This show has expanded into a clothing line and its cast has become so infamous that even if you do not watch the show you still know their names. Additionally, it has created a speech code for its dedicated viewers, such as the acronym GTL (gym, tan, laundry). Because this show has been and continues to be a success it brings some questions to mind. Why did people decide to watch the show? Why did they keep watching? What do they find so entertaining? And why has it become so popular? Through the concepts of Reception Theory it is shown that the show’s popularity is due to how the audience interprets the show’s media texts as entertainment. Real states that reception theory helps us “explore media culture by analyzing the complex, varied and intriguing ways that readers decode and interpret the texts of media” (pg. 94). This includes the commercials, and some of the things these characters are involved in. Jimmy Cross from the story “The Things They Carried.” Jimmy Cross is the leader of Alpha Company in the war of Vietnam, although he seems like he is not part of it. “He had difficulty keeping his attention on the war […] but then he would slip away into day dreams, just pretending, walking barefoot along the Jersey Shore” (p.279). This quote clearly shows that he was living in a parallel world between the war that he was living at that moment and his obsessed love for Martha. During the war Jimmy Cross had two obsessions with his love back home Martha. The first obsession that Jimmy shows is that he thinks all the time that “she was a virgin, he [and that he] was almost sure.” (p.274). Another quote that can be used as an example is how he describes her from a photo that she sent him as a souvenir “Her legs, he thought, were almost certainly the legs of a virgin, dry and without hair, the left knee cocked and carrying her entire weight” (p.276). ...Morning Beach It is early in the morning and the sky is still dim. The immured beach is quiet besides a flock of seagulls pecking at leftover food wrappers. The yellow, phosphorescent sunrise emerges in the distance. The warm, glowing rays greet me with a friendly hello. Miles of shimmering blue water and brown sugar sand encompass me. As I walk along blanket of sand, along the shore, my footprints show my path and are quickly washed away by the waves, turning the shore into a blank canvas. The crashing waves splash my skin feels as refreshing as an ice cold drink on a summer day. The howling wind whistles along the beach like an arriving train as I return to the main area. The rhythmically pounding waves sound peaceful. I walk to a long strip of shops to admire their exquisite commodities. Small, beachfront shops prepare for the day’s customers who will rummage through their merchandise. Key-holders set the seaside products outside their shops. ...is baby powder soft and feels wonderful on your feet. It as if you are getting your own personal pedicure with every step you take along the beach. The sand never gets hot which makes it pleasant to take long walks along the shoreline. The first time I went swimming in the Gulf of Mexico I was amazed at how warm and salty the water was. It was like taking a bath in the world’s largest bathtub. There are several outside showers along the beach for you to rinse off the dried salt left on your body after your swim. The sweet smell of the gulf waters reminds me of when I use to live on a lake. Those were such happy times for me. When I am not basking in the sun or swimming in the salty waters of the gulf, I like to walk along the shore in search of sea shells. Because there is a sandbar that reaches out into the gulf, you can walk through the shallow waters and find many different types of shells and even the occasional sea sponge. The shells are so beautiful and fun to collect. Unfortunately Siesta Key Beach did have one downfall. That was the many seagulls that swarmed the area....

As we drove to our hotel I could hear the proud mariachi band playing their captivating music. The smells of the authentic Mexican dishes that filled the air could make anyone’s mouth water. In the distance I could see the endless blue ocean slowly getting bigger as we approached it. (Then we turned into the driveway of a beautiful castle like hotel where we would be staying at during our vacation.) ??? Later that evening we decided to take a trip down to the beach. As I got out of the car I could hear the waves clashing against one another as they reached shore. I could smell the comforting salt water in air. The crystal clear water sparkled as the sun shined upon it. After spending the whole day on the beach, we laid a blanket on the warm sand and watched as the sun disappeared into the water. It was one of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever witnessed. The sky slowly went from a warm orange to a cool purple. We had a delicious picnic and then went back to the hotel to have a goodnight sleep. Cancun is the most beautiful place I have ever been to. I got to experience the culture and see some of the most extravagant beaches in the world. The wonderful time I had here I will always remember.
