It is a word that refers to an emotional feeling in which an individual has fear, insecurity or concerned that they have lost something valuable or has a deeper connection to them. Mostly, characterization of jealousy includes resenting, jaundiced eye or feelings full of rage and humiliation. This paper looks on jealousy as a main theme in different sectors, which are, the Bible, a film written by William Shakespeare, and a visual art drawn by Edward Munch. The paper aims to explore different areas in which the characters portray jealousy, the reasons behind this feeling and what impact the feeling has brought to the characters directly involved. Narrowing down Cain and able in the book of Genesis, the soldiers in the Othello film and the two men in the green room, this essay will explain how the different characters of different times and different settings relate to each and how jealousy makes their stories correlate with one another. It will finally analyze what impact or effectiveness jealousy has on them. To begin with, Cain and Abel were the sons of the first human beings on earth and related to each other as brothers. Cain being the first-born engaged and interested himself in farming and working on the soil while his brother Abel worked as a shepherd who kept flocks of sheep. The Tragic Hero Othello

...Lucia--Li Jialu ENG 2043 W1 Professor Sharon Wang Final Paper The Tragic Hero Othello “Othello” is one of the four Shakespeare’s famous tragedies. It is also the name of the leading character. Shakespeare makes this character vivid through depicting what he says and does, and impresses audiences with his extremely tragic ending. There is no doubt that Othello is a tragic hero. At the beginning of the play, he was a brilliant military commander who beat a large number of enemies. He even married Desdemona, a beautiful white woman. He was a respected war hero and a loving husband. He was so successful. However, at the end of the play, due to his tragic flaws, he became an irrational murderer full of jealousy and killed his wife and himself. In the paper, I mainly analyze how Othello became a tragic hero thanks to his internal imperfections and how he conformed to Aristotle’s definition of a tragic hero. According to Aristotle’s definition, a tragic hero must occupy a high position and a noble stature. Othello met this part well. At the beginning of the play, Othello was a military general, a high status in the Venetian society. What’s more, many details of the play indicate that Othello was respected by most characters. For example, the Duke of Venice referred Othello as “Valiant Othello”. Montano called Othello as “brave Othello”. Even a herald praiseed Othello and said “our noble and valiant general”. Venetians relied on Othello because of his excellent military...

Marital Destruction Out of Dysfunctional Marriage and Othello’s Characters

...Course: College English 2 Date: 12/4/12 Marital destruction out of dysfunctional marriage and Othello’s characters William Shakespeare is(1564-1616) widely regarded as the greatest writer in the history of English literature and the most pre-eminent dramatist around the world. Among all his works, many literary critics regard Othello as the peak of his tragedies. Othello is not only a tragedy of family, but also a tragedy of love. Jealous psychology of the characters ultimately leads to the marital tragedy. Iago was jealous of Cassio and Othello, so he slandered and entrapped Cassio and Desdemona, which directly brought about the tragedy. Othello’s true love to Desdemona was utilized by Iago who had an ulterior motive. Driven by jealousy, Othello readily believed Iago, and personally killed his own wife, and eventually drew his sword to cut his own throat. Therefore, the tragedy in Othello’s marriage is largely rooted in jealous psychology. We analyze the reason effect this tragedy of marriage by following the premarital objective situation and the subjective married life. Othello and Desdemona’s marriage is doomed and dysfunctional from the beginning because of acute differences in marriage and due to Othello’s flaw of characters. We analyze the reasons which affect this tragedy of marriage by following the premarital situation then Othello’s characters in married life. To pave the way for detailed analysis, it is necessary to know about two types of marriages at that...

On Pale Green Walls Essay

...Green Walls” Word count: 969 Clare Wigfall’s short story”On Pale Green Walls” explores some of the most important aspects of growing up as a child. It explores concepts such as the curiosity of a child and the relationship between adult and child, the importance of there being a good understanding between the two, and the jealousy and misunderstandings that come as a result of a bad relationship. Life is harsh and full of disappointments, especially growing up as a child while being neglected by your parents. The mute protagonist of the story, Violet, is forced to realise this at a very early age. We follow Violet through this moment of realization. During a church attending just before Christmas the main character Violet sees a painting of a beautiful woman in blue dress. Not realising that this woman is a painting of Mother Mary she mistakes her for a real person. This gentle woman is starkly different from her own strict mother who lambasts her every action. Thus she begins to greatly admire Mother Mary whom she begins to see everywhere. Thus one day when she sees a picture of Mother Mary lovingly holding the baby Jesus in a newspaper the jealousy swells inside here and she stabs his eyes with a pencil and draws blood on him. Greatly disturbed by this her mother takes her to a priest. While there she once more sees Mother Mary with the baby Jesus. Greek Members Dating Non Greek Members

...Greek Members Dating Non-Greek Members Morgan Pistole The University of Oklahoma Abstract This paper explores the college dating relationships between Greek (Fraternity or Sorority members) and Non-Greeks (Non Fraternity or Non Sorority members). There are many differences between students in college that are associated with the Greek system and those students who are not associated with the Greek system. The college experience for these two groups is extremely different and the core values of the two groups in relation to the college experience are extremely different as well. Dating a peer that is not associated with the Greek system can pose devastating problems for a student associated with the Greek system as well as the other way around. This paper examines Markstrom-Adams (1991) research in relations to the attitudes on dating, courtship, and marriage on in-group versus out-group relationships. Keywords: college, dating relationships, Greek system Greek Members Dating Non-Greek Members Theory/Hypothesis The theory that I have constructed pertains to the subject of dating in college and more specifically a couple dating where one member of the couple has membership in a fraternities and sorority while the other member does not. My theory, The Greek Dating Theory, states that it is illogical for one to date outside of their circle or associated group either greek or non-greek. The problems that arise from a greek dating a non-greek (GDNG) are many and comparable...

Characteristics of Obsession

...symptoms of anxiety.” It can often lead to an addictive habit that becomes hard to resist or a habit where a person becomes dependent upon someone or something. For example, a gambling addiction may result from a person’s obsession to win; a smoking addiction may result from a person’s obsession to ingest nicotine. Other types of obsession may also include: a person’s obsession with hair or looks, with weight, or feeling the need to look young. Throughout my life, I have experienced one of these obsessions. When I was twelve years old, I was obsessed with weight and how to be thin. Since I was really chubby at that time, I began skipping lunch. My obsession with wanting to look thin resulted in a negative effect; my skin became so thin, and my ribs could be seen. Another example of a person’s obsession would be my younger sister’s obsession with appearances, looks, hair, and style as a result of her often being vain due to her adolescence that she‘s been going through. Lastly, another person’s obsessive habit that I can refer to would be my cousin’s obsession with winning all the time, due to his cocky and arrogant ego. In fact, he has such an obsession with winning that he...

Othello

...Othello as a Tragic Hero William Shakespeare's famous tragedy Othello, the Moor of is arguably one of the finest, if not the finest, tragedies in the literary history of Western civilization. This paper discusses Othello as a tragic hero and compares him to Aristotle's concept of what a tragic hero actually is. First, we need to understand the characteristics of a so-called tragic hero as defined by the Greek critic, Aristotle. He indicates that a tragic hero must have these characteristics: (1) Be a nobleman, prince, or person of high estate; (2) Have a tragic flaw, and a weakness in judgment; and (3) Fall from high to low estate. Using Aristotle’s criteria, we can easily classify Othello, the Moor, as a tragic hero. At the time, it was common practice for the Italian city-states to have a foreigner, with proven military capabilities, serving as the head of their Army. Othello, an African Moor of noble birth, is just such a character and held the highest ranking military position as Governor-General of Cyprus. The city of Cyprus was a city-state in the great state of Venice. His title alone, Governor-General, exudes an air of nobility, confidence, and strength. It defines someone who is held in tremendously high esteem by the people of Venice. During Act 1, Scene 3, the Duke and a few Senators are discussing issues around a table when Othello enters the room. It's clear that Othello is held in high esteem when, as he enters, one of the senators states “Here comes Barbantio...

...What musical instrument best describes you? EXAMPLE: I am a blue bubbling e f f e r v e s c e n t soda-pop. I stand out in the midst of people sparkling brilliantly. A bear grrrowling in the morning mirror… but a cuddly cub purrrring by evening is me. The stars twinkle and shine for me as I gently rock back and forth, back and forth on the front porch swing. My hearts beats like a drum in my chest – THRUMP, THRUMP, THRUMP, keeping time to my own beat. TWO-TONE POEM What color are you? A crazy question, perhaps. Most of us are at least two-tones. Psychologists tell us that certain colors trigger certain feelings or moods in many people. Some colors are “warm” while others are “cool.” Some colors attract attention; others blend in with their surroundings. Our own interpretation of our feelings about colors, a long with our self knowledge can be a good combination to start a “two-tone” poem. EXAMPLE: My Two Colors Part of me is brilliant yellow Lively and vivacious, Bouncy and buoyant Teasing my friends, and enjoying the spotlight. But deep inside there’s another part Pale purple like a violet hiding under a leaf Shy and self-conscious, Fearful and cowardly, Shaking with stage fright when the telephone rings. The Tv

...TV show, causing his other self to stop chewing his lips. And yet, his other self is different, better. He reads intellectual books, asks his boss for a raise, hosts corporate meetings and his “real self” begins to feel jealous. The author also used religious words in this story, such as the word "God," when he says: "My God.” This could symbolizes that he thinks that he is his God, because he is different, but there are still some who are like him, but maybe he has not felt. If we are looking at the author, he use third-person narrator, because he called the man for “the man.” Authors of novels and composers of papers use “he,” “she,” or “it” when referring to a person, place, thing, or idea. The reader gets not a name for the man in the story, but only one fact of the man, and it is that he has the name “the man”. The narrator is third-person narrator, because the third person narrative form is writing from the omniscient point of view. We can also see it, because she narrator can look inside in other persons. For example in this quotation: “At home, the man on the couch, though filled with admiration for his other, better self, feels a twinge of jealousy, and even, strangely, something like fear.” Here you are in a...

...and its relevance as a whole. The climax was Othello killing his wife over his jealousy. Othello’s jealousy stemmed in part from his own insecurities and also from Iago continuing to plant more doubt in him. These things collectively caused Othello to murder his wife, Desdemona. To get Othello to the point of murdering someone he loved so dearly, Iago conjured up accusations of infidelity against Desdemona. Certain scenes play different roles in leading up to Desdemona’s death. This paper will discuss the scenes and prove that they directly lead to the death of Desdemona. In act 5 Scene 2, Othello commits murder against his wife Desdemona as part of a bond he made with Iago, the deal was that Iago would kill Cassio and then Othello in turn would have to murder Desdemona. In this scene, Othello has an intimate conversation with himself and then speaks to his wife when she awakes. With himself, he talks about how fair and pure she looks. She is beautiful and seemingly untainted to him he is hesitant to kill her. He talks to her about praying that Heaven have mercy on her soul for her sins. He does not want to kill her soul as well as her body. It is obvious that he does not want to do anything to hurt Desdemona at all, but he feels that it is his duty as an “honorable man”. He portrays his grief about having to kill Desdemona in V.2 lines 1-6 when he opens with, “It is the cause, it is the cause, my soul. / Let me not name it to you, you chaste stars! / It is the cause. Letter from an Understudy Analysis

...Understudy', written by Kathryn Simmonds, is, by the assignment paper, classified as a 'short story'. The characteristics for this branch of writing is that the story will often center around a single event, and that it has an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. Furthermore, short stories are often, due to their limited word count, written with great precision. If we look at the text, it does indeed meet all of these criteria. The short story is written in a 1st person narrative, the 'storyteller' being the perpetrator himself, Gavin Pollard. The lack of a 3rd person omniscient narrator makes it impossible for the reader to know which parts of the story are true, and which aren't. The whole thing could easily be a lie, but to analyze the text, we have to trust that at least parts of it is true. We are introduced to Gavin Pollard, an actor from London who has fled the country after assaulting 'Alex', the star of a play in which Gavin was an understudy. The entire three pages are supposed to be a letter from the attacker to the instructor of the play, Malcolm, in which the understudy tries to explain his actions, and the reasoning behind the committed crime. Judging by the language used, and the mention of a Golf GTI (which, it turns out, is a car), it can be determined that the story takes place in the present time. From the text, we know that Mister Pollard comes from a lower class family (page 2, line 21; "my parents aren't middle class). We are told that his sister, in...

Personal Action Plan and Observation

...Social Class differences in American society are typically described as lower, middle or upper class. This determines to a large extent where one lives, work, go to school and even worship. Social class refers to one’s status in society and is usually determined by a variety of social and economic factors such as net worth, position of power, job title and dwelling. (Bucher, 2010). Other superficial factor that comes into play in social class distinction includes type of outfit, hairstyle, car, makeup, jewelry and mannerisms. The purpose of this paper is to observe a different social class outside of my normal environment and develop a personal action plan based on my observation to share with class while integrating my new found knowledge to improving cultural awareness and diversity skills. Observation I place myself in the middle class category based on my profession, net income, and decent home in the suburban area. Because of my middle class status, I chose to observe people I believe to be in the upper socio-economic class. I chose the Lenox mall located at Buckhead- Atlanta GA which has been frequented by the superstars and Millionaires. I took advantage of the weekend shopping for father's day to visit the mall and chose the high end store called Louis Vuitton (LV), a luxurious brand name store that sells variety of leather bags, luggage, trunks and shoes.
