A poem by Jim on his thoughts of the society and his escape.
I’m Jim
My colour is fairly dim,
But that does not mean I’m an outcast,
Meet my friend Huck were gunna leave at last,
He’s only thirteen,
Yeah that’s right he’s still a teen
He’s the only one who sees the good in me
He’s the only white teen that stood by me since 1883
When slavery was at its worst
And most of us would die of thirst
Society is not clear, society is not fair

Oh my friend oh my Huck
You are my future you’re my luck
You’re my escape,
You’re not my enemy

Hurry up Huck we need to get to the island!
If I don’t leave now my body is going to be cheapened
We were on our way and my heart was full of excite
It was like I was going to see life in a different light
I’m no longer going to be neither called nor useless nor an idiot
Society is not clear, society is not fair

An escape to the island is the only answer for us together
Or else we will never be happy, never ever!
I will make sure I care for you more than your father did
Unfortunately I don’t know how longer I’m gonna keep this away from you
But your dad is always watching you
Watching me from where he asks
I don’t want to talk about it Huck “Come on, cover up, good night kid”
The food is gonna get cold
Let’s just enjoy ourselves while we can and forget about him, because-
Society is not clear, society is not fair

All I’ve got left now is Huck
I must make sure I look after him, he’s a wise boy
Not the ordinary that just plays with a toy
Tell them I have a good heart
What white men call a sweetheart?
Tell them I can love and miss my wife and kids just like them
It may be seen as femme but I’m probably just as weak as a stem
Tell them I’d wish my own death
Than to know I had made Lizabeth deaf
Society is not clear, society is not fair

Tell me Huck or why doesn’t society tell me?
Why is it me and people like me they choose to treat in this way?
Even when I am able to find happiness my own way They hunt for me as if I was their prey

As a slave I suffer
But why I ask?
Is it because of my clothes?
Because it does not look like those?
Or is it because I haven’t got the softest nose
Is it because of what I eat?
Or because I live on the street
Or is it the colour black that brings poison to their heart
Society is not clear, society is not fair

Why is everything so strange?
When is society going to change?`

Literature Through Time

...Literature Through Time Literature depicts the morals of time it shift and morphs into less power in the divine and more faith in man. Stories began being written by monks and the clergy which in time turned into regular men with stores that focused on more secular matters. English literature fills up the gap between wars, between societal change, you can see time progressing, you can see our values and morals changing, you can see history passing by. In the beginning there was Bede, a philosopher, speaker of many languages, a man who looked around him and saw a world in peril that only God could save, a man full of faith. Time passes and we see Shakespeare, a genius, a man with a queen, a man who rallied against the common, Shakespeare was a man with deep loves and a strong voice. “The Story of Caedmon”, was written during a time when Christian religious dogma was primarily hagiography, “the telling of the life of virtuous men and women that represents what it means to be a good Christian.” These stories are used as a form of reflections on one’s life as to make it better in the future. Religious dogma needed to be made more accessible to the congregation which was widely illiterate, so the stories were written with easy points and then acted out so that the congregation would not only be awake and attentive, but so that these stories of morality and faith would really sink in. “Caedmon” is probably the earliest extant of Old English poetry, Bede tells about Caedmon, an...

William Shakespear

...1590’s, to the fashion for sonnets, he moved closer to the cultural and literary dominance of the court’s taste—to the fashionable modes of Ovid, Petrarch, and Neoplatonism—and to the need for patronage. Although the power of the sonnets goes far beyond their sociocultural roots, Shakespeare nevertheless adopts the culturally inferior role of the petitioner for favor, and there is an undercurrent of social and economic powerlessness in the sonnets, especially when a rival poet seems likely to supplant the poet. In short, Shakespeare’s nondramatic poems grow out of and articulate the strains of the 1590’s, when, like many ambitious writers and intellectuals on the fringe of the court, Shakespeare clearly needed to find a language in which to speak—and that was, necessarily, given to him by the court. What he achieved within this shared framework, however, goes far beyond any other collection of poems in the age. Shakespeare’s occasional poems are unquestionably minor, interesting primarily because he wrote them; his sonnets, on the other hand, constitute perhaps the language’s greatest collection of lyrics. They are love lyrics, and...

Rizal: Hidden Beneath the Surface

...Nikki Vanessa V. Novales July 20, 2012 # 2012-42443 PI 10 E2-6R Rizal: Hidden Beneath The Surface A Reaction Paper On “Bayaning 3rd World” “Who is Rizal?” If you ask this question to any Filipino, they will most likely say, “He is our national hero” Or “He’s the person stamped on our 1-peso coin”. But is that all he really is? The movie “Bayaning 3rd World” is about two film makers trying to make a movie about Rizal. They found out, however, that this would not be an easy task, for their subject is a very complicated man. Rather than focusing on a single issue about Rizal, they decided to make a detective story about Rizal being the country’s national hero. They tackled several issues but focused mainly on Rizal’s retraction and Josephine Bracken. The movie was meant to be educational, but unlike most documentaries, “Bayaning 3rd World” is definitely not boring. The documentary was presented in a comical way, so that viewers of all ages would be able to understand it and grasp its meaning. I was confused at first because I didn’t know what the “Retraction Controversy” was and the two film makers started having these long conversations about it without explaining it to the viewers. But when I found out what it was all about, following the flow of the story became easy. Another controversy that arose was about Josephine Bracken, on whether she and Rizal were married or not. It was implied that if they were indeed married, then Rizal retracted...

Huck Finn

...could easily be fixed in our world today. Most characters in this novel fall guilty to this one time or another and some fall more than others do. Two big examples of this theme in the book Huckleberry Finn are the King and the Duke. Huck and Jim first encounter the King and the Duke when they are on the raft and the King and Duke being chased out of a town and they jump aboard the raft. As soon as they are on the raft the King and Duke make up stories on how they are royalty. The Duke does his story first saying he is the rightful Duke of Bridgewater by decent of his great-grandfather who was the eldest son of the old Duke of Bridgewater. The Duke because he was a “Duke” had Huck and Jim call him names like “Your Grace” “Your Lordship” and etcetera. After hearing this, the King then tells a story on how he is the late Dauphin “Looy” the seventeen, son of “Looy” the sixteenth and Marie Antonette. He also goes on saying how he should e the rightful king of France. The King made them call him names like “His Majesty” and another names fitting of a king. He also had Huck and Jim give him special privileges like waiting on him to eat first at meals. After the King and Duke establish who they “are” they become quite the team. How to Contrast and Compare in an Essay

...How to compare and contrast essay As you generate points of comparison, consider the purpose and content of the assignment and the focus of the class. What do you think the professor wants you to learn by doing this comparison/contrast? How does it fit with what you have been studying so far and with the other assignments in the course? Are there any clues about what to focus on in the assignment itself? Here are some general questions about different types of things you might have to compare. These are by no means complete or definitive lists; they’re just here to give you some ideas—you can generate your own questions for these and other types of comparison. You may want to begin by using the questions reporters traditionally ask: Who? What? Where? When? Why? How? If you’re talking about objects, you might also consider general properties like size, shape, color, sound, weight, taste, texture, smell, number, duration, and location. Two historical periods or events When did they occur—do you know the date(s) and duration? What happened or changed during each? Why are they significant? What kinds of work did people do? What kinds of relationships did they have? What did they value? What kinds of governments were there? Who were important people involved? What caused events in these periods, and what consequences did they have later on? Two ideas or theories What are they about? Did they originate at some particular time? Who created them? Who uses or defends them? What...

Jim Morrison

...How Jim Morrison’s Poetry Lead A Movement The United States of America found itself in a peculiar situation near the closing of 1959 and the beginning of 1960. There was a tremendous split between two very different generations. The older generation was a collection of people that witnessed the terrible acts of communism and the reign of Hitler, they fought bravely to expel Nazi Germany from the world and witnessed an attack on their own nation. They were a nation of go-getters that believed in the American Dream and worked to fulfill it. The children of this noble and brave generation found themselves questioning the world they lived in and the powers that held control over them. This new, counter-culture generation was later coined the Hippie Generation. Through the Celebration of the Lizard, Jim Morrison reinvents the idea of freedom, excess, and the search for individual identity at a time where the counter-culture movement was gaining massive popularity. This new culture, created out of America’s individuality, later went on to become the biggest and most widespread movement that preached the importance of the individual and expelled any belief in capitalism. “The road to excess leads to the palace of wisdom..” was a quote taken from William Blake, an English poet, that Jim Morrison held close to him. This quote is more than a line from a poem but a motto for a generation that strayed away from contemporary thought and forged a path that was their own in each and every way...

The Doors

...The Doors don’t come to mind. In their short 54 month career the iconic rock band shoved right through the boundaries that so many other bands dared not cross and helped millions of people see things differently and experience things they had not before. With more than 75 million albums sold worldwide and another 1 million sold annually The Doors have achieved legendary status. The band formed when Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek met in UCLA Film School. While walking on the beach one day, Ray persuaded Jim to read one of his poems, “Moonlight Drive”, and a few others. After hearing the talent that Jim possessed, Ray convinced him to start a rock band where his poems would be mixed with rock and roll music. Drummer John Densmore and guitarist Robby Kreiger joined the band shortly there after. One thing that immediately made the band stand out from the others was the lack of a bass player so Ray played the bass line on a keyboard with his left hand and played chords with his right. Also, a session bassist was added when needed. The name of the group, The Doors, was thought of by Jim and was taken from Aldous Huxley’s book, The Doors of Perception, and more particularly from William Blake’s quotation that inspired the title: “If the doors of perception were cleansed, man would see things as they truly are – infinite.” The Doors’ music has a mystical, spiritual feeling around it partially due to Jim’s fascination with Native American shamanism while the others were deeply involved...

Edgar Allan Poe And The Macabre

...His preference for short literary works shows it’s obvious he did not “gamble” like the rest of his fellow writers, such as his innovation of connecting art and environment. Recent critics have focused on his literary method; Poe has tackled the problem of a pieces of work relying so heavily on risque elements. Poe is known as “The Father of the Macabre,” as he is a “skilled craftsman of grotesque tales and romantic fantasies,” (shaping many into one). However, Poe was more than a horror story and poem writer, in fact his oeuvre includes editor, literary critic, satirist, hoaxer, mystery writer, pioneer in the Sci-Fi (science-fiction) genre, poet, and playwright. Poe created an “aesthetic theory, setting the basis to American scepticism through the first person narrative, “ (shaping many into one). Poes’ had a connection to the American culture and improved upon American literature through his philosophy of composition, celebrating a liaison between artistic autonomy and productivity, mainly prose fiction. he also believes that “the power of words expresses the concept of endless productivity,” (poe...

...The eeriness that surrounds Edgar Allen Poe’s life created a lot of controversy to his name. Many myths have been formed after his death at the age of 40. The wild myths includes Poe died drunk in a gutter, Poe was an opium addict, and Poe was expelled from the University of Virginia. As I said in the beginning of my sentence, all of the following statements are false. Many people still believe that these myths are actually true, even until this day! I’m here to provide the evidence to prove that these myths are just myths. Let’s begin with our first myth of Poe dying drunk in a gutter. Poe didn’t actually die drunk in a gutter. The article “Poe died in a gutter”, said he died in a Washington College Hospital. Although Poe’s medical records...

...prescribed calomel or mercury chloride which “if overused can be deadly”(H). More of Poe’s life and acquaintances needs to be done in order to understand the answers behind Poe’s death. The “enemy of Poe, Rufus Wilmot Griswold is a man that Poe did not like.” In one of Poe’s last letters to Rufus he writes that he is not happy with how Rufus critiqued one of Poe’s friends rudely. This promoted a rivalry between the two men (I). Assuming Poe was killed through mercury chloride more research should be done on the doctor who prescribed this unruly medication. If the doctor had given him to high a dose “this could cause hallucinations and in some cases death” (J). Lastly, Sarah Whiteman and Frances Sargent Osgood were known for exchanging romantic poems with Poe. This could explain why he died just ten days before Sarah Elmira's and Poes wedding (K). Further investigation must be done on Poe’s life and friends to learn Poes true cause of death. Since E.A.Poe official hospital death records have not been found we must do more research on Poe. With the new technology and advancements in the modern scientific field the cause of death will be found. We must learn Poe’s cause of death to learn what life was like in the mind and body of one of the greatest American poets in history. ...

Comparing Alcoholism, Rabies, Poisson And Gas Lighting

...Edgar A. Poe was an American Writer, born in Chelsea, Massachusetts in1809. In his career, Edgar wrote famous stories that will be always remembered, like The Raven, The Tell-Tale Heart, and Annabel Lee and one of the most famous phrase that he said was “I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity”. On October 7, 1848 he died and the reason why is still is a mystery. Some of the theories are Alcoholism, Rabies, Poisson and Gas Lighting. Because of the symptoms, proves, and Studies a valid theory of his death could be Gas lighting. To begin with some hints that prove that Gas lighting was the reason of his death is that Gas lighting produces Carbon Monoxide. Carbon monoxide is a toxic gas that could have poisoned him, causing him to die. Poe’s and his wife, Virginia levels of Mercury, Lead, Arsenic, Nickel, Uranium, and Vanadium were out of the normal compared to the healthy modern normal symptom threshold according to the results of the testing of their hairs. As well Baltimore installed gas lighting in 1817. In the same way Philadelphia & Boston soon had gas lighting licking of their own and so Baltimore could have had carbon monoxide of the the gas licking. Also gas lighting symptoms affected people every week and use to kill a great amount of people in the 1800s. In result Edgar could have been affected by the licking or this could have been the reason of his of his death. Considering carbon monoxide is released when using gas laters are used. ...factors that influenced his writing style. Another factor that influenced him to start writing could have been tension between himself and John Allan. (Bio.com.). Who Was Responsible For Edgar Allan Poe's Death

...Edgar Allen Poe died centuries ago; we still do not know the cause of his death. There are many theories behind his death; alcoholism, cooping, rabies, and tumors. At first, I believed that Poe died of alcoholism. There were many some facts that proved he died of alcohol. Then, I talked with my peers in a seminar and they read that they found led in his hair. With him having led in his hair, it cannot be alcohol, but I was then revealed to the idea of cooping. I was told that Poe was unconscious when he was found outside of a polling place. He was wearing someone else's dirty clothes as well. When I was in my seminar, I realized that cooping was the main cause of Edgar Allen Poe, because my peers led me to that conclusion. ¨Poe was incoherent, unable to move, and wearing someone else's dirty clothes¨ (¨Even in death, Edgar Allen Poe Remains a Mystery¨ Tracy Mumford.), this was brought up in my discussion with my fellow classmates, Poe was different when he was found. I realized that because of the led samples that were found in his hair, that I must be wrong and so I went on and listened to other people and heard this quote and realized this was the right decision. I did my research on Edgar Allen Poe. I found out that he was an alcoholic. He drank when he was depressed, he drank when he had nothing else to do. He was constantly drinking. He was always drinking some type of wine. I inferred that he drank his depression away. I put what I had learned from my previous years of...
