Jane McGonigal used a rhetorical question in order to convince the reader that gamers are rejecting reality in favor of playing games that are providing rewards that reality is not. McGonigal, while describing reality, writes, “Where is the gamer feeling of power, heroic purpose and community?” (8). This quote supports her claim by pointing out the feelings (power, heroic purpose, and community) that gamers feel constantly while playing games but not in reality. It is a rhetorical question because it is a question that is not meant to be answered, rather bring attention to the feelings associated with games.
