Epidemic of Designer Drugs

...Epidemic of Designer Drugs Tom Lenderink Dordt College Epidemic of Designer Drugs Designer drugs are a recent epidemic that has hit the United States by storm. According to Loeffler, Hurst, Penn, and Yung (2012), “Designer drugs are synthetic compounds that contain modified molecular structures of illegal or controlled substances. They are produced clandestinely with the intent to elicit effects similar to controlled substances while circumventing existing drug laws” (p. 1041). There are two types of designer drugs that have become an outbreak to the world that is seen today and those are called synthetic cannabinoid and synthetic cathinones (Loeffler et al., 2012). These drugs have hit the drug industry and are catastrophic to the dimensions of our brain’s reward center that end up causing people to hallucinate beyond measures that have not been seen or heard with other drugs. One case, according to an article by Marder (2012), is about a kid named Dickie Sander, who committed suicide with his .22 caliber youth rifle just five days after snorting a powder from his friend. He experienced days of insomia, panic episodes, and delusional states that gave him fear. In one instance Sanders was glancing outside his kitchen window and he saw 25 cop cars. In response, Sanders try to commit suicide by taking one of the kitchen knifes and slitting his throat resulting in a trip to the hospital for stitches to his neck. The hallucinations then diminished as he was released from the...

Cervical Cancer

...Kelly Dunn HED 414 C. Rath Cervical cancer is considered to be a slow-growing reproductive disease that affects thousands of women in the United States annually. This particular type of cancer forms within and/or on the tissue of the cervix. The cervix is part of the female reproductive tract, which connects the uterus to the vagina. Cervical cancer begins when surface level cells on the cervix divide uncontrollably causing cervical lesions, which if left untreated can progress into cancer. If not found in the early stages, cervical cancer can spread from the surface of the cervix, deep into the tissue of the cervix as well as the surrounding tissues within the vagina and uterus (Slaz, 2010). It is estimated that there is an incidence rate, or rate of new cases, of approximately twelve thousand women per year, with roughly four thousand of those women dying in the year 2010 alone (Fisher, 2009; Lindau, 2001). Research shows that while although all women are at risk for developing cervical cancer, the majority of women that actually die from the disease are low-income women and/or women of minority groups, such as African Americans and Hispanics. Due to various social, political, and cultural factors, as well as disparities in the healthcare system, such as access to resources and socioeconomic status, thousands of lowincome and primarily minority women die unnecessarily from cervical cancer. Several risk factors are involved when looking at various causes for...

Women and Diabetes

...Women and Diabetes: An Examination of Quality of Care for Medicare Recipients Abstract In recent years, diabetes has become one of the top 10 causes of death among women. Research has revealed that women 65 years and older account for 40% of the population and numbers are expected to increase exponentially. Vigorous medication management and coordination of care is instrumental in treating diabetes effectively. The patchwork of health insurance that exist today, particularly Medicare Part D, is culpable in allowing unequivocal disparities among race, gender, and socioeconomic status. This paper will examine quality of care among Medicare beneficiaries, particularly women, and implications for revision in social policy. Maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle is a necessity for achieving longevity. A nutritional, well balanced diet coupled with regular exercise is a simple, yet effective way to sustain healthy living. Neglecting to address diet and exercise, as part of a weekly regimen, is a precursor to the onset of an acute, lifelong illness. Diabetes is one of the largest and fastest growing causes of chronic disease mortality, morbidity, and disability in the United States (Robbins & Webb, 2006). Currently, there is no vaccine to prevent diabetes and no cure for the disease once acquired. According to the American Diabetes Association, more than twenty-three million Americans have diabetes. Woman Leadership

...Women Leadership in Healthcare For decades women have served in the healthcare industry as the back bone of healthcare. They continue to work in all areas but have been given few opportunities to take leadership roles in healthcare organizations. This paper explores some of the reasons why women are circumvented in leadership roles and how women can be better prepared to lead in their organizations. The research concluded that women are effective leaders in comparison to their male counter parts. Leadership is an important concept in healthcare. It can simply be acknowledged as the ability to achieve a goal by using imagination, skill, relevant theory, and concepts that are supposed to lead an organization to success. The research conducted for this paper clearly demonstrates that women are an integral part of the ever changing healthcare domain as it relates to leadership. The need for gender diversity in leadership positions is critical for many organizations, especially in healthcare (Virick & Greer, 2012). Despite the fact that leadership is a complex social role, that arises from the actions to effect others in their roles, women can carry out such duties in the same manner, or even better than their male counterparts. (Fealy, McNamara, Casey, Geraghty, Butler, Halligan & Johnson, 2011). Historically, women have been underrepresented in leadership roles in all aspect of healthcare. As the trend of delivering care continues to change in the 21st century...
