Dillinger is most known for the string of bank robberies he performed with his gang, which are presented throughout the film. He is not, however, often credited as a murderer, given in present times it is thought that he may only have personally killed one man. Conversely, actor Johnny Depp's character is shown killing many others, therefore depicting Dillinger as a more cold character, while adding drama and interest to the film. The movie begins with a jailbreak shootout involving the thief and a few members of his gang, ending in multiple injuries on both sides of the law. Records are clear, however and show that Dillinger was certainly not present at this real-life event, being kept in a prison in Ohio at the time, not the shootout in Indiana.
