Luis M. Perez Essay

...Luis M. Perez was born on April 7, 1960. He started off small by working at a ceramic shop from 1975-1977, which taught him work ethic. He then was a document keeper at Florida Internation University from 1978-1982 when he was studying there. This taught him how to organize documents, which would be a great help later. Afterwords, he went to law school at the University of Florida from 1983-1986. He then went on to be a state prosecutor from 1986-1990. That served as a warm-up to be a federal prosecutor from 1990-present day. While a federal prosecutor, he did narcotics prosecutions from 1990-1995. He then asked his supervisor to try something new and he found his passion working white-collar class crimes from 1995-to the present day. He started off as a state prosecutor. He wanted to step up so he chose to be a federal prosecutor. For the first five years he was a federal prosecutor, he worked on narcodic cases. He proves his cases by showing that the defendant knowingly possessed the illegal substances and if there was intent of the defendant to distribute. In white collar crimes, the process is more complex. There are many papers involved, so his previous job as a document keeper went to good use....

Immigration Reform

...Carol Riddick ENGL100 Nov. 22, 2010 Immigration Reform Roughly 12 million illegal immigrants are in the United States, about 4 percent of the nation's population. Many undocumented children were brought into the U.S. by their illegal immigrant parents as babies or toddlers. Nearly 4 million children who have at least one parent who entered the U.S. illegally were born in the United States and are U.S. citizens as a result. According to the study conducted by the Pew Hispanic Center, the majority of illegal immigrants, about 7 million, come from Mexico. The U.S. government should change the requirements for obtaining legal status for illegal immigrants. The DREAM (Development, Relief and Education of Alien Minors) Act is proposed federal legislation that would allow the children of undocumented immigrants who graduate from high school to earn conditional permanent residency if they complete two years in the military or at college. Eligible students must have entered the US before the age of 16, been living in the US for at least five consecutive years, be between the ages of 12 and 35 at the time of applying, and have good moral character. The legislation was first introduced in the Senate in August 2001, but was stalled in Congress for 9 years and most recently re-introduced in the Senate and House in March 2009. The DREAM Riddick 2 ACT would help immigrant students become legal residents of the United...

What the Day Owes the Night

...angoisses me troublait.

The Superstar Effect: Nba Players and Team Influence

...The Superstar Effect: NBA Players and Team Influence I. Introduction Individual influence in a group setting has been studied among numerous academic fields for decades. In particular, productivity is often seen as a positive externality, in which the efficiency of a single individual in certain environments may others to also be more efficient, leading to better performance of the overall group [1]. This increase in productivity can be observed in a variety of different environments, including but not limited to the work office, education, and even in a domestic setting. Specifically in sports teams, this phenomenon is coined “the superstar effect”. In the past, there has been much debate regarding the actual impact of the superstar effect. These studies bring up many important issues that we will address before proceeding with our work. Among these questions are: Who qualifies as a superstar? How do we define a player to be “productive”? Under what metrics will we look at to determine the supposed effect of these players? All of these are valid points that we must carefully define to progress with our experimentation. II. Background and Data Our first and foremost question is what we base our data and work on: how do we define a superstar? Past work shows numerous ways to address this topic. One common way to determine a superstar is to refer to the number of times he or she has made an All-Pro team, or a player who has played in the NBA All-Star...

...Safeway. This process helped him to gain 10 years of valuable retail experience. At the age of 25, he stop his day job and worked late night stocking groceries and started working out and bicycling during the day. Usually after exercising, he would buy a smoothie, which was healthier than frozen drinks. This eventually put the ideas in his mind to open his own smoothie store. Kirk Perron started to gather his people to help him launch the business. He met his director of research and developer, Joe Vergara, at Safeway store who already was involved in the juice bar business, Kevin Peters who became director of partnership development, and Linda Ozawa the head of marketing. One of the obstacles that Kirk Perron faced at the start of the business was the fact that he could not convince the bank to get loan. Therefore, he had to sell his apartment and borrow money from his mother and his friend, all together he got $115,000. This is how they could get their first location on San Luis Obispo and in April 1990, they opened their first smoothie store, and named it Juice Club. BMW, the German carmaker, opened its factory in the southern state of Santa Catarina to begin producing its Series 3 sedan in an investment that is projected to cost R$600m ($240m) and generate 1,300 jobs. “Whether or not to export will depend on the economy and the speed with which we manage to nationalise production of our cars,” Arturo Piñeiro, president of the carmaker in Brazil, said at the opening ceremony. BMW is not the only company investing in an economy that is undergoing a deep shift in trade flows with the end of the commodity supercycle and the slowdown in China. In the 10 months to the end of October, Brazil attracted $52bn of foreign direct investment inflows, putting it on track to reach about $60bn by the end of 2014, roughly in line with previous years. “This will be another positive year,” says Alexandre Petry, executive manager of investments at Apex-Brasil, the export promotion agency of Brazil. “The principal driver for investors is our market: 200m people with a lower...
