Why Do People Want To Fight In The Civil War

...In the civil war there were people that wanted to fight so bad that they dressed as if they were a white male in his 30’s. Why did they do this? Who did this? They could have said it was there calling, what they need to do for their future, or just got drafted, but instead there were three really big reasons for...

Why I Joined

...their opinions, one question pervades, "Why did you do it?" Some people have asked why I would leave my son without his mother for so long. Others inquire about my motivation for enlisting during a time of war. There are those who wonder at my sanity for giving up a five thousand dollar a month job. Still more ask why I would leave school when I am accomplishing so much. I can answer each of these probing questions by stating my unshakable belief in seven priceless values: loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and courage. Loyalty is an allegiance to something. My allegiance to the United States of America is more than just a line I recite when saying the pledge. Rather, it is an honest, deep, binding loyalty to my country and its people. My decision to join the Army is an expression of that love. Duty is the moral or legal obligation to take action. I understand that every right ordains an accompanying responsibility. We did not become the great nation we are by accident; we earned the distinction, and we must never forget the price of that freedom. It was paid in blood by countless Americans who were willing to answer the call of duty. My decision to join the Army is a fulfillment of that obligation. Respect is an admiration or high regard for something. My respect for human life, for human dignity and for a person's inalienable rights defies all my attempts to frame it in mere words. My decision to join the Army is a demonstration of that reverence...

...sand squish slowly through my toes as I carelessly walked down the shoreline of one of the greatest beaches of Thailand. Off in a distance, the reflection of the sun in the ocean began to set in a sleepy leisurely fashion. But as the sun kept on fading, the more crowded the beach was becoming. I was bewildered but the perplexity of my thoughts kept me out of the darkness as I sat captivated and allowing the foamy mist from the unbridled ocean spray my face lightly as though it was the touch of a feather. This was the best moment of my life. I thought. All my friends were enjoying the bittersweet warmth of the ocean and me, I was just so afraid to even stand and put that first leg in the ocean. They didn’t know that I couldn’t swim and I didn’t want to tell them because I thought that I was going to embarrass myself but I wish that I did. “Didier, are you going to swim? The water is really nice.” Said one of my friends and by the way she was my girlfriend since grade 3. I just wish that I had said no but I didn’t. I recklessly said yes, my body prickled with scariness. I was scared and slipped across on a shadowy side ready to call upon the stars to illuminate my paths. I took that first step and gazed at the vast blue deep ocean. “You can do it”, I kept on telling myself but could I really do it? No I couldn’t. Military

...Controversy in the Military For the longest time homosexuals have had to deal with discrimination everywhere, including the military. When Bill Clinton ran for president, he gave a promise to the gays he would allow them to fight, but changed his stance when elected and did not follow through on his promise. Instead Clinton issued the policy Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell that still hindered the homosexual’s chance of getting into the military. Finally, now after years of discrimination, a Representative of the House wrote a bill that will allow homosexuals the right to join and fight in the armed forces. The H.R. 1283 Military Readiness Enhancement Act of 2009 states homosexuals can join the military and should pass for the benefit of all those who serve the armed forces. Official discrimination against homosexuals began during World War II. Before World War II, it was only African Americans who had a hard time joining the military, but then the military started becoming stricter on who can join and who cannot. The military started making people take a psychological test, where anyone who wanted to join the military had to get tested by a psychiatrist (Katel). If people claimed they were gay, they could not join the armed forces. Discrimination continued in every war America has fought until Bill Clinton came along. When Clinton ran for president, he guaranteed to lift the ban that the military established on not allowing homosexuals the right to fight. To get around his campaign...

Winston Is a Hero

...instead, a leader, and so, a hero. Thus by proving the presence of superior qualities within himself that distinguishes him from others, Winston enables himself to be seen as a true heroic figure. There are many events in the novel that show how brave Winston is. One example is in the beginning of the novel where Winston pulls out his diary and expresses how he feels. Winston knows that he will get severely punished for committing thought crime yet he still goes about it. On page 20, he stated, DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER It is bad enough that he even opened his diary, but Winston had the guts to oppose big brother and express his hate for the party. This shows that he doesn’t really care about getting tortured and possibly “vaporized”. Secondly, having an affair with someone illegally is an act of committing thought crime, and whoever does that gets sent to the ministry of love and the get tortured severely. Robber Barons Research Paper

...What are some arguments in favor of the Robber Barons (or captains of industry)? Just as professor Burton mentioned, the Robber Barons were not one sided, in that they were only good or bad. The truth is that they were complex individuals that did do good and bad things. In addition, one argument in favor of Robber Barons consists of the philanthropy that these individuals practiced. Consequently, in many cases their intentions may be maleficent, however, if the donations that these individuals made to society helped, then they can be labeled as beneficial. For example, Daniel Drew built several churches; helped found Drew Theological Seminary and Drew Seminary for Young Ladies. These institutions helped society in a positive fashion. Additionally,...

...most people know of, the Bloods and the Crips did not form until later. Many people question why young men and even kids join gangs, and there can be different answers to that question. However many people can agree that gangs and gang involvement is deviant act. The question now is what type of deviant organization are gangs, according to me, I believe that gangs are organized crime groups, or also a deviant family outlook. I believe that gangs are organized crime groups because gangs make up 48% of violent crimes (www.fbi.gov). Gangs take part in many different violent acts such as murder, theft, rape, kidnaping and etc… That is because gangs compete with other rival gangs, and when asked why they fight most gang members did not have a reason why. (Made in America Video). However they said if they kill one of us, than we go and kill three of them, it is that type of attitude that has led to 48% of violent crimes. (Made in America Video). Gangs to me are also organized crime groups because they participate in drug manufacturing, trade, and distribution which has to be carefully operated, without it being organized there would not be a profit made. Participating in all these different activities within the gang is what leads me to believe that they are an organized crime group. Another question that many people ask is, why do young men and kids join gangs? After reading “Why American Boys Join Gangs” the majority of kids that join gangs are low income minorities. According to...

Religion

...children? This question is what set some Christian apart when it comes to baptizing their kids at an early age. Because some of them reject baptizing kids at a young age, because children do not understand or know any better. Many nondenominational churches request that members get immerse in water no matter what your age is. While other accepts you as a member just because you had some water sprinkle on you when was a kid (Ken Camp, Baptist Standard Friday April 23, 2010).However, nearly all believers that have been baptize believe it is a no-soul saving power. But some believe baptism to be very vital in becoming a member of any church, so if this is true why such a big deal about children being dunk into some water to prove a point in the first place. Furthermore, many Christians pick a church base on the different programs that are offer like music, two services during Sunday, and of course whether kids are baptize at an early age. Because, some churches want to know before you even join are you or have you ever been baptize or not. Because denominations are losing their grip on member being baptize. Some people move from city to city looking for a church to call home. Wherever, people come from and what reason they are looking for a new home church. All people are looking for is a stable foundation and feeling a part of. Therefore some sociologists of religion think that, some people do not value tradition or loyalty anymore as they once did. Choosing...

Choices of life What would you do if you could decide your future, your life and your way in a couple of seconds? Will you take the chance and risk, or will you sit and wait for something else to happen? I took a risk when I decided to come in the United States, and there is no doubt that this decision has been the biggest choice I had to make in my life so far. The proposal came almost out of nowhere. I had heard about a coach who was interested in college soccer players, so I went to a scrimmage he had organized, not thinking that I could be the chosen one, not thinking that a day like that could change my entire life course. After the game, the coach came to me and asked me, “Do you want to come to America?” I accepted the proposal in no time. After all, that was the reason I went to the scrimmage in the first place. I was so happy he selected me out of so many players that I did not think about the importance of my decision. After a few days and sleepless nights, I began to have second thoughts. I realized how big this was...
