Games using spherical shaped balls have been recorded as early as 1,400 B.c. in MesoAmerica and have evolved into what are now the World’s most prominent sports such as soccer or fùtbol. Games have evolved into sport, which has taken modern society by storm and created one of the largest economical entertainment industries in the world today. The first recorded history of games played with round objects was known as Ōllamaliztli, or simply as, “The Ball Game.” This game had ritualistic associations and has been dated back to 1,400 B.C. Many cultures grew to involve this game into it’s culture and ritualistic lives but the great civilization of the Mayans was the prominent exerciser. “As best as is now known from archaeological and iconographical sources as well as the structure of the sport courts, this was a very physically taxing and important part of Mayan culture.” (Blümchen). ...The Latest Controversy The National Football League, or NFL, has recently started enforcing strict rules regarding helmet to helmet hits; they are now fining and suspending players who commit vicious tackles or helmet to helmet hits. Many fans, players, and coaches complain against the helmet to helmet rule and grown upset about these newly enforced rules, while many still have favor for the new rule. This latest dilemma stirred up various amounts of controversies around the news and public. Several meetings and discussions took place on how the officials should officiate and make the decisions of how crucial and legal the degree of the hit made on the field. These new rules and fines should remain in the NFL to help ensure the players’ safety and cause fewer injuries to NFL players giving them concussions and other injuries that could possibly affect their future. The rebels of these new rules obviously express a variety of arguments of why they disagree with them. The stadium is filled to capacity, everyone anticipating the start of the game but none more than members of the Seneca Valley student section. Each student is pulsing with eagerness as they await kickoff. The bleachers are vibrating, shaking as the students jump up and down. The Seneca Valley kicker, dressed in rich Columbia blue and black, runs at the brown freckled football sitting on the neon orange tee. He catapults the ball to the fifteen yard line where North Allegheny’s returner waits for the ball to come down. He begins to run the ball back. “Get Him!” the student section screams with all their power willing the players on the field to crush the NA player. Do you want to know more about the section? In a short rebuttal to the article I will analyze the reliability, credibility, and validity of the data used by the author as well as identifying any fallacies in the argument. In the article the author takes a position against a playoff system for college football and ends it by stating, “I realize no one else feels this way. I do not care” (Klosterman, 2007).
