He was holding his heater to his head. “I’m fine,” Dally said when he turned around. Darry started to move towards him. Before Darry got even a step closer Dally yelled “Stop!” as he moved his finger closer to the trigger. The only thing going through my head right now was wondering why he would do this. I mean I know losing Johnny must have been hard for him, but I thought we were past all that. “You don’t wanna do that, Dally,” Darry said, breaking into my own thoughts. I was trying hard to catch my breath, but I couldn’t. It was short and painful, like someone had just come up and punch me hard in the chest. Now there were a billion thoughts running through my head, but they were all unclear. Soda came up behind me and helped me up. “Breath” he said calmly. “You're okay, Pony.” I stood up and finally caught my breath. I looked back up to see Dally still lying on the ground. He didn’t look like Johnny had when he died. I walked up to his body and stared into his eyes. They seemed happy. “Dally really did want to die,” I thought.
Steve had already ran back to the house to call the ambulance. Darry had Soda take me home while he and Two-Bit stayed to explain everything to the cops.
When we got back to the house, everyone was quiet. I went in my room and laid down trying to think about everything that Dally and me had talked about when it was just us in the graveyard. I still didn’t understand why Dally would want to die. “Was it because Johnny was dead?” I thought. I don’t know why, but for some reason this didn’t seem to be the right answer. It just didn’t make sense.
About an hour later, I heard the front door open then shut and I knew it was Two-Bit and Darry. I walked in the living room where everyone else was.
