World War one is now seen as one of the bloodiest wars in history and one of the wars that had the highest number of causalities. But at the time when WWI was occurring there was a great deal of nationalism, which as a consequence, the war was seen as a necessity. In my opinion, the purpose why a WWI veteran wrote this book was to show the truth behind what actually happens in war and what is the reality of being a soldier. The author tried to achieve this by writing about the main character’s experiences when he got recruited, his actual experiences in war, and his experiences when he went back home and attempted to tell people his experiences in the war. In the beginning of the movie, there is propaganda coming from the professor who is motivating the students to sign up for the war as can be seen in this line from the movie “You are the life of the fatherland, you boys. You are the iron men of Germany. You are the gay heroes who will repulse the enemy when you are called upon to do so” (All Quiet on the Western Front). Here he is painting war to be a custom that they all must complete to be honorable German people, almost like a rite of passage. Furthermore, what they are imagining they will gain from war also goes along with this propaganda such as one student imagines that when he becomes a soldier all the …show more content…
In this quote he sees one of his friends die for the first time “Bombardment. My eyes! I'm blind! I can't see! God! My eyes! I can't see! Lay down and stay there! He's dead” (All Quiet on the Western Front). They also encounter starvation when there is a lack of food at their first station as stated in this quote “This is a bad town to bring an appetite to, soldier. We’ve been here since yesterday morning living on baled hay and razor blades” (All Quiet on the Western Front). And they are genially confused by the lack of

In that which concerns Fiction, the following documents are the ones considered as narrative: Speeches Letters Short Stories Essays Political Documents Sermons Novels Diaries 1 FIRST LITERARY EXPRESSIONS The first documents in which the idea of Americanism is very present are the Sermons. They respond to the strict Protestantism settled in the New Continent after the arrival of the Pilgrim Fathers and Puritans in the Mayflower (1620) and the Arabella (1630). They established a theocratic community whose main and only point of reference was the Bible. That is why the idea of the ‘city upon a hill’ is still very present in American mentality. As we all know, their community was also governed by the concept of Predestination. This belief was based in the idea that we are saved or condemned since the very moment we are born or even, since the very moment when the Universe was created. Therefore, the way they confronted Good and Evil was that of effect-cause: if you are one of those who were going to be saved you certainly behaved as they were...

...Praise for The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down “Fadiman describes with extraordinary skill the colliding worlds of Western medicine and Hmong culture.” —The New Yorker “This fine book recounts a poignant tragedy…It has no heroes or villains, but it has an abundance of innocent suffering, and it most certainly does have a moral…[A] sad, excellent book.” —Melvin Konner, The New York Times Book Review “An intriguing, spirit-lifting, extraordinary exploration of two cultures in uneasy coexistence…A wonderful aspect of Fadiman’s book is her even-handed, detailed presentation of these disparate cultures and divergent views—not with cool, dispassionate fairness but rather with a warm, involved interest that sees and embraces both sides of each issue…Superb, informal cultural anthropology—eye-opening, readable, utterly engaging.” —Carole Horn, The Washington Post Book World “This is a book that should be deeply disturbing to anyone who has given so much as a moment’s thought to the state of American medicine. But it is much more…People are presented as [Fadiman] saw them, in their humility and their frailty—and their nobility.” —Sherwin B. Nuland, The New Republic 3/462 “Anne Fadiman’s phenomenal first book, The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, brings to life the enduring power of parental love in an impoverished refugee family struggling to protect their seriously ill infant daughter and ancient spiritual traditions from the tyranny of welfare bureaucrats and intolerant...
