Orleans, opposite of Quebec along the Saint Lawrence River. The French defenders lead by Marquis de Montcalm were entrenched along the river frontage, and James, being unable to lure Montcalm out of his defences, ordered an very unsuccessful assault on the Beauport shore east of Quebec.
