Kent State Shooting Research Paper

On April 30, 1970, President Richard M. Nixon addressed the nation, announcing that the United States would expand the boundaries of the Vietnam War into Cambodia. Students across the country wondered how long this action would extend the war and, even more important, the draft. Riots erupted on college campuses, the riots at Kent State University became especially violent and spilled into the streets of the town of Kent, Ohio. After 3 days of turmoil—students broke windows, fought with police, and burned down the campus ROTC building—a peaceful protest turned into a tragedy when the National Guard fired into a crowd of students, only some of whom were demonstrating against the war. After thirteen seconds of shooting, four students lay dead …show more content…
There are many reasons that the shooting shouldn’t have happened in the first place. The first is that the crowd that had gathered Monday morning wasn’t very threatening. In the View From Kent State article, Ellen Glass, a student who was going to Kent State at the time, said, “There was nobody on campus in the morning. It was a relatively quiet campus. And then what they did was let the kids get into a huge group. And the kids were really unenthusiastic anyway, because they couldn’t even keep a chant for more than a couple seconds” (Glass qt. The View From Kent State). This observation of the crowd shows that there was almost no intervention necessary, the crowd was tired and most likely would have dispersed quickly if the guards hadn’t inserted themselves into the situation. Another student who was there, Yvonne Mitchell, said, “It was noon-time. And lunchtime. And a change of classes. There were people who were just curious. And there were some kids who were really just trying to go to class. And the last thing in anyone’s mind was that anyone would be getting shot” (Mitchell qt. The View From Kent State). As Mitchell said, some of the people who were in the area weren’t part of the protest. In his article, William Furlong talks about

Mean World Syndrome

...Mean World Syndrome Soc 101l Background Our society tends to place high value on its members being well versed in the happenings of the world. We’re expected to know what’s going on down the street as well as the latest country to revolt in the Middle East. We’re constantly bombarded with news. A simple click of the mouse at work, turning on the radio in the car, or flipping on the T.V. at home and all the issues of the world are dumped into your lap. Unfortunately in the media the negatives sell more than the positives when trying to attain viewers. The problem this creates is viewers base their whole day, career, and sometimes lives around what the media says. In this paper I intend to study and gather information in regards to the amount of news media people view and the development of mean world syndrome. To determine if the two are directly related. Mean World Syndrome is a phenomenon where the violence-related content of mass media convinces viewers that the world is more dangerous than it actually is, and prompts a desire for more protection than is warranted by any actual threat. (Gerber 2010) An article that presented an interesting take on this issue was Mediators of the association between television viewing and fear of crime: Perceived personal risk and perceived ability to cope by Kathleen Custers and Jan Van den Bulck. This article focuses on the explanatory process of television viewing and the fear of crime. They believe personal risk perception and ability...

In 1972, a new form of entertainment became commercially available with the release of the video game Pong. In Pong, two players tried to "hit" an electronic "ball" back and forth. From these humble beginnings, a revolution in the entertainment industry was born. Interactive game revenues are now significantly greater than the domestic film industry ("Industrial Strengths," 2000). Worldwide video games sales are now at $20 billion annually (Cohen, 2000). The PlayStation video game console, which began as a side project at Sony, now represents $6 billion of the company's $20 billion in annual sales (Cohen, 2000). It is reasonable to question whether video games may have similar effects...

Photoshop Ethics in Journalism

...effect on the credibility of various forms of print media. In this new age of media, where circulation is down and corporations are cutting employees, credibility is a much talked about commodity. Although photo manipulation has a great effect on the credibility of media, it should be considered an art form and given a certain amount of freedom. To accurately understand the argument, the history of pre-Photoshop manipulation opens the paper, followed by modern manipulation and the backlash it has caused, what credibility is, how newspapers are addressing photo manipulation, and how modern manipulation should be handled and the standards that it is held to. Photoshop is a tool that has made the practice of photo manipulation both easy and affordable. But what is photo manipulation? It is simply altering an original image, taking the negative or digital image and changing it in some way. This practice has always been common, as photographers have enhanced lighting or used filters to eliminate a certain color. However, in the context of this paper most of the examples addressed deal with the current, narrower view of photo manipulation. According to the 2006 edition of Merriam Webster, photo manipulation is defined as “the application of image editing techniques to photographs in order to create an illusion or deception (in contrast to mere enhancement or correction), through analog or digital means.” Historically this definition was much more broad, however, the current media environment...

Genocide in Mexico

...2010 Genocide in Mexico This paper explores incidents of genocide that occurred in Mexico from 1945 to 2001. Research focuses on four main episodes of genocide: the October 2, 1968 massacre in Tlatelolco; the Corpus Christi massacre on June 10, 1971; and Mexico’s Dirty War that occurred from the early 1970’s through the 1980’s; and the genocide of women that has been occurring since the Dirty War. Research indicates that the first three episodes of genocide were the responsibility of corrupt government leaders and the army and police that carried out the genocide under government orders (Krauze 725-752). Luis Echeverria, a leading figure in the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) during the 1960’s and Mexico’s president from 1970 to 1976, was charged with genocide related to these events in 2004. However, the charges were dropped due to a judge ruling that the events took place too long ago (BBC 1). The fourth episode of genocide against women is due to the drug cartels and the corrupt government officials that are involved in crime in Mexico (Ramirez 1-2). From 1945 to 1964, Mexico was booming and prosperous because the Second World War had just ended and modernization and industrialization were priorities for the three Mexican presidents during those years. The presidents in office from 1946 until 1964 were Miguel Aleman, Adolfo Ruiz Cortines and Adolfo Lopez Mateos. During this time, Mexico had good relations with the United States. Many new millionaires emerged...

An Exploration of the Governance of the Village of Leigh During the Period 1870 to 1914

...Local History Research Paper – LHM 414 An Exploration of the governance of the village of Leigh during the period 1870 to 1914 Harriet Hall The theme of this piece of research has been to explore to what extent the village of Leigh in Surrey, was changed by families and individuals who were ‘newly arrived’ in the sense of public achievement and recognition as well as having physically moved to the village during the latter part of the nineteenth century. Particular context is provided by Howkins[i] in his writing on the ‘reshaping of rural England during this period and by Brandon’s writing on the Weald, and Surrey.[ii] Primary sources considered in examining the governance of the village, include minutes of the school management committee, of the Vestry meetings, those being the precursors to Parish Councils, as well as records of Land Tax and Poor Rate assessments together with an erratic collection of information provided by those currently living in the village. Reference books on the gentry and The Times online Archive have provided information about the careers of the individuals involved. A brief exploration of the earlier history of Leigh is needed in order to assess the possible later changes, but this is not based on primary sources. Given the limitations of space and the gaps in the sources, this paper can only be an initial assessment providing a partial ‘snapshot’ of this period in the history of a small and apparently unassuming Wealden village. Leigh...

Cell phones have become indispensable tools for far more than just making phone calls. They act as a mobile office, an Internet browsing device, a personal digital assistance, a calculator and more. The explosion of cell phone ownership in the last decade has presented a challenge for institutions of learning all over the United States. The concern has been raised that cell phones are disruptive to the students overall education. A district policy has not yet been standardized in all schools; while some allow them and implement an out of sight out of mind rule, others simply ban them from the campus. There was a time when parents would only buy a cell phone for their child to use during emergencies...

...Consistent with the view that independence is valuable, we find that stock prices react less negatively when the independent director is older, appointed to the board during the tenure of the current CEO, or when he has long board tenure. The current study revealed that cooperative suppressor effects and conflicting subsets of personality traits within the construct of psychopathy might help explain this conundrum.
