John Shaft’s power is constantly referenced explicitly in the film, in which the dialogue suggests that it is nonexistent and yet his underscoring suggests otherwise. In the scene where Shaft finally found the two criminals he was looking for, they saw him as a bartender. Behind his arrival was a funky, jazzy piece playing. This non-diegetic sound filled the once quiet bar. Shaft once again demanded the spotlight and attention when in this scene he was portrayed explicitly as the insignificant bartender.
