Janet Yellen was promoted to replace Ben Bernanke becoming the 15th person and the first woman to chair the Federal Reserve in February 3, 2014. Janet Yellen was born in Brooklyn, New York, on August 13, 1946. Her father is a doctor and her mother is a school teacher. Yellen attended Fort Hamilton High School and become editor-in-chief of her school newspaper and graduated as valedictorian in 1963 in addition to that she won the Phi Beta Kappa award, the Mayor's Committee Scholastic Award, the math award, science award, and the overall English department prize. She attended Pembroke, Brown University's women's college, where she was planning to study philosophy but later switches to economics where only few women majoring in, she graduated summa cum laude and earned …show more content…
She become an assistant professor at Harvard University from 1971 to 1976.
Her first Job in Federal Reserve was an Economist, Division of International Finance, Trade and Financial Studies Section in 1977 to 1978. She met her husband while working in Federal Reserve his name is George Akerlof who is her fellow economist, they married on July 1978. George and Yellen has one son named Robert Akerlof. She went abroad and became a lecturer at the faculty of the London School of Economics and Political Science from 1978 to 1980. She also became an assistant Professor of Haas School of Business in University of California Berkeley from 1980 to1982 and then later became an associate professor of Haas School of Business in the same university from 1982 to 1985 until she took leave in 1994 to serve as a member of Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System after being appointed by President Clinton. She was a member of Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System from 1994 to 1997 under Alan Greenspan. In February 1997 to August 1999, then- President Clinton nominated her to Chair his Council of Economic advisers he said "she is an esteemed
