Katherine Johnson Salary

To survive in life a person needs to get a job. A job should be enjoyed, since spending countless hours doing something you do not enjoy doesn’t get you anywhere in life, except passed paying taxes. Children of all ages, places, and generations dream of what they are going to be when they grow up, dreams like firefighters, doctors, artists, and chefs. All children dream, but most dreams come short of coming true. In society today, many people's occupations are chosen not because they are following their dream, but because they need the money earned to survive, or they are not treated fairly in the job the desire. What makes finding a job that supports a family even harder is the gender pay gap, if you are a woman. This is because some bosses …show more content…
Each day, she faced different racial inequalities including hidden information needed to complete her job, being forced to use a different coffee kettle than her white colleagues, and the use of a different bathroom. In spite of all the odds against her, Katherine, nicknamed “the human computer” was the one who figured out how to send a man into space. She proved “she could” despite her colleagues impression that black people weren’t worthy of important jobs, and that women were inadequate in the work force. It would seem ideal that after accomplishing her great feat, she would be thanked by the president, acclaimed a United States hero, and getting the recognition for what she had done. But instead, Katherine Johnson was forgotten. Until Hidden Figures (2016), nobody really knew her name, or what she accomplished. This is because Katherine Johnson was a black woman facing inequality in the 1900s …show more content…
A parent's most important job is to teach their children how to act, so that when they grow up into the real world they will build it up instead of tear it down. Frederick Douglass once said: "It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men." That is why a parent models character, so that they can be proud of what their child has become. Young children look up to adults, still trying to figure out what is right from wrong, and which one to choose. In schools across the nation, kids of all ages learn different levels of math, literature, language arts, science, and various other subjects. But education must not simply teach work, it must teach life (W. E. B. Du Bois).” What schools should be teaching is a subject on equality, and unalienable rights. It is hard to express how important spreading the word is. Past mistakes were made on the basis of differences on the outside, and the idea that if a person is different, they are wrong. In the future, if, along with teaching right from wrong, parents tell their children that white and black people should be treated the same, and that men and women are even, we will find ourselves in a society without discrimination, sexism, and other forms of injustice, but instead in a society of

...Question 1: Consider the arguments of John McPhee and Tony Hughes regarding how the risk of these two projects should be measured and incorporated into the investment evaluation process. Are both of them technically correct in the methods they suggest to account for project risk, and which method of risk-adjustment do you think should be applied in evaluating the feasibility of these two projects? As defined by Mira and Dunja, 2005, risk can be determined as knowing future event probability, and uncertainty as unknown probability of future events. Measured uncertainty is a risk. Term risk and uncertainty are often used as synonyms in economy because there is no possibility in economy of some event repetition in exactly the same circumstances. That means that it is hard to measure risk, and event’s probability is a highly subjective estimation. The term risk prevails in portfolio analysis whether in the sense of risk measure (e.g. beta is the risk measure) or in the sense of uncertainty. A project can be defined as an entity of inter-dependent activities, which is unique and has its purpose and objective. In this case study, we have two mutually exclusive investment projects. The first prospective investment involved a strip (open-cut) mining operation in western New South Wales. The second investment also involved the extraction of coal, but this expenditure would be an underground site in South-Eastern Victoria. Based on Mira and Dunja, 2005, project risk can be...

That is the equivalent of a $10 increase per barrel of oil.1 It is, in a word, staggering. And we may not have seen the end of it. Long before Enron’s collapse, a number of business ethicists and business professionals watched with concern as Wall Street analysts demanded increasingly strong corporate financial performance to support rising corporate stock prices. At the same time, the gargantuan compensation packages (including stock options) of the top executives running these companies became inextricably linked to their companies’ stock prices. In 1990, average CEO pay at major corporations was 107 times the pay of the average worker. By 2004, CEO pay had risen to 431 times the pay of the average employee. (If the pay of average workers in the United States had risen as fast as CEO pay, the lowest paid workers would be earning $23.03 an hour, not $5.15 an hour.)2 It was an “accident” waiting to happen, although everyone was making so much money in the market that no one wanted to admit that something could be fundamentally...

...Managing Human Resources What Do I Need to Know? Introduction After reading this chapter, you should be able to: Imagine trying to run a business where you have to replace every employee two or three times a year. If that sounds chaotic, you can sympathize with the challenge facing Rob Cecere when he took the job of regional manager for a group of eight Domino’s Pizza stores in New Jersey. In Cecere’s region, store managers were quitting after a few months on the job. The lack of consistent leadership at the store level contributed to employee turnover rates of up to 300 percent a year (one position being filled three times in a year). In other words, new managers constantly had to find, hire, and train new workers—and rely on inexperienced people to keep customers happy. Not surprisingly, the stores in Cecere’s new territory were failing to meet sales goals. Cecere made it his top goal to build a stable team of store managers who in turn could retain employees at their stores. He held a meeting with the managers and talked about improving sales, explaining, “It’s got to start with people”: hiring good people and keeping them on board. He continues to coach his managers, helping them build sales and motivate their workers through training and patience. In doing so, he has the backing of Domino’s headquarters. When the company’s current chief executive, David Brandon, took charge, he was shocked by the high employee turnover (then 158 percent...

Woman in Pacific

...WOMEN AND LEADERSHIP: THE STATE OF PLAY Deborah L. Rhode and Barbara Kellerman July, 2006 c Some four decades ago, Betty Friedan helped launch the contemporary women’s movement with her publication of The Feminine Mystique. The book famously identified a “problem that has no name”: American women’s confinement to a separate and unequal domestic sphere. One factor contributing to women’s unequal status was their absence from leadership positions. Another aspect of the problem was the lack of cultural consensus that this absence was itself part of the problem, and a matter of social concern. Over the last several decades, we have named that leadership problem and created a cottage industry to address it. Women’s underrepresentation in positions of power generates an increasing array of committees, commissions, consultants, centers, conferences, and commentary such as the essays that follow. Yet while we have made considerable progress in understanding the problem, we remain a dispiriting distance from solving it. I. The Underrepresentation of Women in Leadership Roles The facts are frustratingly familiar. Despite almost a half-century of equal opportunity legislation, women’s opportunities for leadership are anything but equal. To be sure, the situation has improved significantly over this period, particularly if leadership is broadly defined to include informal as well as formal exercises of authority.[i] By that definition, the percentage of women...

FMCGs are generally cheap products that have a short shelf life, and are purchased by consumers on a regular basis. Profit margins on these products are usually low for retailers, who try to offset this by selling large volumes. Some of the most well-known FMCG companies in the world include Unilever, The Coca-Cola Company, and Johnson & Johnson. The FMCG sector comprises a large variety of products, with some of the most important categories being food, beverages, personal care products, and home care products. Within categories, FMCG products are often near-identical, and for this reason price competition between retailers can be intense. To boost profitability, companies use marketing and other techniques to establish loyalty to the product, which enables them to charge higher prices....
