PANASONIC PHILIPPINES I. Point of View

This paper is based on the information provided by the article and is divided into two sections. The first section discusses the problems or difficulties currently confronting the Panasonic Philippines. The second section offers suggestions that would allow Panasonic to address the difficulties it now faces.

II. The Problem Productivity has dropped within the Department and employees there appear to have low motivation and confusion. How they intend to compete with giants electronic manufacturers from China and South Korea, is a big problem of Panasonic. Presently their warehouse is in a mess; products are mixed up and disordered. There is a severe backlog of customers’ orders. And customers have complained of pick-up errors. Ashton Javier, Director for Facilities and Safety, is in a dilemma on what to do to turn around the company’s warehouse and storage system.

III. Objective The primary aim of this analysis is to determine whether demand and inventory are in balance or not in the company and what course of action is to be undertaken to resolve the existing problem on storage and delivery of products.

IV. Areas of Consideration 1. Panasonic Philippines, a branded name electronics manufacturer in Pasig, has been one of the leading electronic firms in the country. 2. Their products could not be shipped out of door because of poor storage and delivery system.

V. Alternative Courses of Action Advantages | Disadvantages | 1. Technological changes will benefit the company because of its rich and deep stock of content. * Layout Master IV Simulation Software can implement new distribution design * Panasonic was able to increase the customers’ orders daily from 250 to 570 * The Technology eliminates order backlogs | 1. The Technology is costly and very expensive. Its cost ranging from P800,000 to 3million | 2. Ashton Javier must reinforce the structural and cultural changes in the warehouse as director for facilities and safety of the company. * He must implement 5s in the department. * Hire new breed of workers who can actively perform storage and delivery well.* Javier must actively lead his men towards a systematize storage system. | 2. This reinforcement may take time and needs restructuring of both work force and system procedures. |
The table above shows the advantages and disadvantage of allowing technology to run the company’s storage system.
Firstly, although the software is costly and very expensive, this technological change is necessary for a successful change at Panasonic.
Secondly, the difficulties at Panasonic were the result of problems identified in the previous section. These problems can be remedied if Panasonic will streamline their storage and delivery procedures. Ashton Javier can reinforce the structural and cultural changes with his behavior as leader.

VI. Recommendation / Conclusion
I recommend that Panasonic purchase and implements the Layout Master IV Simulation software to run the company’s storage and delivery system. Although the software is costly and very expensive, this technology is necessary for a successful change at Panasonic.
However, I would like to suggest that Panasonic takes the following steps first before fully implementing technological change in the company system: It is necessary for the Panasonic organization to clearly identify the following: what businesses it is in, how it intends to compete, and who its target customers are. They have also to strengthen their objectives or their expectations against which performance can be compared. And lastly what is really the company’s vision or expression of the organization’s broader aspirations. With clear strategic views, Panasonic can clearly identify what other critical task is necessary to remedy.
